EI think we all thought they’d be better with the new staff and complimentary pieces. Just a competent coach gets them further than in previous years. But they’re on pace for 57 wins, which would be a monumental achievement.

But what I didn’t expect is the way other teams are struggling in the process. In the West, Denver tops all teams with the best record. Houston stumbled badly out of the gate. Golden State seems to have lost their edge, at least at this point of the season. They’ve been blown out at Oracle more times this year than in several years combined. Now granted, GS still is #2 in their conference, but they’ve shown to be quite disinterested to start the season.

Meanwhile the East has Milwaukee, Toronto, and Indiana at the top- no Boston, no Philly. Boston took 2 months to figure out a rotation that works, and still they’re only just finding their stride. Philly needed to trade for Butler to get their motor running. They seem fragile psychologically, as Embiid has struggled to adjust to having a third, bona fide star.

And for all this talk of Anthony Davis as an MVP, they’re 4 games under and have lost games to the Spurs, Wizards, Miami... all very bad teams. And with Lebron engaging earlier this season just to get them over .500, it’s tough to say what will be left come April.

It is fantastic that the Bucks will finish the calendar year at the top of the EC, and the league’s best winning %. But it only matters in the end... when you’re no longer the hunter, but the hunted.

The playoffs will come down to two things.

1. Whether Middleton, Bledsoe, Lopez, Brogdon, etc. hit open 3s that will result from teams loading up the middle to stop Giannis.

2. Whether DJ Wilson and Maker can play well enough on offense so they can get big minutes against Ibaka, Horford, and Myles Turner in what will hopefully be rounds 2 and 3. Lopez struggles to guard those guys after helping inside and Wilson and Maker can match up better.

If #1 happens, the Bucks can beat anyone. If they have a few 6-45 duds in the playoffs and Middleton goes cold for a long stretch, then they are vulnerable even in the first round.

I don’t think the rotations are set to the Spring. I cannot imagine Christian Wood toiling all season putting up Shaq numbers in the G league. But he’s a young, inexperienced player. Look at the G rotations... we got a good look at Connaughton and DiVincenzo early, and they were out-playing even Brogdon at times.

Now we are not seeing either, and instead Brogdon has stepped forward and they traded for George Hill.

Budenholzer was not yet ready to allow these younger players play all season. And DJW has taken advantage of Ilyasova’a broken nose to really solidify himself in the rotation, but I doubt Budenholzer is inclined to leave him on the bench in favor of this new development in Wilson.

Adding George Hill was a brilliant move as he gives them a solid veteran presence and a backup to Bledsoe if he falters. The guy is starter quality that will help them and the best part is he can walk after the season and they recover 17MM.

DJ Wilson and Sterling Brown are now showing what they can do as important contributors.   The jury is out on Thon Maker.
