Nice pictures. My wife and I made three visits to Alcatraz over the years and had an ex-convict as a tour guide the first time; an ex-guard the second; and the last time it was automated on a hand held recorder.

By far the ex-con was the most interesting and he was great with his insight. An entirely different perspective from the guard.

As you would expect, the automated version was informative, but not very responsive to questions.

I went inside the solatary confinement cell and when they closed the door, it was totally black. The ex-con gave a vivid description of what it was like from his personal experience.

A must see for anyone visiting in the SF area.

What did you think of the hot air balloon ride? I've always thought that would be a cool thing.

Glad you had such a nice trip!

No, we cruised for our honeymoon.

Neither of us are that fond of heights, other than in an airplane, but we loved the balloon ride. You become the wind, so there is little movement (turbulence) once you launch. Because of fog in the Napa Valley, we had to load up and travel 45 minutes to the Central Valley, so instead of flying over vineyards, we flew over agricultural land. It was beautiful.

PA, no, I think we joined the 1,000 ft club. The company we flew with has the largest balloons in the valley. The basket holds 16 passengers, plus the pilot, so is quite heavy and doesn't attain as much height as the others that carry 10 - 12. Our pilot's personal best is either 32,500 or 35,200 (can't remember which) and of course, that would be by himself most likely. He has been flying since 1982, and coincidentally, is from Butternut, Wisconsin, where my first wife and I honeymooned!!!

As we waited (in the field) for the chase vehicles to catch up to us and gain access to the field, the wind was coming up, and we were lucky enough to experience tipping the basket on its side when the mounting winds took hold of the balloon. Michael had to shoot some more air into the balloon to get us upright and stable. It was pretty cool.

Ferrari, no we didn't play, but it was a beautiful day for a game when we were there. Little wind, lots of sun. . . lots of rich guys teeing off. I think our tour guide told us he thought it was $400 or $500 per round. Do you know for sure?

Old Navy, we hit 13 on the 15th (day of the flight). Congrats to you and Louise also.

MN the story we were told was that they "hauled out" on Pier 39's K-Dock shortly after the earthquake of 1989 (Jan of 90). Originally there were 10 - 50 of them but it soon grew to more than 300 in a couple of months. Grows to as many as 900 in winter season, and a small group of them live at Pier 39 year round. They are really funny to watch. (as long as the wind isn't blowing in your face) toobad
Nice pictures. Anyone that has not been to San Francisco should really try and make a trip sometime in their life. There is so much to do. I think I had clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl everyday I was there, except for the two nights we spent in Napa and at Safari West.

Did you do any wine tasting in Napa? My wife and I absolutely loved the Napa wines as opposed to Sonoma.

I had a GREAT bowl of clam chowder at ther Crab Shack, but it wasn't in a sourdough bowl.

As to the wine tasting, I don't drink, but Mrs Hauser did some wine tasting of a few Napa Valley wines from the wineraries of Earnest & Julio. (the girl said they were Napa wines anyway). I tasted the cheese and fruit

My cousin lives in Napa and gave us the tour of the valley up one side to Calistoga, where he used to run the hardware store, and back down the other side of the valley. We will probably go back to visit him so it won't cost us for a place to stay, and then we can do some touring of both Napa Valley & Sonoma. Our planned winery tour was screwed up by the 1.5 hr (45 minute one way) trip to Central Valley for the balloon ride. Mother nature's fault!!

It's still $350 and there was no extra charge for the three balls I hit in the Ocean.

Well, that balloon sounds a little crowded for the 3000 ft club that I was talking about.

So, how does a balloon ride work exactly? Do you park where you take off? And, since you're at the mercy of the winds, where do you land, and how do you get back?

Air brakes. Razzer

Funny how a dredge of society can become a celebrity just because he was locked up in a legend. (I mean the ex-con, not Mrs. Hauser Big Grin )

Great pics ol' Hauserdude!!!!

Took in basically the same things you did, about 7 years ago.

Great time and I'd do it again.

But if you were at the Wharf, how come there's NO PIC of the Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory nearby??

Plus you get some FREE samples and you know how happy that would make Quiet One if you sent her some.

OK Tuna, check it out now. More pics. We also had the Famous Ghiradelli Hot Fudget Sundae

Yes Cal, it was everything we expected & more. Great time. And yes, we did get your surprise! You shouldn't have. (I sent you an email)

I took about 480 pictures all together. My photography doesn't match yours, but if you'd like, I can send you a CD of them. Just let me know.

Congrats to you and Mrs Cal too. We'll be waiting for pics of your trip now
