Given the conservative nature of the Packers' front office and the three years already invested in Harrell, it would take a tremendous training camp and preseason for Coleman to assume the backup role.

They had Flynn backing up AR as a rookie and that's not a conservative move. It'll probably come down to Coleman's upside and whether they believe they can get away with stashing him on the PS. If they feel Coleman is the better long-term prospect I can easily see them rolling the dice and cutting Harrell loose.

They've done the same practice squad move with Harrell when Flynn was here.

You're assuming though that Coleman would stay on the PS if he was put there. Certainly a QB with his natural ability will draw interest from other teams so I doubt he would pass over opportunities to go elsewhere for a 2nd year in a row. I think whoever they pick they will lose the other one. The difference with Harrell being on the PS and Coleman is that no other team wanted Harrell when he was a FA...he was/is a Mike McCarthy project.

Ted Thompson didn't invest a pick in Coleman just to see him gone after 1.5 seasons. If push comes to shove I think they will pick the guy who has a lot of upside and they have invested a decent amount in over a FA who probably won't improve beyond what he is now.
The Packers had a couple of guys on the practice squad who, when other teams came calling, got raises and roster spots. I'd think the Packers could probably match any offer Coleman is likely to get. Without seeing him play in real games, teams aren't going to throw first round veteran compensation at him even if they are desperate.
If Coleman thinks about leaving.......TT/MM should just show him what happened to Brohm's career when a better "opportunity" came up in Buffalo.

IMO, any young developing QB would be an idiot to leave Green Bay. MM has proven to be the best QB coach in the league, getting Favre's best late in his career, turning Rodgers into the best QB in the league, and turning an undersized 7th rounder with a weak arm into a starting QB (Flynn). Don't forget turning Aaron Brooks into a competent QB in New Orleans.
Egos can be big factor though aometimes for these young players I think though. Gets passed over for the 53 two years in a row and some other team is gonna put him on their roster, he might chase the opportunity rather than think logically about what McCarthy could do for him. That's speculation though, he may want to really want to be in GB and would stay on the PS. I think GB really likes him though which is why they paid extra to keep him in GB. Just a guess, but I think they risk giving the younger player with more upside the shot.
The way I look at it:

If you're BJ you look and realize that Harrell is on the last year of his contract. Knowing that the Packers draft and develop you're in a fantastic position for the #2 spot next year and you get to develop your skills in a QB driven system under the best QB coaches in the game and learn from the best QB in the game without having the pressure of winning the starting job. You also know if you get a chance to play chances are you're going to look good.

Your goal for this season should be to make that next step and give the coaches enough confidence in you to let Harrell walk after the season.

Any team that's interested in signing BJ is going to be desperate for a QB and those are the kinds of teams that tend to draft one high and be forced to play them. He's also going back to square one on terminology and culture. If an offer comes and his agent has half a brain he'll recommend that BJ should stay in GB (and then negotiate a raise).

Brohm left because he knew for certain he was the third best QB and wasn't going anywhere on the depth chart any time soon. A new start made sense for him. Brohm was also a more highly touted prospect. The interest for BJ I don't believe will be nearly the same.

I expect to see BJ late in the preseason games to keep him from looking too good. Even if the production isn't there MM can work with him on his thought process while reviewing tape. That's the important part and something no other team has access to.
