It may be time to admit that as a head coach, Chryst is not very good.

I was a huge Chryst fan, especially after the fantastic 2017 season that ended with a Orange Bowl win. They’ve definitely backslid from that high water mark. I would not mind if Jim Leonhard took over the whole operation.

Well, clearly the Badger offense is regressing. Mertz was given the keys to the car, and he crashed it in the ditch. But he’s out there seeing ghosts. He’s having a hard time adjusting to college ball- is it coaching? Is he damaged goods?
And I wonder what’s going on more up front- the Badgers OL simply is not good enough. They’re not running effectively, and aren’t protecting the passer either. Is it complacency? 4 and 5 star guys never really panning out is indicative of some sort of failure- recruiting or coaching.
The OL was very unsettled coming out of camp- maybe because they weren’t very good. In the end, the coach makes the difference. Something is definitely out of character with this Badger team.
If someone had told me before the game that four of Mertz's passes would result in TDs I'd have been pretty happy. Now, not so much.

Weren't you the guy wondering why Chryst was playing Coan when we had a 5 star recruit in Mertz sitting on the bench? You were the #1 Mertz fan. You got what you wished for.

At this point, the entire football program is in question.
Chryst is clearly in a funk and I’m not sure he’s got the chops to run a big time college football team. He’s great as an OC, but he just seems to be totally overmatched against decent teams.
If I’m Jim Leonhard, all I do is crank out top 10 defenses and for what? The offense and to a lesser extent the special teams can’t keep up. He’s a major flight risk if they don’t take care of him.
Then there’s Joe Rudolph. What is with this mediocre OL bullshit? Maybe move Bostad back to be the OL coach. The best OL in team history developed under his watch. I know Rudolph can recruit but WTF.
As for Mertz, this is obviously a situation where the scouts got it wrong on him. He’s a complete liability right now. When you have as many TD throws as turnovers you have major issues. He’s done at Wisconsin. And if he’s not, Chryst may lose his job over it.

Not the defenses fault. The ineptitude of the offense led to the defense being gassed.

Not saying the defense is bad, it has to suck for the defense to be good and no chance of winning with a shit offense.

The defense had 5 sacks and held the Irish to 3 yards rushing.
If I'd have just said that and that the final score would be 41-13 before the game, we'd have all assumed the Badgers won in a route.
The only two touchdowns the defense gave up were after Mertz' turnovers that led to drives of 51 and 46 yards.

After three years in the system, you'd have thought at least his ball handling on fakes and handoffs would be strong. He doesn't even do that well. MIshandling the snap on 1st and goal from the 1 in the Penn State game while pivoting backwards was the worst example, but there have been many.
I see what Mertz is doing and it’s pretty brilliant. If he throws a few more interceptions, then MM and BG will likely trade up for him in the first round.
In basically 10 starts, Graham Mertz has 10 TDs and 11 INTs. I’ve lost track of how many fumbles he’s had. 6-7 sounds about right.
I don’t care how big of an arm you have if you can’t protect the football at that position you won’t win many games.
Michigan is up next week. Oh boy!
This is about the offense.
You look at the recruiting the last 4 years, the fruits of those classes are on the field now. They had to get a RB transfer because they stopped recruiting RBs (apparently) once Taylor was on the roster starting in 2017. The OL does not appear to be better after sending several guys to the NFL. The WR position has been a weak point since Quintez Cephus was under sexual assault allegations and they wound up bringing him back. They actually brought back Ferguson for a 5th year, but who’s next? You had Chryst trying to give up play calling duties- then had to take them back.
During Taylor’s era- Bart Houston started 2017 then lost his job to Hornibrook. Then Hornibrook lost his job to Coan. Coan then gave way to Mertz after Taylor left for the NFL. The offense has steadily fallen and is now embarrassingly bad- and I think you can look at the way the QB position instability is a window into why.
For years we thought Chryst was making good out of mediocre- but what example do we have that this is still the case? How much of this is the fact that between 2017-19, their offense was held up by one of the greatest college RBs in history and a very good OL? Clearly there hasn’t been stability at the QB position- guys would win and then lose their starting jobs. The offense still has the same problems but now they no longer have Taylor to hold them up.
Is Mertz better or worse than Coan? Hornibrook? Well, Mertz hasn’t had Taylor and a top OL, is it a fair comparison? Is it possible we’re seeing the house of cards that was held up by Taylor?
