I think the contract to Ashby was a mistake.  Guy just can't work out of jams like a good starter can.   With Freddy and Woody going in the next 2 games we can still get 2 of 3.

5 years and 20 million is not going to hurt them at all. He's only 24 years old and will be at least a serviceable long reliever at worst.

The only guys beyond arbitration (or already extended when arbitration eligible) they have under contract next year are Yelich (26 million), Boxberger (3 million), and Peralta (3.5 million). They either buyout Wong for 2 million or pay him 10 million. I think Wong is gone.

You have to hope Ashby has a Burnes like transformation.   He started out strong then faded big time and then after a good offseason he’s come back and is a dominant pitcher.

Some of us were also ready to shovel dirt on Freddie Peralta and he’s turned into a solid starter.

Ashby has top of the rotation stuff, and he’s still young and can get better.  4M a year is a relative bargain if he becomes the player we think he can be.  Even if he’s a 4 or 5 reliable starter or long reliever with that contract it won’t kill them.

The Brewers are set up for the next few years to have good to great overall pitching.  That’s what is so frustrating about the Hader deal.  They needed a Bell or Gallo or a legitimate hitter to help the lineup come playoff time.  Against good pitching teams there are still too many holes in the lineup.

Split against the Dodgers then lose two in a row against an awful Cubs team.

Goldie may be right.  You cannot give up games to crap teams.

Hader is struggling for sure but yet again Devin Williams shits the bed.  How’s he been since Hader was traded? Pathetic.

Now 4 1/2 behind STL.  Lost 11 of 14.  If they can’t get their shit together quickly this team is done for.  This team has zero mental toughness and resolve.  Face any type of adversity and they collapse like a house of cards.

I feel bad for Counsell.  He deserves a lot better.

As usual you have no idea what you are posting.   Williams total stats in the month of August:

222.459000237.144210309--.1740.95
WLERAGGSCGSHOSVSVOIPHRERHRHBBBIBBKsAVGWHIP

Sure he is 2-2 including today but a .174 opponent average and .95 WHIP are not pathetic as are 3 walks yet 9 strike outs.    Your all things Brewer hatred is so obvious.   Go away.

Lol.  Your tripe is getting old ammo.  Perhaps you can punch a proverbial wall like Williams or stare off into space and lament a change in the workplace like he did.  Poor boy.

They are 6-11 since trading Hader and are in a major funk.  My so called hatred has nothing to do with it.   They are close to circling the drain and your guy Williams isn’t helping matters.

Time for them to either step up and show what they are made of or let STL win the division and possibly miss the playoffs altogether without a fight.  I’m not holding my breath.

Your post had to do with Williams being pathetic.  The stats prove he has not been. He's not been perfect either but certainly not pathetic.  If anyone is spewing tripe around here it is you.  We fans know what the team is doing but we don't need to read some asshole jumping on them when they are down.  It's been a fun season so far, just enjoy whats left.  And take Blair Kiel's advice too.

Williams was obviously bad today, but he's still an all-star level reliever.

For everything else, the biggest problem the Brewers have is that they allocated almost 65 million of their payroll to Yelich, Wong, McCutcheon, Adams, and Cain. The OPS this year for those 5 guys is 731, 728, 736, 738, and 465, respectively. There are 80 guys in the major leagues better than those 5 guys in terms of OPS. They just don't consistently produce enough offense. They were unable to do anything to try to fix that at the trade deadline.

Their best course of action is a complete rebuild. Tank for a couple years, get all of these top prospects up, trade a pitcher or two for bats, and get that Yelich deal off the books, somehow, in a creative trade. I know Attanasio is “poor”, in one of the smallest markets, and cannot afford to pay what the other teams can, so a misfire, such as the Yelich deal is a killer. Being stuck in the middle is the worst place to be. And no, I’m not a Brewer hater. I want to see them be great. I’d LOVE to see Ueck get a WS ring before he leaves us.

The Hader trade was a rare trade that everyone appeared to lose on, at least in the short term. Ruiz and Gasser are the unknowns at this point.

The Brewers replaced Hader with Rogers and got worse. Hader was a big part of their team confidence and swagger. The interviews right after he was dealt, especially with Devin Williams, were as depressing as I've ever seen for a team that makes a deal while they are in first place at the deadline. Trading him compromised their whole identity.

Hader was shellshocked by it as well. He's been terrible since he got there, but these guys are human. He's got a 2 month old infant at home after his wife had a very difficult pregnancy and he's traded 2,000 miles away with no warning.

The Padres are now worse too since Hader can't even close for them anymore.

Maybe Lemet made out better than anyone.

It all depends now on whether Ruiz and Gasser become major contributors, but you have to wonder at this point if everyone involved would like a time machine to go back and just not make this move.

I can't imagine anyone is going to take the Yelich contract off their hands. Maybe you could trade it for a similarly bad contract, but that's it (Anthony Rendon might be the only one I can think of that's worse). He's now three seasons removed from being MVP level and has 5 more years left at 26 million. They don't have a single position player that they can count on being good in the next couple of years.

They could get a big return for 3 players right now - Williams, Burnes, and Woodruff. But after 50 years of looking for pitching and finally getting starting pitching that is good enough to win a title, selling them off would be pretty depressing.

They don't have a single position player that they can count on being good in the next couple of years.

I wouldn't quite say that. Frelick, Truang,  Mitchell and Ruiz are all hitiing .300 or better  at AAA for the month of August.  All are outfielders except Truang can also play SS.   And yes after that the pickings are mighty slim, at least at the AAA level right now.   This includes pitching except for Eathen Small.    So in the immeadiate future trading any starters would be bad. I guess you could trade some of the above mentioned guys or let Renfroe and McCutchen walk after this season if their contracts are up.

Attansanio has to decide if he’s really committed to winning or not.  Or if owning an MLB team is a hobby.

He talks a good game, yet isn’t willing or able to do what it takes to put this team over the top.

My personal belief is Stearns and Counsell are top 5 in the league in terms of their ability and performance.  At some point, the levee will break.

Given the fact they gave up on Hader for peanuts they might as well seek out deals for Woodruff or Burnes now when their value is high.  They sure as shit won’t be extending either of them to long term deals.

The Brewers best shot to win a World Series was in 2018. Yelich was making 7 million a year and went supernova the last two months of the season. The last 37 games of that year he had an OPS of 1313.

They got to Game 7 of the NLCS and might have won a title that year without Jeremy Jeffress picking the worst moment possible to meltdown.

Everything else went right that year. Hader really became Hader. Jeffress was unhittable until that the post-season. They hit the jackpot with Cain in free agency in his first year. Aguilar had a career year. They just didn't have the starting pitching, but Counsell did as good a job managing that year as any Brewer manager in history.

Maybe if Yelich doesn't foul that ball off his kneecap in 2019, they get by the Nationals in that one game playoff?

I think they may have to blow things up and reset, but the Yelich contract is going to make contending difficult if Attanasio doesn't decide to spend more money than he has previously.
