I put him right up there with Lombardi and Lambeau in terms of historical significance with the franchise. It got so bad that I began to question if the team would ever be good again.
I put him very high in his impact to the Packers. Before he took over the team I thought there was no way they would ever be good in my lifetime. I am too young to remember the Lombardi years and I thought they would always be wandering around the wilderness of the NFL and never get good again. I remember reading a sports illustrated article about the state of the Packers and they said they may have to relocate to Milwaukee to ever compete etc. All of that changed when Harlan came along and started what we enjoy still today. As a fan of the Packers I will always have gratitude for what he did for us.
For a long time the early 80s were a high point at least until 89 when we didn't even make the play-offs and then, well you know the rest of the story...
I actually had the pleasure of telling him almost verbatim to what Heckler said. I was in Curley's Pub eating before an exhibition game and so was Harlan. I waited until he finished eating and got up the courage to go talk to him and thank him for all he had done for the Packers. No autograph, pictures or anything, just Thank You Mr. Harlan.
