During discussions with coaches we talked about the requirements to be eligible to play in the NCAA basketball tournament as a freshman. You have to pass 6 credits in the fall and there are no requirements for the spring semester to remain eligible for that year. Most of the guys who know they are lottery picks come in and probably take a physical education class and something like art history in the fall. And then, they don't even bother to show up in the spring.

This will never happen, but I'd like to see them actually say what these guys are majoring in. They claim privacy prevents them for doing that for football or basketball players, but then the football players get information on every part of their body published during the NFL combine.

Josh Gasser played 148 games as a Badger. I had to just look up the fact he majored in business marketing. I think 4 Badgers were named academic all Big10 (Hayes, Vitto Brown, Dukan, and Moesch). You think someone would mention that during a telecast at some point. They sit at the dais and ask them random questions. Why doesn't anyone ever ask what their favorite class is?  What their major is?

I know why (because they don't want to embarrass the one and doners), but if you are trying to stay with the charade that these guys are student-athletes, why not ask some of them that actually are some relevant questions?

I read an article once, it was about college football, and the author claimed that intercollegiate football rose out of a feeling of angst among certain generations who's fathers had fought in wars. These younger men longed for the feelings of comradery and also the sense of battle their fathers had experienced. In part to prove their worth and manliness.

Why didn't they just join gay bathhouses like the rest of humanity throughout history?  Wait, same thing.

I will complain about the officiating, not the calls themselves but how the refs viewed them. The Badgers committed 2, 2 fouls, in the 1st half.  Are you telling me Bo told them, "Just go hack guys, they won't call anything."  Of course not.  Wisconsin played defense the exact same way in the 2nd as they did in the 1st.  If the Badgers truly did commit 10 fouls by the 9:30 mark of the 2nd half then they should have also committed way more than 2 fouls in the 1st half.   It's like Coach K went into the refs room at the half and told them to start calling more fouls on the Badgers. We got screwed and you all know it.  And yet we still almost won.

I try not to get on the officials too much.  Charge/blocks are tough and are judgment calls for the most part.  I used to ref BB, (not nearly at that level) however, the foot out of bounds kills me.  It is the baseline refs (in that situation) responsibility to watch the baseline.  Any body contact, the two refs on the sidelines take as they have better angles, they can't see the baseline.  Basic Ref 101 school there!

The other is the replay.   I was wondering if they did see the angle that 2.2 billion people did.  I couldn't believe they where that bad.  God forbid the head ref dufus call down and let them know...

I can't remember if it was earlier in this thread, but...

For all those pissing and moaning about Bo "complaining" about the officiating and that it's low class, those same folks (especially Jay "Duke" Bilas) should be all over Coach K for complaining about the officiating at the half.  Basically he said that his guys are going to the rim but only have drawn two fouls and that "has to change" in the second half...It did.

This set worse than me than the Packer loss.  Good chance they'll be back in the hunt for a few years.  UW BB, I'm afraid not so much....

I agree with BK to some extent. The refling was just as bad in the Arizona game if not worse, but Dekker was so hot it didn't matter. the bang-bang calls almost always go to the more aggressive team.

I wasnt really pissed off at all until the story about the out of bounds play posted. Espn now has a liNk.

So, an NCAA rep involved in making the decision knows they have the call wrong and doesn't call the game officials back because he's worried about protocol?  Are you kidding me? They take breaks like this to get the fricking call correct. And he's too scared to make sure it's right? Probably cause he doesn't want to upset Coach K and lose a gig down the road with USA basketball?  There is zero excuse for this. Zero. What a Fukking joke. They were down 5 and this call for all purposes sealed the game. They may not have come back, but come on. Can you imagine if this would have happened to Duke?  Heads would have rolled.

The Coach K comments at the half were no worse than what Bo said yet the Wisconsin coach is demonized.

Uh OK

Justice Winslow should have fouled out twice in the second half alone.   Any junior high official knows that if the defender is set you can't just run the guy over especially if the person is totally out of control.  That was Duke in the second half.

I know the following is simplistic, but given the Badgers had 2 fouls in the first half and 10 in the second half at close to the 10m mark...

1 foul per 10m -> 1 foul per 1m

This is a shift of 10x or 1,000%

Duke changed its offense sufficient to warrant such a shift?  Wisconsin morphed its defense?

1,000%???

In statistical terms, that is quite an anomaly.

There is no denying other factors contributed to the loss.

I am unable to conclude officiating was not a contribution.

Don't worry though Coach K just willed his guys to play so much better and harder in the second half LMAO

I agree with your posts.I am one of those people who don't watch a lot of basketball but I know enough about the rules and could see that something wasn't right.  An intersting thing was discussed on Mike and Mike this morning.  I am not sure who exactly it was but the guy who was in charge of officiating saw that the call on the ball being touched before it went out of bounds play was called wrong. He could have buzzed the officials to take another call or reverse it but he didn't do it.  He also claimed that the refs don't have as good of view that we have at home so that is why they didn't reverse it.

I still don't think UW would have won the game but that call could have changed the whole tempo of the game.

The tempo of the game changed when WI was up by 9 and Duke took a TO. After that it looked like Duke played as if they would never play a college game. Which for nearly everyone on that team they won't. Sure they got some calls, but they were the more aggressive team and then ref's let it go.

Dekker missed a couple outside early and never seemed to find his stride. I remember a coach one time talking about when a player is missing from outside they need to drive and create opportunities (FTs) for points. Dekker didn't.

It's funny- Bo Ryan is taking a lot of criticism because he spoke out about what he felt was a change after halftime in the way the game was being called. And no one's really disputing his observation. But they're criticizing him anyway. Because. Just because.

Yes Krzyzewski says as he's walking off the floor that he was not happy about the way the game was being called, and that "it's going to change". No one connecting the dots here?
