I think it reduces to the idea that a nice scheme + a lot of dedicated players that commit to the scheme is not enough.
To be able to compete at the higher levels, you need some threshold of being able to create your own shot.
Wisconsin is well below that threshold and generally is.
+1 Hauser
As it is every year, G play is a major factor. Josh Gasser and Ben Brust, with Traevon Jackson off the bench, were supposed to be your key G rotation. Without Gasser, they were left giving significant minutes to a guy (Marshall) that was a liability. Early in the season, I as impressed with GM. But as the season wore on, he wilted under the pressure and exposed why he wasn't originally in the big plans. Step up on him just a little bit, and he panics and becaome a walking TO.
So to me it matters les that the Badgers are losing Berggren, Evans, and Bruiser. They can get by without them, as they have a number of guys that can step in and play D and get boards. That's the constant for a Bo Ryan team. But what they need is for their Gs to play better. Much better. If they can get a lot out if Gasser, Brust, and Jackson they will make Dekker more dangerous.
I predict they will be a better offensive club next year based on that. I know, they couldn't be much worse than this year, but the fear that they'll be worse next year to me is off target. They'll be a lot better when Gasser returns.

Has any reason come out as to why the 7 footer from Germantown picked Indiana over Wisconsin?
Why do people think Gasser is going to make a difference? He and Brust and Jackson are about the same.
They need an elite guard or guards to truly improve as a program. I don't know why this is so difficult because it doesn't seem like they have any issues getting decent big men.

Gasser was an elite defender and a consistant shooter.

As I understand the Badgers never really recruited Fischer too hard...part of the reason, I think, is that Fischer's parents were pretty good friends of Tom Crean during his time at Marquette. That's what I've heard, I can't vouch for how true it is.
The Badgers do have two good looking big men coming in next year (Vito Brown and Nigel Hayes_ but neither is the size of Fischer.
Both play big though. Both are shot blockers and rebounders, and Brown has some mod range game to him.
Gasser gets you 6 or 7 PPG.
They need a guy that can fill the hoop. Could have been the guy that ripped out Butler's heart with 25+
And yes I will keep harping about it. The Badgers had their elite guard in Blue and you see what he can do.

It's something to me that the team in Florida that beat Georgetown is WAY more athletic than UW, but I suppose Florida is a hotbed of talent.
But, there are certain teams that have that talent and if they can, why not UW? Wichita State comes to mind for me. What the heck is in Wichita? Now, I just saw some kid for Iowa State shoot over a Buckeye defender with a nice low post shot. UW has no one like that. What is in Iowa for talent? If Iowa State and Wichita State can do it, why can't Bucky?
Ryan doesn't avoid these kind of players, does he?

I have no idea
Bo and UW have recruited and developed a number of good big men but it's the backcourt guys they can't seem to find (for whatever reason). Personally, I think some guys get scared off by the Badgers style of play and they want to go elsewhere.
All I know is that for this team to make the next step they have to find better guards

Here is a couple of articles on why VB may have decommited:

Wes Matthews used the message board thing to convince Blue he was making a mistake? And it worked? LOL!!! That's hilarious. That sure isn't Bo Ryan's fault.
It comes down to this- 2013-2016 is Bo Ryan's window to a Final Four. His best recruit ever with his best class. Give he man talent and they'll be elite. The last time the Badgers landed big recruits like this, he won 30 games by the time that last good class was juniors.

I agree with this. Also, the man is 65. May be his last run anyway.
I actually think their guard play will be ok next year. There are no stars but Jackson, Gasser, Brust, and Marshall are a good core and Dekker gives them a great SF and will be the go to guy at the end of the shot clock.
I think the concern next year is post defense. Bruesewitz, Berggren, and Evans had major offensive limitations but they were strong defensive players. Kaminsky may be Ok but who else will get the minutes at the 4 and 5 positions? Is Anderson going to be serviceable?

Before he graduates at Madison, Bronson Koenig will be considered one, if not the, best of UW's point guards ever
If that turns out to be true, then Bo Ryan will have his shot at a Final Four.
I see vitto brown and nigel hayes getting some time next season with UW. Youre right, outside of Kaminsky at the 4 I dont know if we have anything worth a damn on that bench right now in the realm of the bigs.
Dekker should eat up about 35 mins / game at the 3.
Dont count out Koenig in the guard rotation. He did get offers from Duke / UNC /Kansas. He is special.
I can see them running small next season

WOW!!! Nothing like putting the cart in front of the horse. I have seen Koenig play a number of times over the past three years. He is good, no doubt, and deserved his scholly to Wisconsin. But to say he will be one of the best PG ever......waaayyy too soon. My guess....he wont be as good as Devin Harris and I hope he will be as good as Jordan Taylor.

The Badgers had an 8 man rotation this year and if you include Gasser have 6 guys who got significant minutes coming back.
Brust 6'1"
Marshall 5'11"
Jackson 6'2"
Gasser 6'3"
Dekker 6'7"
Kaminsky 6'11"
Koenig is 6'2"
The guy who got the next most minutes was Zach Showalter who is also 6'2".
I don't know much about Hayes or Brown, but they are both around 6'8" so they may have to play by default. Maybe Bohannon (6'6") or Evan Anderson (7') can improve and get some of the minutes, but what we saw this year would suggest it would be best not to count on that.
This is why the Uthoff transfer could hurt. He was probably slated to be the next Bruesewitz/Krabbenhoff type who was a PF type (6'7")would play tough D and rebound and basically be a glue guy.
Hopin EAnderson comes back as that "surprise" guy that Bo always seems to pull from no where from the year before. He has to take some pretty big strides but all they really need out of him is defense&rebounding. He gets a little better footwork and he'll be OK because he has the body.
