Family Night notes: Young DBs shine, Eddie Lacy leads productive ground game

by Mike Spofford on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

–Young DBs shine: All the injuries at cornerback for the Packers have led to extra reps for a lot of prospects, and that paid off for two young corners on Saturday.

Brandon Smith, an unknown 26-year-old who was out of football the past two years, shocked everyone with an interception on the first day of practice, but he showed on Saturday that maybe it wasn’t a fluke.

He had tight coverage on Ross in the end zone, spun around at the right moment and snagged Coleman’s underthrown jump ball.

“I just read his eyes,” Smith said. “His eyes got big, so I whipped my head around and jumped up as high as I can to make the play."

Lacy blasts ahead: Rookie second-round pick Eddie Lacy posted powerful runs of 16, 19 and 8 yards amongst his handful of carries.

“I think Eddie definitely has picked it up here the last 3-4 days,” McCarthy said. “This is our longest stretch of practices in a row, and it’s important for guys to take that step, and he’s definitely getting more and more comfortable with the things we’re doing.”

Lacy concurred.

“I’m very comfortable, a lot more comfortable than when I first got in. but it’s going to continue to be a progression,” Lacy said. “I still have things I need to learn and make sure I’m not second-guessing myself no matter what they call. There’s still room for improvement.”

–O-line update: McCarthy didn’t rule Don Barclay out of the right tackle competition, but it’s worth noting that the first sub for Marshall Newhouse at the position was rookie fourth-round pick David Bakhtiari.

Equally interesting, Barclay actually took some snaps at right guard in place of T.J. Lang with the No. 1 line.

“I give Don a lot of credit,” McCarthy said. “He’s doing what’s best for the team, and what’s best for the offensive line unit is that he’s versatile. We aren’t just letting him line up and play right tackle.”

Mason Crosby’s performance 'not going to cut it'

by Mike Spofford on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

Mike McCarthy didn’t try to sugarcoat what he witnessed from veteran kickerMason Crosby on Saturday night.

Mason Crosby is competing for a job on our football team, like everybody else, and he definitely didn’t take a step in the right direction with his performance,” McCarthy said.

“I’m not going to talk about if I’m worried or not,” Crosby said. “This is my job, this is what I want to do. I have to go out and perform. I didn’t do that tonight, and I have to take advantage of my next opportunity.”

“I had a great week of work,” Crosby said. “That’s what’s disappointing. I had a good session the other day, and all the field goals I hit this week were solid. It’s something I want to evaluate and look at, and if anything I have to learn from it and move on.”

Packers insider: Thumbs up to Nixon, down to Franklin

by Pete Dougherty on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

Cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt has been saying all offseason that James Nixon is the one Packers player who might be as fast or faster than Sam Shields, and on Saturday night Nixon showed his impressive speed.

The first-year pro, who was on the Packers’ practice squad most of last season, made two plays that jumped out during the Family Night scrimmage.

The first was in kickoff coverage, when Jeremy Ross found a seam on the left side. Ross is fast, but Nixon, who started on the opposite side of the field, quickly closed down a 10-yard gap from behind and pushed Ross out of bounds at about his 44-yard line.

Did you notice?

■ With cornerbacks Tramon Williams (knee) and Casey Hayward (hamstring) out, the starting cornerback opposite Shields was Davon House. Rookie Micah Hyde was the nickel cornerback with the No. 1 defense, and safety Jerron McMillian was the dime slot cover man when the defense went to six defensive backs. continue

Notebook: Lacy looks like power back the offense has needed

by Weston Hodkiewicz on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

After replacing James Starks during the team’s no-huddle drill once the first-team offense reached the red zone, Lacy finished the night with eight carries for 61 yards unofficially and looked like the short-yardage power back the Packers’ offense has lacked the past few seasons.

“It was good, man. I haven’t felt like that since I pretty much left college,” Lacy said. “The offensive line did a great job. I pressed the block the way I was coached to press the defense and the offensive linemen made their blocks, and I was able to cut up field and get big yards.”

Williams waits

Tramon Williams confirmed he’s had a “couple different doctors” look over the preliminary scans of the knee he injured in one of the opening periods of last Saturday’s practice.

“It wasn’t a tear at all, so that’s definitely a good sign,” said Williams, whom Packers coach Mike McCarthy said is expected to miss a couple of weeks. “I’m not concerned much at all. At this point, I’m just sitting and resting it. According to the doctors, it’s not serious. That’s about all we can do at this point.” continue

Crosby's job in doubt after shaky kicking performance

by Mike Vandermause on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

“I’m way past that,” Crosby said of last season. “I’m just going and working on things. Tonight I didn’t hit the ball the way I wanted to. I didn’t hit it on the lines I wanted to. I had great lift, hit some good balls, just picked some bad lines. That’s something I really need to work on.”

Harrell still leads backup QB battle after Coleman's rough Family Night

by Pete Dougherty on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

Harrell had the much more efficient performance of the two in the Packers’ Family Night scrimmage at Lambeau Field. He handled only two series but put up 10 points and unofficially completed nine of 12 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown.

“I thought Graham played very well,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “I thought he did a good job, was it the first drive? Went in the there and played well, had the long drive on the (No. 1) defense. I thought he did a lot of good things. I thought he was very composed, he distributed the ball, had a number of checks at the line of scrimmage. I thought Graham Harrell had a very good night.” continue

Packers' Eddie Lacy impressive during intrasquad scrimmage

by Bob McGinn on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

After James Starks started and played well, Lacy carried once early for 2 yards. A few minutes later, he took the field behind the No. 1 offensive line and put on a show.

Lacy carried for 7, then followed fullback Jonathan Amosa for 16 yards off the right side.

On his next attempt, Lacy pressed a hole off right tackle and cut back behind a block by Evan Dietrich-Smith for a gain of 19 from a one-back set.

Coach Mike McCarthy gave Lacy the ball on the next play and he picked up 4. From the 27, he charged into a modest hole at left tackle, surged ahead and fell forward for 8. Then he picked up the first down with a carry for 4 on the next play.

Running backs:Starks dropped a pass in the right flat but then came back on a screen to gain 23 yards.

"Having a great camp," Van Pelt said of Starks on Thursday. "Doing things right. He understands the system and the protections. He's got the run game down. He's making good reads and he's running hard."

The snap counts were: Lacy 17, Starks 16, Franklin 15, Green 13 and Pease 2.

Franklin carried seven times for 17 yards, Green had three rushes for 19 and Starks was four for 13. In all, the five backs rushed 22 times for 114 (5.2). continue

Datone Jones sees red, comes ready to sack

by Tyler Dunne on Saturday, August 4th, 2013

Defensive line: As they should, the first-team defense mostly handled the second-team offensive line in the run game. Back-up Johnathan Franklin had practically no running room against the likes of B.J. Raji, C.J. Wilson, Ryan Pickett and Jones. Raji, in a contract year, will need to live in the backfield more to warrant a long-term deal. Shedding blockers is his emphasis this summer. On Saturday, he shot upfield to flush Coleman out of the pocket.

Specialists:Mike McCarthy challenged Ross to win the return game this past week, saying if the season started now, Randall Cobb was his returner. Saturday night, Ross took his first kickoff 49 yards...continue

Fox Sports Wisconsin:

by Paul Imig on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

Noted:
- The No. 1 kickoff coverage unit consisted of: Jeremy Ross, Terrell Manning, Jarrett Boykin, Morgan Burnett, Micah Hyde, D.J. Williams, Sam Barrington, Ryan Taylor, Jarrett Bush, Robert Francois

- Rookie linebacker Sam Barrington did a good job reading a screen pass from B.J. Coleman to Johnathan Franklin, stuffing the play behind the line of scrimmage for a loss.

- Datone Jones almost forgot that he wasn't supposed to hit quarterbacks (who were wearing red jerseys) when he came flying at Coleman.

Jones let up in plenty of time, but with the speed he was going, it was a good indication that he'll likely get in a few big hits on quarterbacks this season. continue

ESPN NFC North Blog:

Analyzing the Packers’ options at kicker

by Rob Demovsky on Sunday, August 4th, 2013

After watching the most extended head-to-head kicking period of training camp during Saturday night’s scrimmage, it would have been reasonable to walk out of Lambeau Field thinking the Green Bay Packers might have to look elsewhere for their kicker.

At this point, however, there aren’t a lot of other options.

Of the kickers listed on the NFL’s inactive player list, only three have any significant NFL experience: Nate Kaeding, David Buehler and Justin Medlock. Kaeding said this spring that he was retiring because of recurring injuries, Buehler was always considered more of a kickoff specialist and Medlock’s agent, Frank Murtha, said Sunday afternoon that he had not heard anything from the Packers.

There’s also long list of kickers still available who have been with teams for short periods of time in various offseasons but never stuck.

The other option is to wait and see what kickers currently in other training camps get released later in the preseason.

For now, that means the Packers will have to hope Crosby works through his slump or Tavecchio shows them enough. continue
