Have we really gone almost 2 months without any comments in this thread?!?!?

MT5 on Packers.com

That's a link to Murphy's monthly Q&A column. Someone references his time in Washington and how good those teams were with adequate QBs but excellent defenses, massive O-lines and strong running game.  Then Murphy is asked his thoughts on winning a SB in today's game with that formula, specifically not an elite QB.

Murphy gives an okay answer, about what would be expected from someone within the org:

"Over the years, the league has really become a quarterback-driven league. Washington won three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks – Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien. All very good, but not Hall of Fame quarterbacks. In my mind, things were different in the 1980s and 1990s, but it is also a great tribute to Joe Gibbs. I don't think you can win a Super Bowl now without an elite quarterback. The other issue is whether you can win with an elite quarterback getting paid a full-market salary. Tom Brady has been paid less than full market throughout most of his career, and Patrick Mahomes won the Super Bowl while on a rookie contract."

Interesting he adds last two lines to his reply.  I'm sure it will infuriate some, but he's probably right.

I say, let's get stoned

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone
They'll stone you when you are walking home
They'll stone you and then say you are brave
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave

But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned

Murphy is right. Let’s stone him.

Maybe he should quit being a big whiny pussy while trying to pull off his tough guy bullshit and do something about it.

10 million, just sitting there.

This fucking guy is the epitome of "good enough".  Good enough to just win the division because that puts butts in the seats.  Well, great tough guy.  Here I thought it was about winning championships.

The guy is a fucking middling quitter pussy.

10 mil? Rodgers spent it on some whores and blow. Fucking QBs.

I’ve got some concerns about the defense and yes if they are sitting on cap space we all know they should spend it to either improve the roster or extend a contract of an exiting player like Adams or Alexander.

As for MMs comments about QBs not winning a title while being paid top dollar, well, that’s true.  Maybe Mahomes or Rodgers will prove him wrong, but the next time it happens will be the first time.

I'm pretty sure Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning all won Super Bowls while being paid top money as a QB. Might be missing a name or two but these guys for sure. Yes, later in his career Brady took the home team discount but there was a time when he was right near the top of the NFL for salary.

Nope! No QB has ever won a Super Bowl in the salary cap era taking up more than 12% of their cap. Aaron won it while he was taking up about 6% of the Packers cap.

Elway? Steve Young? Aikman? Favre?

Manning in Denver? Eli Manning?

One of them had to be more than 12%

Elway, Favre and Young, their Super Bowls preceded the cap. Peyton and Eli had the 2 highest %age of the Super Bowl winners. 11.7 and 11.66%. Murphy is voicing a valid concern.

The NFL cap went into place for the 1994 season.  Contracts were already in place (except for FAs, obviously).  And during the 1994 season, Steve Young was the highest paid QB at $4.525 million.  The cap was $36.6 million.  He went on to win the SB and was about 13% of the Niners' cap. Like I said, his contract was in place already when the cap was instituted.

Please no to any changes to the cap rules.    What makes the NFL the best of the major sports is the cap.

I'm not talking about getting rid of the cap here. There needs to be a way for teams to pay their franchise QB's and still assemble a reasonable team around them long term.

@PackerHawk posted:

They really do need to do something to address this. A separate cap for your QB's or something where you can exempt 1 or 2 players with a cap on that exemption.

Agreed.

Another possibility would be to give more cap space for teams to retain their own drafted players on subsequent contracts or players that have been on your roster for more than a certain number of years (3 or more)? You could count 80% of the salary you allocate to keep your own player against your cap.

The players won't go for it though. What they really want is the NBA model where the superstars can dictate where they play and move around a lot more. That would kill the NFL which is more dependent on continuity than other sports (the Tom Brady example last year being the exception).
