He was one of my fave players from back then in the 90s. But then injuries cut short his career.

I am surprised the article did not mention his brief coaching career in La Crosse...I think it was with their arena team. Then I remember reading about him getting busted for drugs and I was really disappointed in him.

Now after reading this story, I understand it was a much bigger issue with drugs than simply being a "user".

I hope he does well and keeps things headed in the right direction.

ps. Liked the part where they said "he shut-up Irvin" by pasting him good in a game.
Newsome was one of my favorite players on those teams. Tough as nails. Hope he is able to stay on the right path.

I found this interesting:

"You'd get on the plane and they're handing out beer and pills," Newsome said. "It's like, 'OK, party time.' Really. Every player that is either asking for them or says, 'This is hurting.' It's like 'OK, here's a bag of them.' "

I'd like to think this has changed a bit through the years.
True story.

I was at the Monday Night game against Chicago the night he blew out his knee. I was bummed because that afternoon I had just purchased his jersey.

Anyway, Tuesday morning, we head down to the Reggie White pro shop to do some browsing. And who walks in the door? Craig Newsome and a couple of his buds.
So he comes thru the store towards us, hobbling on crutches. He gets to us and does a double take when he sees my jersey. He got a half-grin and said something to the effect of not being used to seeing people wear his jersey. Then he jokingly said "I suppose you want an autograph?" I told him he didn't have to bother because of the injury downer. He said it wasn't a problem, and signed the back of it. We chatted a couple of more minuets, then we left.

Seems like a great person who made a poor choice. Nice to see him getting his life back together.

Will never forget the fumble and return for TD in the SF playoff game. Physical play that set the tone of one of the best defensive games the Pack has played in my lifetime.

Yes, I saw that pic too. Wonder what the connection is...Did they play in the NFL at the same time?
I remember when he was drafted. Many people thought he was too slow to play corner, but he came in as a rookie and started and was well on his way to becoming an All-Pro DB and then blows out his knee. It's not as bad as Nick Collins' situation but it's close.

The NFL is littered with Craig Newsome's- guys that had their careers cut short due to injury.
