Efficient 2-minute drill to end practice, four plays, 70 yards in 26 seconds capped by a 15-yard TD from Rodgers to Finley.

The defense still sucks!

EDS might very well be the second most important guy on the team.  That's an uncomfortable thought.  I thought for sure Lang would get some chances at center and they'd let Barclay go for a RT  start spot or backup guard spot.

Well worth the click.  Paul Imig camp reports are the tops, imo.  In one post he concisely wraps everything up and he consistently has the most robust notebook. Example:

- Mike Daniels continues to be a player to watch -- and listen to. Not only does he use his superior strength to bully offensive linemen around but he also is one of the most vocal players on the team. When defensive line coach Mike Trgovac made a comment to Daniels following one combo-drill play, Daniels fired back loudly, defending himself by saying that he did the right thing. Trgovac didn't seem to mind Daniels' fiery response.

Would have been interesting to see how Tretter worked himself into consideration.

Based on how Daniels and Jones have been destroying guys like Lewis, Hughes, and Van Roten, you have to worry about depth. Sounds like Gerhart is battling. Love Bakhtiari's work so far. Looks like that's a potential genius/steal pick.

Get healthy Sherrod!

News & notes: Sharp two-minute drill for offense

by Mike Spofford on Friday, August 2nd, 2013

Friday night’s practice ended with a crisply executed two-minute drill during which QB Aaron Rodgers needed just four snaps and 36 seconds to score a TD.

Rodgers began the drive with back-to-back 15-yard completions to WR Jeremy Ross. He then hit WR James Jones down the sideline for a 25-yard gain before zipping a 15-yard TD pass to TE Jermichael Finley. The drive began with just 56 seconds on the clock and the offense needing a touchdown. Rodgers was 4-for-4 for 70 yards, and the score came with 20 seconds to spare.

“The two-minute drive was very clean for the offense,” Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. “Aaron was very sharp. It was clean on every single play. He does a phenomenal job with the cadence.

Obviously he had the big play there (to Jones), and the ball to Jermichael. That was very well done.”

–RB James Starks continued a solid first week of camp with an impressive rep in the one-on-one blitz pickup drill against the outside linebackers. Rather inconsistent through his career picking up blitzes, Starks cleanly kept Palmer at bay.

–The absences of Lattimore and Jones at inside linebacker led to rookie seventh-round draft pick Sam Barrington taking a series of reps alongside A.J. Hawk with the first defense in team work.

Earlier in practice, Barrington had a thunderous collision with FB John Kuhn in the half-line running drill that was perhaps the loudest pop of pads in camp thus far.

Also, during team work, DL Johnny Jolly burst into the backfield and stripped RB Alex Green of the ball. CB Brandon Smith recovered for the defense.

“Good play for the defense, bad play for the offense,” McCarthy said. “I thought it was a good play by Johnny, it’s unacceptable by Alex. That’s part of training against one another.” continue

Post-practice McCarthy: Green fumbles; Quarless, Nelson sit

by Weston Hodkiewicz on Friday, August 2nd, 2013

On Jordy Nelson sitting out:
Jordy banged his knee like two days ago. Worked through it. He’s still being evaluated. It’s a little recurrence of an old injury.

On practice:
Thought it was a good practice. I thought the energy was where it needs to be. That was our seventh install of eight. I like where we are schematically. I’m sure to see what the mental errors will come out when we evaluate the film but I thought the offense had three or four segments where they looked like they were supposed to. I think the defense, particularly on the backend, and the overall coverage of our defense – the coverage was tighter, competing for balls. That’s just something as you go through training camp you can see your team coming in sync. I think we definitely took a step towards that.

On Andy Mulumba (#46):
Mulumba’s doing good. I’ve liked him since the spring. I thought he jumped out in the spring. It’s been no different since he put the pads on. I think he’s an excellent fit for our defense. He plays with excellent leverage with his long leverage. He has a nasty streak to him. I thought Donte Savage has jumped out here the past two days, too. I’m very happy with that outside linebacker group. continue
Very detailed recap of MM's presser.  Well worth the click.

Insider: Thumbs up to Mulumba, down to RB Green

by Pete Dougherty on August 2nd, 2013

Thumbs up

It’s almost a given at least one undrafted rookie will make the Packers’ final roster, and perhaps more – 11 have made final cuts at the end of camp the last four years combined. The best undrafted rookie so far this year is Andy Mulumba, who’s giving himself a fighting chance to make it as the No. 4 or 5 outside linebacker. Mulumba (6-feet-3 and 260 pounds) is making the transition from a hand-on-the-ground defensive end at Eastern Michigan to a standup player in the Packers’ 3-4 defense.

Did you notice?

When starting linebacker Brad Jones dropped out of practice because of a finger injury, rookie Sam Barrington (#58) replaced him in the base defense. continue

Past the click, Pete Dougherty has lots more on Malumba, thumbs down to Alex Green, Notes on Jolly, House, and Mike Daniels

Backup QB battle shows some sizzle

by Weston Hodkiewicz on Friday, August 2nd, 2013

The ups and downs are still measurable through the first week of this year’s training camp, but Coleman has returned a more polished product than he was a year ago with intangibles that make the competition behind Rodgers much more interesting.

“This year, it is 50-50. It’s right down the middle as opposed to last year when I got to clean up a rep or two at the end of each period,” Coleman said. “This year, I’m getting five reps a period and get a chance to get comfortable in there and get a little bit of a rhythm. That’s what it’s all about.”

Through the first week of camp, reps have been split nearly equally between Harrell and Coleman. Last year, Rodgers would take the first four or five snaps in team drills, Harrell would get a few throws and one or two would trickle down to Coleman.

Like the Packers did with Brett Favre when he reached the midway point of his career, this camp appears to be the turning point for reducing the workload for Rodgers, who’ll turn 30 in December and signed a five-year, $110 million extension in April.

Coleman still possesses the same slight gunslinger mentality he had at Chattanooga, where he was picked off 31 times in 29 career starts. During Wednesday’s practice, Coleman had passes plucked away by A.J. Hawk and Morgan Burnett in team periods. continue

If you want to get caught up on where the number two battle is at this is the article for you.  Four pages and lots more past the click including analysis from offensive coordinator Tom Clements

Packers camp report: Friday at a glance

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

Thumbs Up

This year, the free-agent rookie in camp is RB Angelo Pease of Kansas State, who is faster and a better prospect than Tyler. He's running No.6 at the position and would need a miracle to make the team, but don't be surprised if he comes back on the practice squad.

On Friday night, Pease had the unenviable assignment of blocking Nick Perry three times in the one-on-one edge blitz drill. Enjoying a five-yard head start and a 50-pound weight advantage, Perry decisioned Pease in their first joust. On the next two, however, Pease showed absolutely no fear and neutralized Perry each time.

Pease received just 96 carries in two seasons for the Wildcats but continues to impress the Packers.

"He's not bad, I'll tell you," RB coach Alex Van Pelt said Thursday. "He's a good pass protector. He's got a good feel for the run game. I'm excited to see what he can do in the preseason. There's a chance. I like his ability."

■ The position swapping in the offensive line continued, with RT Marshall Newhouse taking a sizable number of snaps behind LT Bryan Bulaga. That allowed rookie RT David Bakhtiari to work extensively with the starters.

■ After Jones exited, A.J. Hawk replaced him as the dime LB. But in a 2-minute drive to end the 2-hour, 9-minute practice, Terrell Manning replaced Hawk.

continue

Past the click, a brutal night for the CBs in their one on ones with the WRs. a recap of Johnny Jolly's one on one work, which backup guard showed some improvement, and who picked off Harrell to end one of the practice segments.

Packers' Jerron McMillian is talking trash, backing it up

CB coach Joe Whitt is high on his group from one to nine, but on this night the charges of WR coach Edgar Bennett dominated.

I think you're going to see the offense dominate in most games this season as long as we have health at the WR position.

Conversely, I'll be surprised if the DB's lose "11-2" in any game we play this year.
