Tension boiling over between coach Urban Meyer, Jaguars players, staff amid 2-10 start (nfl.com)

In the past two weeks alone, sources say:

  • Receiver Marvin Jones -- one of the locker room's most respected and mild-mannered veterans -- became so angry with Meyer's public and private criticism of the receiver group that he left the facility until other staff members convinced him to come back and had a heated argument with Meyer during practice.
  • During a staff meeting, Meyer delivered a biting message that he's a winner and his assistant coaches are losers, according to several people informed of the contents of the meeting, challenging each coach individually to explain when they've ever won and forcing them to defend their résumés.
  • Contrary to his public statements that it was injury-related, Meyer ordered Robinson's benching after an opening-drive fumble in last week's 37-7 road loss to the Rams, then had running backs coach Bernie Parmalee stop Robinson from re-entering the game, insisting Carlos Hyde (who played for Meyer at Ohio State) stay in. Only after Lawrence questioned Meyer on the sideline about Robinson's absence was Robinson allowed to return late in the second quarter. (Speaking to reporters this week, Lawrence said: "Bottom line is James is one of our best players and he's got to be on the field and we addressed it, and I feel like we're in a good spot and the whole team, we're good.")

Several Jaguars players vented their frustration to Rams players after that game, sources say, reiterating a common complaint that Meyer -- who had no prior NFL experience -- doesn't treat them like adults.

You cant treat grown ass men who make millions more then he ever will like 19 year old teenagers. Meyer apparently continues to be unable to grasp this. And he's probably going to ruin Lawrence. Jag's need to get rid of Meyer before there is a mutany.

Whe was the last time a college head coach became a successful NFL head coach right out of a head coaching job in college?  I can’t think of any.  The last one I remember trying before this was Chip Kelley and he also failed miserably.  Granted, these guys are usually brought in to help desperate teams, but still.

Jimmy Johnson comes to mind

What the hell is a "Chief of Staff " in the NFL?   Meyer acts like a dictator, is he actually?   And who else but good ol Urb is responsible for the assistants he hired?

Supposedly MLF wasn't allowed to hire the special teams coach he wanted.

Pete Carroll has done pretty well with Seattle

Urb being Urb.  I’d love to see Marvin Jones run a sideline route and inadvertently flatten him.

Except that Seattle is Carroll's third go-round, having failed with the Jets (to be fair, everybody does) and Patriots.

Meyer being Meyer.  What he did in college meant exactly nothing once he made the jump to the NFL.   I think that tool is finding out that you can't just out recruit other teams in the NFL like he could in college.

I can’t stand Pete Carroll, but the guy has done pretty well in the pros.   As Larry David would say, pretty, pretty, well.

I’ll bet Jim Harbaugh has a better winning percentage with the 9ers than he has so far with Michigan.   Maybe he’s finally turning it around.

Carroll won a Super Bowl.  That's pretty fucking good.

To me, college football coaches come into two flavors.  The peter pan cult of personality douchebags like Meyers and those who are actually interested in the chess game that is football.  It goes without saying there are many more of the later.

Some people like working with/as professionals.  Most others want to be the "Ol' Ball Coach" and chase college tramps with their players.

Urban may be a douche, but that's not why his sucks.  They have a severe lack of talent.  Gonna take a couple drafts and FA to get that program turned around.  Belichick couldn't do much with that team this season.

When your rookie QB comes over to you and asks why the fuck the leading rusher on your team is still on the bench, you suck.

When you have zero respect from your team and coaches regardless of how bad they may be, you suck.

I'll take "Trying To Get Fired and Get That Sweet Buyout" for $1200.

A: This coach, after not getting fired when intentionally getting caught with a young woman instead of flying home with his team after a loss, then decided to start fighting with players and calling the coaches he hired losers.

Well there are more than I thought as some of you have pointed out.  Meyer’s not starting out very well.  Not just because of a lack of talent, but also because of poor leadership skills if that tweet is true.  Who’s going to want to follow that guy?  He will not be successful in the NFL if he doesn’t change in a hurry.

Exactly.  Can someone be that clueless/careless?  The fact the Jaguars haven’t canned his as already shows they have more problems than just the coach.

He’s probably wondering why guys like Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley hit it big and he’s stuck in Jacksonville.

Next to Saban, I’d say Urban Meyer is the next best college coach in the last 20 years.  He could probably go to Purdue or Indiana and win a natty.  But he’s clearly out of his element in the pros.

At what point does that stop being coaching and just paying players better?  Seriously, it's like pre-cap NFL on a metric ton of steroids but devoid of ethics too.

Just part of the reason it's hard to give a shit about the NCAA.  These assholes can't really coach, that's why so many fail in the NFL.

You can always run for Senate Urb.  You can be the same POS lying dumbfuck just like at UF and OSU.

Hell, you can even pick which collection of sub-human trash you want to vote for you.  Florida or Ohio.

And that may be why Jacksonville is sticking with him. He's being a petty dick trying to get out and they're keeping him under wraps until all the college jobs he'd want are filled as not to let him double cash in.

What would be funnier is if they made Bevell the de facto coach and the entire staff and team just ignored him like he was a ghost.  Just let him stand there on the sidelines while all the gators/buckeye fans weep.

That's exactly what is happening. He's got/had his eye on one of the CFB openings and he's trying to get out of Jacksonville with a big fat check.

It seems like Jacksonville knows this and they are waiting for all the big jobs to fill up before they dump his worthless ass. Man, no one saw this failure coming.

I tend to think it's less about how well they can/can't coach and has more to do with the fact that many of these come in thinking they can play the whole control freak, disciplinarian, fear of god thing that might work with 18-20 year olds but is laughed out of the room by grown ass men. To me those that figure that out can succeed (Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll), but the guys that never get out of this "Leader of Men" bullshit fail immediately (Meyer) or they get tuned out very quickly (Harbaugh, Saban)

@AlbertBreer: Jaguars coach Urban Meyer on fixing what's wrong: "What's the answer? Starting leaking some information or nonsense? That's garbage. ... If there is a source, then that source is unemployed. I mean, within seconds."

@bykevinclark:  *Trevor Lawrence frantically looks up from phone*
"Uh, me. I'm the source. It's me coach. I spilled the beans."

It’s not supernatural

Perhaps when he was at Utah he had to actually grind and fight and coach but at UF and O$U?  90% of the time the Gators or Buckeyes were better than their opponent.  Not so much in the NFL.  Each week is a grind.

Urban is the true means to an end type guy.  He will take you to the mountain top, but will leave a lot of dead bodies in his wake.  Nothing is out of bounds for that guy.

It’s crazy to think about it but if Wisconsin offered him today in a couple of years the Badgers would be a top 3-4 program because Urb can flash the rings and players and prospects still go for that superficial shit.  Not to get political but it’s a lot like Trump.  Talk a lot of shit, deflect, talk more shit, blame or demonize others, rinse and repeat.

What’s hysterical is Meyer is 3x the guy that Lincoln Riley or Brian Kelly could ever dream to be.  In the college game, his only checkmate is Saban and it’s not like he’s a spring chicken.

If I’m LSU or USC I will have serious buyers remorse if good ole Urb is on the market.
