Which team was the better team? I was talking to someone about this today and his opinion was the 96 team simply because of special teams and the abilities of Desmond Howard in the return game. I really like this years team better I think but it is really hard to pick one over the other.

The 1196 was one of the best teams in NFL history and the most underated team in NFL history. This years team was not quite as good. They were 10-6 for starters. In two or three years when TT's team truly matures, WATCH OUT!
In my lifetime(of watching--I'm a bit younger than Tuna)I rank the championship teams in the following order:

1. 1966
2. 1996
3. 1965
4. 2010
5. 1967

Of those 5 teams the 2010 team is my absolute favorite. I can't recall a team ever stepping up as individuals and as a team and getting it done the way this team did it. With each injury another man stepped up and TT went and got another body to fill the spot on the bench. Sometimes those bodies had to step in also.

The staff consistently had these guys ready to play.

The players made the plays when they had to, win the game and season were on the line they got it done. Hell even Flynn got it done against the Patroits.

They will be my favorite until another Packer team can come along and do them one better on teamwork, on playing as a team, yet making individual plays.

Honesty don't expect to see it again in my lifetime, because I have never seen anything like it before.
'96 was the better team overall.

'10 team playoff run may have been more exciting and the payoff of a Super Bowl may have been even more satisfying because the '10 team had a lot more adversity to overcome. Had the '10 team been a bit healthier, we may have seen them dominate from start to finish like the '96 team did (other than a 3 week span), but we will never know exactly how dominant they could have been with the horrendous bad luck they had on the injury front.

Great posting, oldnavy. I can't remember the '62 team but it sure sounds like the best. I'd add that the 1967 team is of course immortal as the last of the 5 championship teams, the Ice Bowl, Vince's swan song, etc. If there was ever an example of a team getting through the tournament on experience and moxie that is the one. The last drive in the Ice Bowl will always be for me the greatest drive in NFL history.

2010 is much more satisfying to me than 1996. 1996 team was expected to win it all both pre-season and once the play-offs started. This 2010 team just amazed with its response to adversity.
Do you consider the '96 team better based on record alone? If the '96 team was to have the same number of players go down what would have their record been? An argument could be made that the team depth, and ability to overcome adversity in 2010 makes it the better 'TEAM'. '96 loses 3 games by 21 points total, while '10 loses 6 by a total of 20 points.

The 96 team was better for my health, just due to the less stressful nature of the games, or is the heart rate raising nature of the 2010 season a better cardio workout and has actually added years to my life?
Putting aside the argument of which team is better, because they really are in different eras, I'll tell you which Super Bowl victory was more satisfying for me. This one.

1996 was special because it was the first Packer SB in my lifetime. This one is gratifying on so many more levels, however. From a GM that was under siege by a sizable portion of the fan base from the day he rolled into town, a coach that many wrote off as too stupid to make any noise in the league, to maybe the messiest divorce of iconic player and his franchise in the history of professional sports, the doubters of that player's replacement, all the injuries and adversity that had to be overcome...yeah the 2010 team is much more special, IMO.

I daresay the story of the 2010 Packers may be one of the best in the history of the NFL. They were written off for dead midseason. To persevere and overcome everything they did...that's something that doesn't happen very often. Also, I truly believe this could be the start of a dynasty, which adds to the allure of this year's Packers.

One more thing, I think it's also cool that the 2010 Packers beat an iconic franchise in the Super Bowl, getting us closer to their ring total. When the 1996 team beat the Patriots, it was great, but that franchise was nothing compared to what they are now.
The 1996 team led the NFL in offense, in defense, and in special teams. They stumbled mid-season with all the injuries to the receivers.

The 1962 team may be the best in NFL history (certainly a top 3).
I'll take the 2010 team too. Remember, they were never behind by more than 7 points in any game. That is amazing in my book. Crosby makes a FG instead of hitting an upright and we're 11-5. Refs make the correct call in Miami and we're 12-4. James Jones holds onto the ball at Chicago and we're 13-3. Matt Wilhelm gets facemask penalty on a kick-off that gives Atlanta a short field and they get a FG as time expires to win. Without that penalty it's probably a tie and who knows what overtime brings. Maybe 12-2. And if Rodgers play the whole Detroit game and the New England game we could have been 16-0 . This was a better team, maybe not statistically, but in actual play better than 1996.
I remember all the champ teams. Although it is very hard to rank these teams
against each other, my opinion:

1. 1962- young and very hungry - knew they would win after that Lions debacle.Vince whipped them into a frenzy after that game. Unstoppable freight train after that!!!
2. 1961- young and very hungry - ticked they lost Eagles game- knew they were better
3. 1996 - knew they were the best- ticked after previous Dallas games
4. 1966 - On a roll, started to get a bit older- still good experience
5. 1965 - After two years without a title were on a mission to get it back.
6. 1967 - Starting to get old in many places. Won because of experience and desire, and craftiness. Very interesting season.. Also, had many injuries that year.
7. 2010- still as a team do not know what they won. Inexperience helped in many ways. Desire also played large part. Watch what this team will do in future.

By the way, IMHO the 63 team that lost out to the Bears for the division champ
was one of their best ever. Probably would put them number 2 in this ranking.
Missed some of the breaks that season, hurt that Hornung was suspended all year.
Probably win with him. Shows how good the Bears were that year. They were indeed monsters.
If we're going to rank teams, you can't play the hypothetical "but with the injuries" card. Because once you do, then there are all kinds of scenarios that could play out with either team. I think the 96ers were a better team. Except for that 3 game rough spot, they pretty much dominated from wk1 to sb31. We'll see in the near future how good this current bunch is if they can stay clear enough of the IR. The potential is there for greatness.
What it comes down to is if this team repeats it will be looked at as better than the 96 team. Its possible offense and defense are both capable of being #1 in the league.

Also next year we get to play the AFC West. I will take that over the AFC East every time.
People forget how dominant that 1996 team was. They won 7 games by 25 points or more, an NFL record that I believe still stands.

They won 9 of their 13 regular season games and all 3 playoff games by 14 points or more. 12 out of 16 victories by at least 2 TDs. That is pure domination.

They had the best offense, the best defense and the best special teams. They are one of the best teams in the Super Bowl era.

As someone else said you can't play the "if this, if that" game because when you do that you fail to address the "ifs" that could have gone against the Packers this year. Like what if Quarless' TD is challenged? What if Jim Schwartz hadn't chickened out and went for it on 4th down? What if Detroit doesn't pull out a miracle and beat the Bucs? What if Jay Cutler didn't suck?

This year was more entertaining and next year they have alegit chance to supplant that 96 team.

I don't think the 1196 team makes a good comparison since most of the good players went off to fight in the crusades that year.
The 1962 team was indeed dominant. They scored 30 or more points in 8 of there 13 games. And if they did not lead the league in defense, they were in the top 3. But they did not have any injuries to overcome that I am aware of.

The 1965 team also remained healthy as far as I can remember and won an NFL championship.

The 1966 team also was healthy as far as I can remember. In the first SB they overcame 2 pass interference penalties, a Starr to Dale TD pass that was called back because of illegal motion penalty, and a Starr interception. And they still won 35-10.

The 1967 team had injuries to the RBs and Starr missed 2 games with injuries. Pitts and Grabowski went out with achillies tendon injuries. Taylor left GB for the NO Saints as a FA. Played out his option. Hornung was injured and did not play that year. So in steppd Donny Anderson, rookie Travis Williams, Chuck Mercen, and Ben Wilson - in various combinations. Won the second SB that included a timeout while players looked for Ben Wilson's contact lens. At least that is when I thought that happened in.

The 1996 was healthy except for the WRs, and picked up Rison who helped GB get to the playoffs and win it. They were as dominating as stated here.

The 2010 team on the other hand had injuries to several positions. After I had written off the seasson, they qualified for the playoffs. I thought that's nice, maybe they will win a game this time. Then they made it to the SB and won. Drained me emotionally in the process. The next moring on my way in to work when the sports segment came on, they started with the words "No longer will injuries be an acceptable excuse for not winning a championship in any professional sport. The GB Packers won the super bowl with .....". They went on to talk about those who played hurt as well as those on IR.

So for pure dominance, 1962 & 1996.

For the team that had to overcome the most: 2010 - and for that reason my favorite.
