This PSA serves as a reminder that the Vikings roster as currently constructed is headed to the offseason $3 million OVER the projected 2020 salary cap. (Packers projected $27 million below with virtually no dead money)

The easy fix for Minny is restructuring Cousins contract. But I’ve been told it’s hard to restructure spent money. Who knew???

Zimmer knows he’s fucked. So does Spielman. This Cousins thing went like everyone thought (except for those two) Vikings are totally screwed.

Hence the Zimmer handshake with MLF. The best part of all of it was MLF walking away from Zimmer like he didn’t want to listen to how everything went so wrong.

Yeah, they can't do a damn thing about Kirkland's cap figure in 2020. They are stuck with him for another year and have to decide to either draft a QB this year or give him a new contract or sign another sub-elite tier QB in 2021 and likely overpay for him.

What's funny is their fans think he's going to take a hometown discount and take less than his last deal. Because he's a nice guy and he's already made a lot of money or something. That's not how the QB formula works in the NFL. If you are a clear starting QB in the NFL (and Cousins is) you are going to get a record or near record contract just by being the newest contract. His next deal will easily be $35 million per year unless he has some big injury or just has a terrible 2020. He will play well enough to make the Vikings or some other team pony up the cash and regret it later.

Pay attention to the deal Dak Prescott gets from the Cowboys - unless they just franchise him. That's the starting price for Kirkland.

There isn't a chance in hell Cousins gets 35M/yr. MN can't afford that and no other team is dumb enough to pay him those sorts of dollars.

Dak isn't getting that either. This season should have proved something to Dallas. He isn't the guy. He can win some games but he cannot win enough games. If Dallas fires the coach then the guy you get isn't going to want to be saddled with a QB he doesn't know or Prescott that he does know. That limits the coaches who might take the job.

There will be plenty of teams looking for a QB this off season, I think as many as 14 would like to draft a starting QB and you might have quite a few QBs with starter experience on the market: Newton, Trubiskey, Prescott, Rivers, Brady, Brees, Winston, Flacco.... Most will be old, banged up and not good enough to win a title.

Most teams in the quandary will default to paying the evil that they know rather than the unknown. Prescott will probably stay in Dal, Trubiskey in Chicago, Newton in Car, etc.

Then you are going to have teams draft their guys. Cincy is taking Burrow. He's a S. Ohio kid and I predict will be the next Andy Dalton! Tua will still go early. Herbert the kid in OK and maybe one or two more. None are great prospects IMO but they haven't proven that they are not the guy. That's what you have with these vets who will be available.

You cannot pay a QB who is not a difference maker, difference maker money. The rest of the roster suffers too much and you cannot win. See MN, OAK, DET, CAR, NYG, ATL.

MN is finding that out this off season. They have only 37 players signed through next season and will already be $2m over the cap. They are almost being forced to extend Cousins and redo his contract to gain cap space. (lol) They don't have the draft ammo to move up into the top 10 unless they mortgage the future in some crazy stupid, bears Trubiskey type trade. (and look how that's turning out)

There are maybe 4 QB locks in the first and you have Cincy, Mia, LAC, CAR, and even Det in the top 10 in the draft order. All could take a QB and I'd bet at least three do. Then you have the middling teams that might move up. Den, Chi (if they had any draft picks left), Colts...

You got to take your chances on a young drafted kid rather than some retread. Cousins might force 30M out of MN in an extension but with the cap going up that's a mid tier QB contract. And I wouldn't give him that.

I got the tip from someone on X4 long ago as a way to read JSO and especially the Press-Gazette.
Incognito, Private, whatever, different names for different browsers.

And this is why Vajeens fans are, and always will be trash.

And you cannot be a good receiving team with WR who can't catch.  It's right in the name, receivers.

after watching the bears/packers game yesterday i think if chicago doesn't pack it up-and i don't think they would-they're going to be the tougher test of the two games. their defense played hard yesterday and were taking it to the packers in the 4th quarter. trubisky plays halfway decent without turning it over and it will be a close game.

The Vikings have absolutely zero to play for in week #17, other than professional pride. They are locked in at #6 seed. It's a pre-season game for them against the Bears.

If I was coaching purple I would treat this game like a bye week to get as healthy as possible for WC weekend.

I think Zimmer is in a no-win situation for this game. He rests starters and their last game was a whopping, inept loss at home to their arch-rivals; they played badly and got stomped -- do you want that as your last tuneup before the playoffs? But, if he plays his starters to try to correct some of the mistakes, even for a few series, he stands a chance of injury -- or worse yet, they poop the bed again. How's that go over right before playoffs?

Will this same kind of thinking work with Andy Dalton, Marcus Mariotta, and Ryan Tannehill?

Nope, they are a tier lower. Dalton is at the end of his career. Mariotta is a potential reclamation project and Tannehill is one in progress.  Tannehill will probably make some bank off his bounce back season.

Carson Wentz
Matt Ryan
Kirk Cousins
Jimmy Garappalo
Matt Stafford
Derek Carr

Look them up. All making $25+ million a year. What do they have in common? They haven't won shit. Yeah, OK Matt Ryan got to a Super Bowl and they had a lead for most of the game. The only guys in this group I'd consider for a huge deal is Garappalo and Wentz and that's just because I'm not 100% sure they are not winners.

I agree that Minnesota "shouldn't" give Cousins $35 million a year but they will or some other team will if he plays in 2020 like he did in 2019. That's the way the NFL works. Teams are that desperate to have that missing piece they think they are missing.

Dak is getting paid, too. Either by the Cowboys with a big contract or franchise tag or some other team will. I don't know if it will be $30 million plus but I won't blink an eye if it is. He's young and coming off a near 5000 yard season. I don't think he's worth it but that won't mean shit in the end.

I get it.   That said, we are who we are.  So let’s embrace that and beat the shit out of some people until we got the skill to run around them.

It says a lot about the team and about MLF.   Come playoff time, every WR still playing is going to be going 100 on that 2nd 8 run from the 50.   So this is when we will learn if they are special or our ceiling is division round.

Or you can just clear cookies when you reach the 7 story limit.

So if the 84 million dollar man had started all 16 games,  if he could keep up that remarkable pace he might have thrown,

16 games X 3 interceptions per game  = 48,

maybe an NFL record.      skoal  !!!

I have no problem with using WR that way since we know the majority of them are half ass in the pass game.

Jones is getting more playing time at WR than half the WR corp.  They fucking stink.  If they can block, great, but the point being it would be nice if they could do both going into the playoffs.  Just one or two of them Frank Zombo it and maybe it's enough to get the Superb Owl.  Otherwise, sign a bunch of skinny Olinemen/huge TEs and be done with it.

You want to hear a mind blowing number? In 2020, 12 players eat up about 83% of their salary cap.

It won't matter to Spielman (probably Zim too) because at that point, he'll be terminated. I hope to God they give him an extension. Everything is right in the NFC North world.

But......

THE NORTH IS NOT ENOUGH!!!

Lots of whispers of a shakeup in Minnysota (Zim? Stefanski? Spielman?) if the Queens bow out against the heavily-favored Saints on Sunday.

With no cap space, an aging and expensive defense, and Captain Kurt under contract for at least one more year the implosion of the Queens as we've known them the past few seasons is proceeding just as foreseen after game 2 of the 2019 season.

Just a delicious outcome for a very deserving fan base.
