Summation/Long-story-made-short: Overall, the change in my thinking is an even stronger desire for new safeties, and more d-back depth. I also feel better about the team's core players, from a talent perspective.

If you want play along, here was the train of thought -

(Because I have some time and I didn't want to clog the draft thread or the "how many players" thread) Here's a mock I did on First Pick where the algorithm was throwing out a lot of rather favorable trade offers. This exercise requires a few big assumptions, but it's something I found interesting to think about.

Assumption 1: Every player "drafted" will make the final 53. With this many "picks" no rookie free agents want to sign.

Assumption 2: Three spots are taken by the current specialists, so no hassle with kicker, punter and long snapper.

Assumption 3: You can sign one "big name" free agent and one "mid-tier" free agent.

Assumption 4: You can re-sign any of the team's current free agents. You can cut any player currently under contract, but not restructure them.

There are 29 players in this mock. That means you get to keep/build a veteran core of 21 players (it was going to be 22, ostensibly a starting offense and defense, but added the extra free agent)

Once you have the 21-player core (assuming the "big name" free agent will also be part of it) how do you feel about "your' roster even if you could purge the chum. Would it be "dang, this team has a great core to build around!" or "I replaced over half the roster and there are still guys that suck around"?

Positions are slightly skewed due to numbers, ie: only one whatever was drafted, but it's establishing a common baseline. Offensive players in bold, defensive in italics.

Here's mine:

Offense -

(1/2/2) QB: Rodgers (plus Jackson)

(2/4/6) RB: Williams, Jones (plus Anderson and Pollard)

(3/6/12) WR: Adams, MVS, ESB (plus Metcalf, Samuel and Dortch)

(3/5/15) TE/FB:  Jared Cook (mid-tier FA) (plus Hockenson and Conrad)

(3/8/23) OL: Bakhtiari, Linsley, Bulaga (plus Dillard, McGary, Deiter, Samia, Powers)

_________

(3/6/6) DL: Clark, Daniels, Lowry (plus Kingsley, Sagapalu and Daniels)

(4/9/15) LB: Fackrell, Martinez, Burks, re-sign Matthews (plus Polite, Jelks, Brailford, V. Joseph, K. Joseph and Sapp)

(3/5/21) CB: Alexander, King, Jackson,  (plus Robinson, Johnson)

(1/5/26) S: Earl Thomas (big-name FA) (plus Adderly, Gardner-Johnson, Johnson and Gant)

Generally speaking, the core looks pretty solid to build from, though depth didn't feel strong, so that "confirmed" my previous thinking.

Icleaned house at TE and Safety and felt better about it. I could have held my nose with the current TE crew, but the safety spot was just a disaster. It made me feel Safety is maybe an even bigger "need" than Edge.  Safety, OG (and even TE) were spots to want all-new starters

My "tough cuts" were Lane Taylor (though as an experienced backup, I'd hope Deiter and McGary/Samia would be my starting OG tandem with McGary or Dillard taking over for Bulaga in 2020), Kizer (simply as a veteran backup, not because I like him), Montravious Adams (I kept Lowry instead), Breeland (experience) and Cobb.

I can't spend the amount of time this thread deserves right now. But I'll add a couple players.

Packers trade #30 overall to Steelers for their 3rd rounder #83 overall & Antonio Brown (yes that's the max a 32 year old WR is worth)

Packers sign Earl Thomas in FA.

Let the draft fall as it may.

I'd do that trade for AB...

I have a hard time seeing Earl Thomas anywhere but Dallas.  Thomas has made no bones about wanting to play down there and Dallas would be foolish not to pursue him.
