Knight was going to want big money. He's a good complimentary player, but not near a max level which is where his agent was probably going. They've avoided getting into a situation where they end up with the next John Salmons, Desmond Mason type contract.

In essence, they got last year's rookie of the year (MCW) and two spare parts for Brandon Jennings and they get an extra two years before they have to shell out big money for MCW relative to Knight.

I'm guessing Kidd wants a true PG and not someone with a score first mentality, no matter how good.  Instead of a big contract, get a quality player on a rookie contract.  Lost some scoring, but hopefully that can come from OJ, Middleton, Giannis, and eventually Parker.  Plumlee adds depth with the impending loss of Sanders.  Won't be surprised to see some growing pains in the next week or two as MCW adjusts to a new team.  Long term is more important than the difference between a 6 and 8 seed this year.

I think the contract thing was a pretty big factor. You get to see MCW under Kidd's tutelage, and if he improves the way Knight improved under Kidd, you have something worth actually signing to a big contract. Though I liked Knight and what he seems to be doing, I was concerned about what kind of deal he was worth. Max deal? No way. He's is barely an 8 figure player.

Now you have a few years to assess MCW. And by that time, you should have Parker and Antetokoumpo as the big 2. MCW as the 3rd will depend on his shooting- which he's horrible at.

You are short changing the return from Jennings if you don't include Middleton.  IMO, he has been even more of a pleasant surprise this year than Knight has, and I believe a large factor in the reason they let Knight go is they decided Middleton is the one they would prefer to pay and keep.

Wasn't the early knock on Kidd that he couldn't shoot?  He seemed to outlive that shortfall.  Good luck Coach Kidd with this new project!
