History says 10-12 new players on the roster next year. Question is who. We should start with injuries. Are there any that don't reasonably allow the player to perform in 2012? Free agents? Who does TT say thank you and let walk VS who does he try to sign? What direction does he go in the draft? Finally, before he just lets Clifton and Hawk go who does he replace them with that are better? Just a year ago we won the Super Bowl and he let Jenkins go...how did that work out?

What do you know about Wells football? My guess is nothing

Ahh Digger with his obligatory douchbag post in a otherwise intelligent discussion about future Packer moves by us armchair GM's.

I tell you the guy is a freakin wanker,#%$*head, pencile necked geek who knows everything about nothing!

Ah radman with his obligatory.... wait, wtf.. who are you?

Anyways, I tell it how i see it. Scott Wells is not bad in pass coverage, but he is terrible at getting any type of push in the run game. He is not worth a 3-4 year contract at 6-7M per. Yes, BJ Raji is a bust. Take his stats, take a hard look at them... wet your pants and come back to me and try and argue otherwise. You can't. If you do, you are lying to yourself and this board. He is flat out a turd who has no desire for the game. I think he is talented, but he is talented in the same manner Clet Hunt was.. only when he wants to be.

Why not?

Because of the severity of the break.

I agree. How long did it take Mike Flannigan to get back from his broken leg, 2 seasons? I'm afraid he'll be on the PUP at minimum and may be IR'd after that.
Wow, now I get the Digger thing...what a bozo.

Wells may be an average run blocker but he does make the calls for an offense that scored the MOST points in the NFL last year. He also did a nice job of enabling the NFL's MVP.

Wells may be 30 but he takes great care of his body and is there week in and week out. I think it's very safe to sign him to 3-4 years.

In my mind, I am not ready to say goodbye to Pickett. When he was out of the lineup this year, teams ran at will on the Packers. I think he's still got a couple of good years left as a spaceeater on run downs. No, he can't rush the passer AT ALL which can hurt at times, but there is no doubt, when he is injured you can see teams run wild on the Packers.
Offseason Moves:

Lose:
Flynn (UFA)
Walden (UFA)
Grant (UFA)
Driver (Mutually agreed release)
H. Green (UFA)

Re-Sign:
Bush...3 years, 6 million, 3 million guaranteed with a 1.5 million Signing Bonus. That's a good enough deal that it will entice him into staying but not big enough that we're obligated to do anything with him and we can dump him easily if needed.

I offer Finley a 5 year deal worth 20 million, 10 million guaranteed with a 3 million Signing Bonus. That's a very competitive and fair deal for a TE that still has a lot to prove. If he doesn't take it, then he walks. It's a solid front loaded deal for the team also. We have the cap room to pay him this kind of money up front and if he continues to under perform then we're protected and it wouldn't be hard to dump him.

Franchise:
Scott Wells

I'm going to offer Wells a 3 year deal worth 15 million, 8 million is guaranteed with a 5 million signing bonus. That's a really fair deal that is competitive with the rest of the top Centers in the NFL. It's a lot up front also and not a lot on the tail end when he's 33/34 and declining.

I would draft a Center to replace him. This draft, top to bottom, has a lot of talent at Center. We could grab a good guy to groom in any round IMO.

This draft has a lot of good OLB prospects, but none of them are elite rushers like Von Miller. We shouldn't get our expectations too high about our pass rush getting a great rusher. There's a really good player I see them targeting in round 2 or 3...Boise St. OLB Shea McClellin. Just a really solid all around athlete. Reminds me a lot of Clay Matthews.

I could see them going DL heavy honestly. This is a good draft for DL and we will get a solid player in any round IMO.

With the great need for defense in the draft and if a Jones trade is made like many suggest and Driver is let go we need a replacement in the WR corp TT must still look into offense. There is a player in the 3rd or 4th round that would be the Welker and Hester type; that would be Joe Adams out of Arkansas. He was a Senior Bowl standout and led the nation in punt returns and most NFL scouts predict he is in the 3rd or 4th.

Wells is a priority to re-sign, tag Finley, let Lee go and re-sign Bush. Don't think there is really a chance Flynn can be tagged so seek a trade ot let him go FA and get a comp pick.
Why would we trade James Jones. I still don't get this line of thinking. What value does he have? We re-signed him because he had no other substantial offers. What would we get in a trade for him that would be worth it? Nothing IMO. They go with the 4 WR they have and let Gurley, Borrell and a rookie 7th rounder fight for the #5 spot.
Digger, Clifton’s salary does not exist in a vacuum. While we do not know what the 2012 cap number we do know it will be flat. The way it looks the Packers do not have a lot of cap space now and need about 5 million to sign their draft picks. A 5 million dollar back up simply will be cap suicide. And do not forget that if Clifton is on the squad the first day of the new season the Packers owe him the whole 5 million.

The JJ haters will do anything to justify letting him go. They'd rid him for nothing. Makes no sense. He's a decent player, a match up nightmare for many teams and his contract is quite small at 3 mil per.

I mentioned trading James Jones in my breakdown on the first page. I agree, he is worth very little. However, he has a favorable contract. If someone valued him at a 4th round pick, I'd trade him. Not because I don't like him, but rather because he is firmly 3rd on the depth chart at WR, and Cobb may be in his spot. They could use the reps to develop Cobb and the other young WRs, while allocating Jones' money to other areas of need.

I don't hate James Jones. I was glad they signed him. I realize a trade of him is a long shot. But if they could get a 4th, it would be a move I'd make.
Interesting

James Jones was a 3rd round pick, now you trade him for a 4th ?

The strength of the Packers offense is having a very deep WR corps that creates match-up problems for defenses and takes advantage of the skills of the best player on the team. There isn't a 4th round WR who can do what Jones does in 2012 or 2013, so you have downgraded a strength in exchange for a 4th round pick that may or may not even make the team.

Doesn't seem like a "value" move to me and one thing this front office hangs their hat on is value.

Do you also remember Rodgers coming out in favor of keeping Mr.Jones ?
Why do you suppose he did that ?

Here are the 4th rounders under TT : Marviel Underwood, Will Blackmon, Cory Rodgers, Allen Barbre, Josh Sitton, Jeremy Thompson, TJ Lang, Davon House- a batting average of 25 % so far...

Trade a proven NFL player for a 25 % shot at an unproven player ?
Part of me doesn't see Clifton coming back and being released soon, but he was there started in 2011. As soon as he was healthy again, he was the starter. That tells me they like what Clifton can do more than they like what Newhouse can offer. He's an expensive insurance policy, but they will have the cap room to do it.

Then again, 5.25 million is a lot for a back-up and they didn't keep Tauscher who was in a very similar situation a couple years ago. If it were me, I would keep him and pay him, but my gut tells me they will release Clifton this offseason. I absolutely won't be surprised if he's the starter on opening day though.
I can't see a scenario where we'd get much of anything for James Jones. Apparently teams weren't willing to give him the contract he signed with Green Bay last offseason when they didn't have to give up any draft picks. I'm not sure why they would be willing to that now + give up something meaningful.

I also think Driver is as good as gone. It's not just his salary -- it's that he's too far down on the depth chart now. Cobb is a playmaker -- he needs to get on the field more than he did last year. You're better off swapping Gurley for Driver at the #5 WR spot. Gurley will make less, play special teams, and is younger and can develop.
JJ for a fourth? Why? The odds of getting a better player than JJ for a fourth are minimal, so why trade him? He makes a fair amount and is a good locker room guy. I just don't see the upside of getting ANOTHER 4th for JJ when they'll likely have 3 fourth rounders once comp picks are handed out.

I don't think Clifton comes back. He barely played this year and Newhosue has shown he's a starting LT in this league. With a full offseason, I bet he'll be better than Clifton. While depth is an issue, you can't bring back Clifton as a backup for $7m (or whatever he's making). Same with Driver. I'd be shocked if Cobb doesn't surpass him. If DD is #4 WR on the field being covered with a LB, just think how good Cobb would be when covered by an LB. Sorry DD, it's just time.
