Ted Williams was the best Moneyball stats player in history, and he's probably grossly underrated as an all-time great.

He missed almost 5 years of his prime to serve in WW2 and then Korea.

He missed 3 seasons in WW2. The year before he had an OPS Of 1.147 with 36 HRs and 137 RBIs. The year after he had an OPS of 1.164 with 38 HR and 123 RBIs.

He missed most of 2 seasons for Korea. The year before he had 1.019, 30 HR/126 RBI. The year after he went for 1.189 and 29/89.

He already has superstar HOF career stats. If you give him the average for the 5 seasons he missed of the years before and after his service, he had roughly an additional 700 hits, 700 BBs, 150 HRs and 600 RBIS. His career totals would have been

3300 hits, 2700 BBs, 670 HRs, and 2539 RBIs. His whole career was Barry Bonds level statistics without the PEDs.

Not sure that he  is grossly underrated.  Just a quick glance at a few ranking sites and they have him in the top 5.

Just a point for discussion. But it's just my sense that he doesn't get talked about as much as Ruth, Mantle, Mays, Aaron. Maybe I'm just conditioned to be sensitive to it because he was my father's favorite player.

I saw an American Masters recently on PBS, he was a hellava ballplayer and a hellava fisherman but a generally miserable man.  IMO.

And just like GOAT QB discussion we all have, all it really matters is that you are in that discussion.  Eras, training methods, modern meds,  which team and coach you are with and other variables come into play.

Teddy Ballgame didn't get the press because, well, he hated the press.  His legendary spitting towards the press box did him in.  And they treated him very unfairly during his only World Series appearance.  He was also very bitter being called up for both WWII and Korea.   Very few other ball players had to serve in both. He lost 5 1/2 years in the prime of his career to military service and thought the press should have done more to try and keep him from serving twice.
