EmailPrint|(14) Comments Green Bay - Here is a summary of coach Mike McCarthy's post-practice comments Thursday preceded by the injury report:

INJURY REPORT

•CB Tramon Williams (illness) - DNP
•WR Jordy Nelson (knee) - Full
•S Charles Woodson (collarbone)
•WR Randall Cobb (ankle) - full
•RB James Starks (knee) - limited
•DE Jerel Worthy (knee) - out
•WR Jarrett Boykin (ankle) - DNP

MIKE MCCARTHY

•Don't have a feel for Tramon Williams. Came in sick, was given medication and sent home.

•Cobb and Nelson both pushed it hard in practice and looked good.

•Concern of Nelson's injury is what it could turn into. Depend on examination.

•Don't know if Ponder is X factor. I just think so much more involved. QB position is critical no matter what. I think X factor is line play on both sides

•Feel good about where we are as football team. Tough coming off a turf game. Pushed it hard outsdies on Wednesday. Had about 30 minutes outside today.

•Friday will be like a normal Saturday during a Sunday game week.

•Playoff games are different. Helps that Rodgers has played seven. Has played in cold, on road. Definitely helps you. Obviously, first time for Ponder, but football is still football
.
•EDS done a good job with management and speed of getting line set. That's been a seamless transiiton. Saturday has been a great big brother to him. Physically, EDS is playing well.

Great to have team healthy. Healthy at the right time. Tough to do the 46.

•No limitations on Charles.

•He's been pushing conditioning last five or six weeks. Has been practicing. It's just a transition into game mode. We'll keep an eye on him.

•Vikings live in cold. That's an advantage for them. They'll get off the plane and it will be the same. It's different for teams from southern climates.

•There are games when he would not defer if winning the coin toss. Talk about it today in game management meeting. That decision is made then. Depends on opponent

Jordy will be fine. The Packers could have their full compliment of WR's for 1st time since week 1.

Williams?
The Greg Jennings/AP meeting at midfield after the game would be considered a sexual relationship in Amish circles (so I've heard from Lebanon Levi).
I think GJ owes the dinner and the cigarette.

I don't know if Peterson likes him very much. The other day, every time Peterson was running down the field, you could see Williams chasing him and waving his arms, asking him for his autograph. And Peterson never once even slowed down.

I thought that seemed awfully rude.
Listened to Arod (I think with Wilde) today. He was asked about deferring, and his take was solidly in favor of defer - with the motivation to "Double Up" with TD to end the 2Q and start 3Q.

Though, as others have said, handing the rock to AP right off the bat is tough. Gotta figure this week, the home crowd, and motivated Def will be ready.

Just made it sound that "Defer" is always choice 1A in Arod's eyes due to the "Double Up" potential.
In addition to the "double up", if the Packers play good STs and then good D, their first possession would be with pretty good field position.

Touchback, followed by a 3 and out, followed by a 40 yard punt, followed by a 10 yard return would give the Packers their first possession around the 50.
I like starting on defense. I like deferring & the potential double-up.

WTF are you all afraid of? Tackling Petersen to open the game? Gimme a break man. He might be juicing but he's still a man. He had about 4-5 long runs where the defense had him bottled up behind the LOS. He reverses direction & gets out the back side. Their O-Line isn't the Cowboys of the early 90's. FINISH HIM for god sakes! This is about a team playing team defense & the offense carrying the day with long sustained drives to keep him off the field.

Vikings in & DONE.
I agree defer is the right call. Double up potential, plus the fact that this will be Ponder's first playoff game, probably "jittery", good ST play, even if they come down and score, the double up possibility is still in play.
I also prefer deferring, especially in this game. The crowd is going to be fired up. Ponder is playing in his first playoff game, on the road, so I expect his nerves will get to him. If we take the ball first, we are immediately asking the crowd to calm down, and we give Ponder a chance to calm down.

Kick the ball to them, force an early punt or turnover, and let's get the offense going. Later, we get the ball at half, which is always nice.
One other point in deferring, is that with all the different looks the Offense sees in the first half, the Offense should be able to make adjustments coming out at half time, therefore providing a better chance at success (TD) in the opening drive of the second half. How about that for a run-on sentence.

It would be interesting to see our scoring % on 2nd half opening drives with teams that defer.

Thanks. For some reason this is still bothering me, despite the quotes. Strained ligament? Partially torn ligament? Perhaps nothing.

I grew up in Vermillion SD, btw.
Defer. Double-down on the Queens' first possession and double-up on GB scores.

The talk with Jennings and AP was, I'm sure, Jennings telling him how great he is. Remember that before the game Jennings said that he'd like to see Peterson break the record even if it was against the Packers. At the time I thought it was a stupid thing to say because he wanted to see AP break the record against his own team. I didn't like it when he said it, and I still don't. If nothing else, Jennings' comment says "I'm out the door." He should have just kept his mouth shut. I lost a bit of respect with that comment. It reminded me too much of Bert and Strahan. At least Jennings didn't run out and lay down in front of a defensive teammate. Big Grin
I don't have much preference but deferring last weekend just put them behind.
I would think a team with AR, at home, could take the opening KO and score.
Get in the car and drive! Why wait around to see what they do? Get in, drive it like you own it and floor the mutha! Put the pressure on them.

deferring now almost seems like a lack of confidence... I said, ALMOST.
Deferring the kickoff allows mn to take the ball and dictate the pace. If they get the first possession, run the ball with ap to a 7-0 score it changes things.

Compare that to Rodgers and the offense going up 7-0 and putting the pressure on Pinder. With a hostile crowd, his first look at a Woodson-led secondary this season; that could really put him in a mind frame that affects him all game.

Take the ball.

Do you have that little faith in the defense? This isn't 2011 defense.

This game will be different than last weeks game. Watch & see.

Don't be afraid. Don't play like a bunch of pansies.

Gimme a break. Christian Ponder is all of a sudden Peyton Manning??!?!

Amen to that!
Score first and score often!
Let THEM play catch-up and next intercept a few of Ponders bad tosses in the cold.

Would rather have Woodson, House and the rest of the recovering crew defending passes than throwing their bodies at peterson.
