Colin Rea has a 3 hitter after 5, he's pitching pretty good tonight. And, only like 58 or so pitches so far.

If Rea can pitch like this in the playoffs, and make no mistake, the Brewers are making the playoffs one way or another.   But if can pitch like this then the Brewers have a punchers chance to advance , more than once.

(Beat you on the Contreras double.)

I don't see him being the type of #1 starter you need in the playoffs. Unlike previous years with Burnes and Woodruff, I don't see opposing teams being scared a series with the Brewers because they may have to face Rea twice.

I wonder if they'd have known they would be this good into mid-August, that they'd have made the Burnes trade? I doubt it.  I would trade Ortiz and DL Hall 100 times out of 100 for 3 months of Burnes at the deadline if I had the choice. It would be like the Sabathia trade in 2008. But the Brewers basically did the opposite before the season started.

I think they thought they'd regress this year and traded Burnes early to get more value. As I've said before, it doesn't make sense to keep Adames and lose him for nothing yet trade Burnes. You are either all in or not.

And I think that you are rong, not that there is anything rong with that.  Rea's body of work though out the season is showing he can be a #1 starter. He's better than Freddie, that is for sure.   Atlanta is showing they are very beatable. If you would have told me the Brewers would have 3 more wins than the Braves in early August I would have said you are crazy.  Same if you had told me the Brewers would have a better road record than the Dodgers and the Phillies.  The way the Phillies are playing as of late, well there is no dominate team in the NL right now.

Sure, Burnes has a very good record right now, but remember, he is pitching against a bunch of AL players who have never seen him before. If he was facing NL hitters who have batted against him for a few years his record might be different.   You talk about getting nothing for Dames if you keep him for this entire season, well wouldn't the same thing have happened if you kept Burnes for the 2024 season?  You can't have it both ways.

I'll never understand the MLB blackout rules. In Iowa there's six teams (SIX!!) that the blackout rule applies to. Some of these teams are like six hours away. Local market?!?

If MLB was a brand new league and your goal was to not grow in popularity this would be a key part of the strategy.

Yep. I subscribed to MLB last year. When I found out the 1st Brewer game which was on the road was being blacked out I called them to see why.  I was told I was in the home Brewer area so I would be able to watch any games. Not only the Brewers but Cubs, White Sox, Twins, Cards, and Royals. They did give me my money back so there is that.

I was just saying why keep Adames for the whole year and get nothing in return, but not do the same with Burnes? Ortiz may be a major plus player in a few years, but he's just another guy this year (1.7 WAR).

In 2008, the Brewers had a chance and went for it giving away a very good prospect in LaPorta for 3 months of Sabathia. This year, the Brewers received a decent prospect (Ortiz) and DL Hall for a whole year of Burnes to allow the Orioles to have a serious go at going deep in the playoffs.

My point was that you'd have a much better chance of advancing in the playoffs with Burnes as your #1 starter than what Ortiz and Hall are going to give you this year.
