not trying to up my meager post count.... just to lazy to rewrite it all in a different format....

I can live with this as it would mean that Newhouse is the backup for both.

not often you have a backup that was actually a "seviceable" starter.

count me as one that thinks Barclay will end up stabilizing the RT spot for the next few years...

somehow reminds me of Tauscher...
I do agree Satori that the data doesn't reflect that Barclay was really an improvement, but to me he was a big improvement. The intangibles he possesses make me think he's more of a Mark Tauscher type. There's no reason why Tauscher should have been as successful as he was...he was a little short, he was too stocky, he wasn't an "elite athlete" numbers wise, but he got the job done for almost a decade. That's the kind of player I see Barclay as. He plays with a ton of energy and effort, you can win with guys like that. Once he learns the nuances of the position, starts learning tendencies, I think he will be a quality player.

The same can be said for Bulaga really. When he's healthy he simply gets the job done. I think Bulaga/Barlcay is a stronger line than Newhouse/Bulaga, both in the run and the pass. And honestly, if I had to choose whether to be weaker at LT or RT, I'd choose RT. I want the better player on Rodgers blindside.
Barclay was so impressive cause he jumps in with no pro experience, undrafted free agent, and proves to be a road grader in the run game and does ok in pass pro(All things considered).

He was known to be very intense at WV. The guy has a bad body, like Tausch, and sticks like glue till the whistle.

I have little doubt that Campen will turn him into a bum in no time Smiler

If there's any way in hell that Sherrod can play, there are all kinds of great options on the oline. Lang at center and Barclay at guard !!! Eeker
Campen made similar comments about Derek

Here is TT at the combine in 2013:

Thompson said that the Packers anticipate both Bryan Bulaga (hip) and Derek Sherrod (knee) to be ready for action this coming season.

"We’re expecting them back," Thompson said. "I don’t really have any injury updates at this point, because the off-season is the off-season. But we expect those guys to be able to come back and play."

And here is a snippet talking about his play vs Atlanta, when Clifton got hurt

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/131526588.html

"But behind the scenes, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said the rookie was making progress. Sherrod was no longer riding the guard/tackle carousel at practice.

Sunday in Atlanta was everyone's first true look at Green Bay's top pick. He exceeded expectations."
I think best case scenario is definitely that Sherrod comes back 100% and takes over at LT and plays at a high level while Bulaga holds down RT. That's the ideal scenario and was the intention when Sherrod was drafted. I'm not usually a pessimist, but I'm not holding my breath on Sherrod honestly. How he responds will tell us where his career is going. If he's 100% ready and wins the LT spot in training camp then IMO it will show he has the right attitude to have a successful career...his commitment level, how motivated he is, etc. If he comes back and looks rough for a while or has more delays then IMO it will show that he's more Justin Harrell than Mike Flanagan.

I'm calling BS on this one

"It remains to be seen whether Sherrod, who spent the entire season on PUP, will make it back for Green Bay's offseason program. "I expect him to be back and competing for a spot," OL coach James Campen said. "He was just on the cusp of doing some very good things when he got hurt. We expect him to be back and ready to go."

On top of that, MM commented this week at the owners meeting about how hard Derek is working in the weight room and his rehab. Head Coach was very impressed with his effort - yet you are questioning it GD. Why ?

So we know he has the skill-set, we know he has the experience at LT, we know he has the motivation to work hard and we know he has the build to play the position

Draft and Develop sometimes means being patient, yet you state that if he doesn't do everything exactly perfect starting in TC, he's more Bustin than Flanagan

That's absurd and you know better

Last year Mike Neal was Bustin II, this year its Sherrod.

sometimes "you people" make me wanna scream Big Grin

What are you calling BS on? My pessimism is not about him being Justin Harrell, it's more about coming back to 100% and being a successful pro after such a bad injury. And I didn't say he was Justin Harrell, but how he responds after all the time he's had to rehab will tell us whether he's more Mike Flanagan or more Justin Harrell. I don't see what's wrong with saying that? He's been rehabbing for what, 15 months? In that time I hope he's been studying the playbook, watching film, getting stronger, etc. If the coaches say that he's doing that then that's wonderful, I'm glad he's getting it done. That should mean all he has to do is shake the rust off and go. If he struggles badly or looks unprepared or has major setbacks, how is it not fair to question his work ethic after such an extended time off? That's not to say he's been perfect, I'm perfectly willing to be patient with him. He will have to shake off some rust and he will struggle a little early on, but if he plays like garbage in the 3rd or 4th preseason game, again why is it not fair to question his work ethic? I'm not calling him a bust, not at all, I'm just saying that his return from injury will tell us a lot about him. As you point out, all indications from the coaches are positive, but his play will truly tell the story.

Able to return from the injury is different than how he has responded. One is medical/physical and one is mental/character/heart.

Indications are he is not Harrell... Justin had a lot of quit in him and Sherrod by all reports does not. Will he heal to the point to where his body is in line with his mind/heart is the question.
Derek ain't no Justin. If he can't play it won't be because he didn't give it his all.

β€œI don’t think so with him. I don’t think so with a kid like him,” Campen said. β€œYou’re dealing with a guy who played in the SEC, a high level of football and the character of that kid. He’s doing everything he can to get on the field and he’s a smart, intelligent guy. He’s not a mental error guy. He holds himself accountable. He’s an excellent teammate. He doesn’t like to disappoint. Once he’s cleared, I think he’ll be off and running.”

"You're never going to find anybody go through a walk-through who works on technique as much as he does," said Mullen. "He does his job every day, every practice, at every meeting. We use him as an example for all our younger guys - this is how you have to do it if you want to be great."
