Looks like a big one is going down today as ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the 49ers have traded QB Alex Smith to Kansas City.

Rumor has it for a 2nd & possibly ANOTHER pick.

Andy Reid has lost his friggin mind

Not a good move for KC. AS is average, game manager type. A better risk would have been to use those picks to move up another pick into the first round, use one of the first round picks to take a QB. Cheaper and more upside.
I agree with the previous poster except Reid seems determined to make a splash and face it the AFC worst (in spite of Denver) is terrible and KC has a lot of offensive talent. I could see a worst to 1st there and Reid looks like a genius.
Smith put up some darn good numbers for the Niners since Harbaugh took over. And that was in a conservative system (at least when he was under center). Should be interesting to see what he can do under Reid.
Smith won't have the luxury of a world class defense & world class running game protecting him.

He'll have a lot more on his shoulders & he'll crumble. Wait & see or should I say...

Time will tell.....
Not just a second-round pick. The 34th pick in the draft.

I'm floored. Since SF would have had to release him, this suggests there were equally competitive offers on the table for Smith. (Or some really good bull****ting by SF.)

I could see a desperate team/coach like NYJ taking a shot to win now, but a new GM/Coach with likely as long of a leash as any team in the league? I don't get it. Even in a weak QB class, I've got to think the potential ceiling behind Door #2 is way more exciting that the best Smith is capable of, which is extremely efficient but not game changing. And that's behind the best O-line in 20 years with some serious talent at the "playmaker" positions.
I become increasingly pissed off TT didn't get more for Favre. The only good thing is he used that pick to get Clay.

Fuggin pissed! Why can't the Packers EVER get that kind of a deal?

Just for fun, I looked up the stats from last season. SF was fourth in the league in team rushing...KC was 5...

the link never lies...

Defense, well, a different story...

They certainly fleeced Cleveland with the Corey Williams deal. Seemed to really fleece New England with the CM3 deal. The deal for Favre could have been better if the Jets didn't suck so bad...had they made the playoffs it would have gone up to a 2nd I think.

You know TOG was on his last legs. Hell, after the trade was made he may have decided to retire again. I think the Packers were lucky to get what they did for him.

If only Matt Flynn had played more they may have gotten what San Fran got for Smith.
I think San Fran had something like 12 picks before that trade. Now it might be like 13 or more. They have a chance to keep themselves very strong for a number of years if they play their cards right.

It wouldn't shock me if they use some of those picks and make the trade for Revis. They could get rid of a #1 and #2 and still have 10 or more picks. Let's just hope they strike out on all of them. Smiler
This appears to be a very good draft to have a lot of picks if you don't need a franchise QB. KC gave up a good deal to get Smith, they'd better hope he plays better than Matt Cassel did. Now, where does Nick Foles go?
I don't want to allow Favre to continue to hijack this thread, but I think the trade value was likely hurt by TT's strong preference to get him in the AFC, and maybe even out of the AFC South who I believe they played that first year.

I don't think the circus of having Favre play at Lambeau in another uniform that season would have been worth 2 first rounders to Ted.
I should have elaborated more. Time of year was a factor as it was August (close to the season). I also view the two situations as COMPLETELY different. Smith already was second string and by all means was a good teammate about it. He could have come back next year as the backup (although that never would have happened). There was no way Favre could have come back and stepped foot into that locker room as a second stringer.

He was going to play again and that was impossible with the Packers. Hence the bounty received.
I don't understand giving up that high of a draft pick for a "game manager" QB. I don't mean that in a bad way...but I think a guy could be drafted with the #34 pick that could live up to "game manager" status...and who knows, maybe with development he could turn into something more. Alex Smith's ceiling has already been hit.
He was clearly having his best year as a pro last season when he got concussed. On track for about 22 TD and 9 Ints with a QB rating around 105. Would have been his first season with more than 20 TDs.
The Flynn comments do raise an interesting question – does Dorsey join Philbin as the second former Packer insider to pass on Flynn at QB? Flynn’s contract is actually about $5M cheaper over the next two years, and I have to think SEA would have pounced at KC’s 3rd or even 4th for him.

I guess Schneider technically makes old Packer guys 1 for 3…
Seems like a pretty steep price for a game manager but Reid apparently is in love with the guy. KC said all the right things when they hired Dorsey, but I do have to wonder where the personnel power lies in the organization.

IIRC, TT got seemingly something for nothing when he traded Jamon Meredith, and one other OL...maybe Barbie? or Giacomini?
I hate to over-simplify things, especially speculation, but I can't help but think Reid envisions building his team similar to the Ravens, and sees Smith in Flacco's role. Ordinarily, we'd laugh and dismiss such thoughts, but Trent Dilfer won a SB fer cryin' out loud!

I'll go with the 'price too steep' vote; moreso considering you would think a new coach/GM combo would want to have as many pics as possible, as well as the cap room that's bound to be lost with this deal.
Reid/Smith may be stumbling into a great situation. Many "pundits" had KC as a playoff team last season. Obviously they were horrible but I do suspect the talent level isn't at the 2-win level.

They also play in a crappy division.

Playoffs for the Chiefs next season! Mark it down!
On paper it seems like a lot to give up. However, it's a weak QB draft class and KC still has a high 1st round pick that they could use to trade back into the Top 10 and get that 2nd rounder back.

The Chiefs need a guy at QB who won't turn the ball over and Smith does just that. They also have a pretty decent run game so he likely won't be expected to come in and throw 300 yards every game.

In reality, that team has some talent and they really upgraded the HC and GM spots so I don't think it would take much effort to double or triple their win total from last season.
This is a horrible draft if you need a Quarterback but otherwise looks really strong. However, at the top there's also not a marquee guy or two teams will have to jump for so I doubt KC moves the #1. If a team needs a Left Tackle, for example, there's no need to jump to #1 with Fisher and Johnson on the board also.
