It's only two games, but there has to be a concern that Burnes has continued to be bothered by the salary arbitration hearing and it's affecting his performance.

I think he puts that behind him when he's on the mound. His command has been terrible in both starts. A bunch of BBs and a couple HBPs but he's making mistakes inside the strike zone that are getting hit. He needs his cutter or else he's just another guy.

Back in August the Brewer front office were the assholes of baseball.  But just look at what they have put together, at least so far this season.

Not only that but they salvaged the Hader trade by sending Ruiz the the As and getting two pitchers plus Contreras. They were going to lose Hader at some point and to get a catcher that could be there 10 years is quite the recovery. Plus Gasser is a decent LH pitcher at Nashville.

Cain came up with the Brewers in 2010. So that's 13 years since the farm system produced a decent position player. I know the emphasis has been on drafting and developing pitchers but that's quite a dry spell. Even the traded prospects haven't done well over that time. Brantley would be an exception.

And before that, it seemed like there was a decades-long window where the farm system produced position players, but almost no elite pitchers. I want to say that from about 1980 to 2018, the only guys that reached the level of a #1 or #2 starting pitcher the Brewers' farm system produced were Teddy Higuera, Ben Sheets, Chris Bosio, Gallardo, and Cal Eldred.  You had some back of the rotation type starters (Navarro, Wegman, etc.), but they never had enough pitching to compete consistently.

Now, it appears to be flipping back to producing position players. I hope they can still develop some decent pitching to go with it.

On my lunch break, I looked at the First Round picks the Brewers have made in their history. I know it's not all first round picks that make the majors, but it gives you a good snapshot.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...st-round_draft_picks

They've taken 27 pitchers with a 1st round pick. The hits would be Sheets, Dan Plesac, Alex Fernandez (didn't sign with them), and Cal Eldred. The other decent guys were Jeffress, Odorozzi, and D'Amico. The other 20 guys either never made the majors or didn't pitch more than a handful of games there. Ben Sheets was the only superstar of the 27. He was a borderline HOF-level guy for about 5-6 years that got stuck pitching on shitty teams and being sent out there for 220-230 innings a year until his arm fell off.

The Brewers have taken 40 position players with a first round pick. Molitor and Yount are in the HOF. Sheffield has case to be inducted. Ryan Braun and Fielder were perennial all-stars. They also chose a bunch of really good players and contributors: Gorman Thomas, Dale Sveum, Darrell Porter, BJ Surhoff, Bill Spiers, Geoff Jenkins, Rickie Weeks. So, 12 of the 40 would be considered good to great choices.

It just shows how much of crapshoot the MLB draft is. One could argue that the Brewers have not gotten a good player out of the first round since Braun was chosen in 2005 (maybe you could argue Jeffress in 2006). Hopefully, Mitchell, Turang, etc. reverse that trend, but that list is pretty sad in the last 17 years.
