Fake FG.

I read that too and find it amazing. Fans tend to rip coaches when stuff doesn't work but just think how calculated some of these plays are. Working on it for 2-3 years before you find the right spot to call it? Unreal...
I don't get the amazement with that.
I'd bet there are a lot of plays in the playbook that don't get called for years. And I bet they have several fake FG plays in the playbook. How often do you get in the situation where you want to call a fake FG? Once per year, maybe twice? If you have 3 or 4 different fake FG plays, you aren't going to get to them all very often.
If the coaches saw something on film where it looked like the Bears would be susceptible to that fake, they take a minute during the practice week and say "remember that old fake FG play XYZ, lets practice that a couple time because we might run it this week".
I am sure there are hook and lateral plays and hail mary plays and other non traditional plays that are worked on but never actually called for years.

Yeah, but how many would try a fake field goal on 4th-and-26? Every team has a hook-and-ladder or a hail mary for when they're down, and everyone knows what's coming. Trying a hook-and-ladder in the middle of the second quarter would probably have a better chance of success than at the very end of a game/half. Trying a fake field goal on 4th-and-26 takes balls because no one would ever think to do it.
And the players thought it was pretty big deal. Their quotes afterwards were to the effect of, "4th and 26, and we're finally running that one...I guess this is the time then."
Who doesn't have a vision of Chester Marcol running in the blocked kick? Or Raji's TD return against the Bears in the playoffs? I bet this play will be remembered the same way.
"Packers still would have won" is hard to say. If it fails, it can be a real momentum changer.
McCarthy gets huge kudos. It was the absolutely perfect time, not only in terms of surprise, but because the normal stuff wasn't working.

Someone want to implant the replay?
The footage of the Bears sidelines afterwards was priceless.

Crosby knew it was a TD as soon as Mr. Crabs got through the hole. Lovie knew he'd just been punk'd.
GB should have run the same play on the extra point for 2. Talk about not expecting it!

I agree with this. Don't know if it was a momentum changer, but in the season opener against the Bears in 2009, the Bears failed miserably with the fake punt early in the 4th quarter. They were up by 2, and instead of pinning the Packers deep in their own territory, the Pack got it on the Bears 30. Pack couldn't get a first down, but came away with a cheap 3 points to take the lead. At that point in the game, the Packers had 152 yards of total offense. The smart play would've been field position to pin the Packers deep.
By the way, anyone notice the "almost illegal block in the back" by Worthy> Sort of a dumb play on his part because Crabs was already well past the guy Worthy "blocked". Urlacher sees it immediately and looks to the ref to throw a flag.
While I think it was a good no-call because it wouldn't of affected the outcome of the play AT ALL (and was borderline illegal at best), it's not a smart play. He's got to know that.

Saw that and was yelling, "Dumb! Don't give them an opportunity to throw the flag!" You never know what the ref's going to do...
I bet the coaches "talk to" Worthy.
I did cringe when I saw the block. See it a lot on punts too even when it's not called.
For comparison here is a stupid fake attempt... you can even see the ref laughing at it around the 18-19 second mark...

Good breakdown of this play in this week's Peter King MMQB column:

I really liked the playcall. For years we have been watching a Bears team that was running fake punts and fake FGs to try and get that edge on the Packers. In the last decade the Bears have run some fake against us seemingly every other year or so. I like that we hit them back with it. We needed to show that we care about beating the Bears as much as they care about beating us.

Pack hasn't lost to the Bears since September of 2010. Five straight wins, including four in 2011.
Good analysis by King. It's even easier to see now just how much had to go right and how precisely everyone had to do their jobs. Cool insight. Good thing Slocum refined Crosby's role!
Masthay named NFC Special Teams POW
Glad we finally have a stable, reliable Punter. I have been very impressed with his first 2 games this year. His average may not be incredible, but he's hit long ones he's needed to and he's pinned the other team inside the 20 when he's needed to (Tied for #1 in the NFL in Punts Inside the 20 with 7).
Also thought this was an awesome thing:
