While many of us as Packer fans view our team with G&G glasses, still others are convinced aspects of our team "suck" or we just don't appreciate just how good areas/players on this team are. Thought it may be interesting to keep a running thread of other players/coaches/scouts/writers assessments of the Pack as the season goes on. Sometimes it's these assessments that keeps things in perspective.
These are from JSO and the Washington Post from yesterday's game:
As Aaron Rodgers, three sensational wide receivers and a rampaging tight end laid bare Haslett's best-laid plans, Larry Coyer could relate.
Now the Redskins' advance scout, Coyer was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts against the New Orleans Saints in the 44th Super Bowl.
In a coaching career that began in 1965, Coyer said the only time he ever felt helpless against a great quarterback was in the last quarter and a half that night in Miami.
Drew Brees passed for 288 yards in the Saints' 31-17 victory, and his passer rating was 114.5.
On a rainy Sunday, Rodgers tied Matt Flynn's team record by throwing for 480 and his rating was 146.0 as the Green Bay Packers destroyed the Redskins, 38-20.
"He's getting better with age," Coyer said after the carnage was complete. "Knows what he's doing. Presnap look. Quick release.
"Two-deep (safeties), he's going down the middle. Three deep, he's hitting the X (split end) skinnies (post routes). Press man, same thing. And then he'll raise up and throw a screen at you."
After studying Green Bay in its opening defeat at San Francisco, Coyer told the coaches that the Packers and 49ers were the best teams in football.
Nothing that happened at Lambeau Field changed Coyer's mind.
"We had a little rhythm going, but then (Rodgers) caught on that that was all single safety," he said. "Once he caught that it was over.
"Oh, (expletive), Green Bay's got a lot of tools. Tight end's really good. If the running back (Eddie Lacy) isn't hurt he's going to be really good. Offensive line's getting nasty, too."
As the game wore on, Haslett played both safeties deep, and that's when Starks began to run wild.
"They have a physical offensive line," nose tackle Barry Cofield said. "I think they would rather run block than pass block if you would ask them. They have talented backs, and they blocked their butts off today."
At the snap, four Redskins peeled off into zone coverage as three rushed. On the outside right, Rodgers knew he had Nelson on a skinny post against cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who was playing too far off awaiting help underneath.
That help couldn't get there if Rodgers threw it right now, which he did on a line to Nelson for the score.
"You are going to be challenged every possession because he can put the ball in the right spots," said safety Reed Doughty, a 46-game starter in an eight-year career. "He (Rodgers) makes every right call and every right check."
On defense, the Packers held the Redskins to 14 yards in seven carries en route to a 24-0 lead. Alfred Morris had a field day in an excellent zone scheme after that, but Coyer put himself in Dom Capers' shoes when he said, "It's, like, 'Who cares?'"
Coyer sees Green Bay's defense ably supporting the offense.
"They play to the character of Dom," he said. "Aggressive. Try to put body on body. Run is not first and foremost. Pass is, and it's a passing league. I agree with him."
“He’s one of the best if not the best in the league,” Kerrigan said of Rodgers. “He showed it today. What really makes him good is the sync, the synergy he has with his receivers. And that was on display today, unfortunately.”

Packers 38, Redskins 20
F | Another ugly start for a struggling Redskins team. At 0-2 they've been out of both games by halftime. Blame part of it on Robert Griffin III not being ready. He can't run and he's not healthy enough to be pinpoint with his accuracy either. The bigger problem is a young secondary and defense that's been absolutely smoked in two straight weeks. Whoever is running @Redskins would get an A+ from me, though. Talk about grinding out optimism through a tough game.
A | An old-fashioned evisceration by Aaron Rodgers on a young Redskins secondary Sunday. Rodgers threw for a career high in passing yards, James Starks ran for more than 100 yards and the Redskins didn't do anything offensively until this game was completely out of hand. Massive beating. |
