Fights escalate quickly at Packers practice

By Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel 08-07-13

One player who lost his helmet in the madness was Barrington, who hasn't been bashful all camp. Since drawing the ire of McCarthy Day 1 in pads for his wincing hit of Jeremy Ross, Barrington has been making noise in this inside-running drill.

The drill, he said, is "real football." A few linemen on each side smack into each other with a running back carrying the ball.

"If you're a linebacker, a fullback, a lineman, if you don't love that drill, something's got to be wrong with you," Barrington said. "That just shows how much this team wants to compete and get better and sometimes it gets heated. But I guarantee it's nothing personal. It's all about love and it's just football.

"You have to go in there and get your fit. This is the NFL. So if you half-step, you might get put on your butt. You have to go in there and give it all you've got. But at the same time, you have to be smart and not do anything foolish to hurt your team."

As for his collision with Lang, Barrington said it was "just a little emotion."

As for himself, his own style of play, the seventh-round pick from South Florida said he plays the game one way.

"This game was created for -- not just for guys to go out and showcase their athletic ability -- it's for the gladiators," Barrington said. "Anybody who knows anything about the Greek mythology, gladiators don't go out there to be nice to anybody. So that's kind of how I see myself. You go to war every day. You have to take it like you're out there to take a guy's head off. You have to have that mentality. Because if you don't, the next guy will. You'll be defeated."

Quotes make him real easy to root for in the preseason games.  Kid has a great passion for football.  Some people were born to be LBs, he seems like one of them. Zombo's old number, yes?

Sam just speaking the truth.  Some poor OL is going to try to blow up a defensive player so a RB can get a running start at running over or through anything or body between the dum-dums.  I loved that drill more than life which maybe isn't a lot after 42 years.

When a defensive player blows up a OL into the running back for a loss I guarantee fists are usually flying unless the OL is a pussy.  Good to know Lang took it personal.

Heck, when we ran this drill they didn't even have a blocker. Called it "blood alley" tackling dummies would be about 10 feet apart. 2 players about 10 feet apart on their backs (heads facing each other), coach blows the whistle, throws the ball to one of the players & he has to run between the dummies with the other player trying to tackle him head on. Talk about violent collisions! It is a wonder we all don't have some permanent brain damage....or maybe we do!
