The Packers traded for Brett Favre. Where has the time gone?

I was living in Boston and thinking "well at least it was only one 1st round pick and not like the Hadl trade"
I was in the military in N. Carolina and I remember thinking two things. The first was well that's typical Packers trading a first round pick for a guy who is 3rd string for a so-so team. The second thing I thought was I wonder if they will ever get it right?
Little did I know how fun things would get and it would be awesome to be Packers fan for the first time in my life.
I wasnβt upset as I actually had followed him a bit in his college career since I was the same age as he was. That said, thereβs no way in hell I thought that someday heβd be regarded as one of the top 12 QBs to ever play the game.
Getting Wolf, Holmgren, and Favre were all part of the beginning of the turnaround of the franchise and getting Reggie White 1 year later cemented them as a team to be reckoned with.
Really wasn't familiar with Favre and assumed Wolf knew what he was doing.

The foundation for all this was Bob Harlan taking over for Parins in the 1989. Infante was already the coach and Braatz was GM and that was the year of the Majik man, so Harlan didn't get a chance to put his own stamp on the organization until the Packers regressed in 1991.
Glad it was just the 1st Rounder. Had it been a 1st and a 4th.....yikes! Donβt think the 96 SB wouldβve been worth it.
Even though this post reflects 1992 I think back to the previous year and I was in a tent in Saudi Arabia waiting for the Gulf War to begin. I received my 1991 Packer Report Draft Guide with a handwritten note from a Packer Report staff member - and I anxiously perused it looking for Farve because I was anxious to see what they had to say about him, because he certainly made ripples his junior year (kind of like Manzel years later), and due to my Arabian vacation I had missed a lot of the 1990 college football season . My disappointment was great when I read how he had not played as well as he had in 89. Still he had the arm and the guts so I was a little sad when he went to the Falcons. I was on a plane back from the Gulf when his selection was announced and focused on how V Clark would improve the defense. To make along story short I was happy when they traded for him (the drinking and craziness at practice was unknown to fans of that era) but I was puzzled in that they could have drafted him at 19 (Clarks 1st season in GB had not been impressive) and saved themselves a draft pick.

It's almost like they didn't have anything to lose, like a 1st ballot HOFer at QB playing at HOF MVP levels.

If Ron Wolf was the Packers GM in 1991 there's no doubt he would have drafted Favre.
Tom Braatz was no Ron Wolf. He was barely a Mike Sherman.
I was less than thrilled when Braatz was hired, based on his time in Atlanta.
Looking back through the drafts during his years in Green Bay, he made good picks in Rounds 1-4, but totally whiffed through subsequent rounds.
1987 got us Brent Fullwood (1st), Johnny Holland (2nd), a LB named Scott Stephen (2nd of 3 3rd round picks) that lasted 6 years, and a rare hit in the 10th round (Majik).
1988 was Sharpe (1st), Shawn Patterson (2nd), Keith Woodside (3rd), and Chuck Cecil (2nd of 2 4th round picks).
1989 Mandarich (1st), Matt Brock (1st of 2 3rd round picks), Jeff Query (5th), the immortal Vince "Pookie" Workman (2nd of 2 5th round picks), and Chris Jacke (6th). Incidentally, the 2nd 3rd round pick was spent on Anthony Dilweg, and a 4th round pick was some QB named Jeff Graham.
1990 Tony Bennett (1st of 2 1st round picks), Darrell Thompson (2nd 1st round pick), Leroy Butler (2nd), Bobby Houston (3rd), Jackie Harris (4th), Charles Wilson (5th), Bryce Paup (6th), and Lester Archambeau (7th).
1991 Vinnie Clark (1st), Esera Tuaolo (2nd), and Don Davey (1st of 2 3rd round picks). That's it out of 12 rounds.
