This PSA serves as a reminder that the Vikings roster as currently constructed is headed to the offseason $3 million OVER the projected 2020 salary cap. (Packers projected $27 million below with virtually no dead money)

The easy fix for Minny is restructuring Cousins contract. But Iโ€™ve been told itโ€™s hard to restructure spent money. Who knew???

Zimmer knows heโ€™s fucked. So does Spielman. This Cousins thing went like everyone thought (except for those two) Vikings are totally screwed.

Hence the Zimmer handshake with MLF. The best part of all of it was MLF walking away from Zimmer like he didnโ€™t want to listen to how everything went so wrong.

If the Vikings cut Xavier Rhodes and donโ€™t pick up the club option on Everson Griffen they free up almost 20MM.  Release Riley Reiff and thatโ€™s nearly another 9MM.

The issue is Britton Colquitt, Dan Bailey, Trey Wayans, and Anthony Harris are all UFA- not to mention starters.  Rashod Hill is an UFA as well and heโ€™s their top OL backup.  Then you have Eric Wilson and CJ Ham as RFA- two more starters.

Kearse, Weatherly, Alexander are all backups that see playing time and as UFA status oh boy.

When you roll everything up the Vikings could easily have 5+ key starting spots to fill and the problem is they almost have to do it exclusively through the draft because they wonโ€™t have money to spend in free agency.

Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer bet their careers on a 3-4 year run with the likes of Case Keenum and now Kirk Cousins and for Zimmer specifically he knows they are completely fucked now that GB is back on track and Chicago is lurking with a QB move of their own.

The Minnesota dominant D will only get worse from here because they canโ€™t pay everyone so barring a Khalil Mack type trade they are finished.  Maybe they should have dealt Diggs for picks.  Too late now.  Maybe with better DB depth they could deal Harrison Smith as he could get them a lot in return but they will need at least one starting corner if not two plus a safety.

Welcome back to the 8-8 days.

I totally get the Vikings signing Cousins. Coaches and GMs only get so much time. Figure 4-5 years and if they aren't winning then they go the way of the Dodo.

MN had a good roster but not a QB. They took a shot on the guy who was probably the best available. They had the 29th or 30th pick in the draft that year and could have taken Lamar Jackson but passed.

They didn't have a 1st the prior year.

They are too late to take a QB this draft and not get fired before he becomes anything. So they are going down with Cousins. He's not going to win them anything. He's like the Ginger Cannon in Cincy. A tease. Just good enough to keep around and bad enough to get you fired.

We get the joy of them celebrating their division on our field. That is the part I'm blocking out now. I've always had to block stuff out between us and them. The hardest part for me though is the reality that we are still not in their class. They are a winning organization again and we are still their b*tch. I don't want to know anything more. I tricked myself into believing we caught them. We have not. They have a QB who even though aging and slowing will still likely be there longer then our misguided rental. They have championships we have hope and expectations. They are a better team for going on 30 years now and that pisses me off. Last night was my last straw for Mike and Kirk. I will never be fooled into believing them again. These two will never make us great.

Yeah, they can't do a damn thing about Kirkland's cap figure in 2020. They are stuck with him for another year and have to decide to either draft a QB this year or give him a new contract or sign another sub-elite tier QB in 2021 and likely overpay for him.

What's funny is their fans think he's going to take a hometown discount and take less than his last deal. Because he's a nice guy and he's already made a lot of money or something. That's not how the QB formula works in the NFL. If you are a clear starting QB in the NFL (and Cousins is) you are going to get a record or near record contract just by being the newest contract. His next deal will easily be $35 million per year unless he has some big injury or just has a terrible 2020. He will play well enough to make the Vikings or some other team pony up the cash and regret it later.

Pay attention to the deal Dak Prescott gets from the Cowboys - unless they just franchise him. That's the starting price for Kirkland.

It is so great, to be here, basking in the glow of vikings' ineptitude!  I love how they skewered themselves, throughout the years, and are showing no signs of stopping that trend!  I hope they extend Spielman's contract.

The Vikings almost have to take a QB early in the draft because itโ€™s pretty obvious Kirk isnโ€™t the answer and they probably wonโ€™t have cap space to sign a FA like they normally have done unless they blow up the roster.

Keep in mind that Dalvin Cook will also want to get paid at some point if they intend on keeping him happy.

In retrospect, they probably should have released Kyle Rudolph given they drafted Irv Smith and should have let Anthony Barr  take the Jets offer and leave.  As I said earlier you canโ€™t pay everyone and neither player is worth what they are paying them and itโ€™s tying up almost 20MM a year for the next 3-4 years.

Rick Spielman just canโ€™t help himself with the checkbook and in the short term (next 2-3 years) they are pretty much screwed from a salary cap standpoint even if Cousins walks.

You want to hear a mind blowing number? In 2020, 12 players eat up about 83% of their salary cap.

Iโ€™m with you Aiden, imagine being as shallow as a Minnesota sports fan and listing โ€œinjuring a professional athleteโ€ as one of their top sports moments of the decade.

This is simply fuel to the fire. Purple is the color of choke โ€“ I hope the Minnesota Vikings organization continues to underachieve and waste years of spending on โ€œtalentโ€ that fails their organizations year in and year out โ€“ enjoy your first-round exit next week.
