Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers is converting a portion of his salary into Bitcoin.

The three-time MVP said he's also giving away $1 million worth of the digital currency.
Rodgers is earning $1.1 million in base salary for the 2021 season and collected more than $23.1 million from a pair of bonuses.

The 37-year-old is joining the trend of athletes looking to dip their toes into the crypto market.

Two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Russell Okung was a relatively early adopter, tweeting in May 2019 that he wanted to be paid in Bitcoin. In December 2020, Okung worked with the Carolina Panthers to receive half of his $13 million salary in the cryptocurrency.

Moving this out of this forum, because more then likely this will swirl itself right into the shitter as a topic. And because we don't have time to babysit non-football related issues.

I think a lot of people still view crypto as a grift, which I think it certainly can be. The concept is not IMO and certainly blockchain could be game-changing technology, but it all seems very volatile. My understanding is that Rodgers and others aren’t technically paid in Bitcoin, the team send a portion of his salary to a 3rd party that converts the money into bitcoin. I think that’s right? Just like a lot of things, when you have hundreds of millions of dollars Bitcoin seems like a great idea and investment.

So they're asking the team to do the investing for them?  Seems rather pointless.

Definitely volatile but Bitcoin isn't going to disappear off the map anytime soon.  Too many corporations already buying in.  Just a matter of time before it's regulated, which goes against the very principle, but it'll happen.

Yeah, the only way the Packers could pay players in Bitcoin would be to have a large stake in it to work with. Which wouldn't be the worst idea ever as long as you have someone capable managing it.
