I go back and look at those numbers from 2018-19 and it doesn't seem real.
Yelich fouled that ball off his kneecap on September 10, 2019. In the calendar year before that injury he had played in 148 games. In those games, he had 186 hits in 543 at-bats with 97 walks. He scored 120 runs. He had 35 stolen bases in 37 attempts. In those games he hit 343 with 52 home runs and 121 RBIs. He had 388 total bases.
His on-base percentage was 442 and his SLG of 714 for an OPS of 1156. Mike Trout's highest OPS for a season is 1090. It's Babe Ruth/Barry Bonds level of hitting.
It was absolutely insane. In one game in 2018, St. Louis walked him 5 times. I would watch most games in that stretch and, if I had something else going on, I would often sneak away during a dinner meeting just to watch his at-bats during the pennant race.
From about the all-star break in 2018 until he broke his kneecap, it was like watching Giannis play Game 6 in the Finals for almost every game.
Now, he's the biggest albatross of a contract they've ever had. At least Braun was still a very good power hitter for the majority of his contract.
LambeauSouth mentioned above that they need to rebuild the offense. But they can't really do that with him sucking up 20% of the salary total and hitting him 3rd or 4th.
He's got 5 more years fully guaranteed.
