"The Packers will spend the next six months deciding if they're better with Newhouse at left tackle, Bulaga at right tackle and Don Barclay backing up or Bulaga at left tackle, Barclay at right tackle and Newhouse backing up."

Makes sense to me. Always wondered why they didn't put him at LT since he was obviously their best tackle after Clifton retired.

And Newhouse is a turnstile at LT. Maybe he can be a decent RT, but likely is best served as a backup, IMO.

Any decision now on moving Bulaga to the left side in 2013 will depend on his health, McCarthy said. Bulaga suffered what he called a small fracture in the capsule of his left hip in Game 9 and was done for the season.

"We're not doing anything like that right now," McCarthy said. "We've got to look at the draft and see what happens."

I would call Newhouse's play "serviceable" last season. I didn't think he was horrible, but there's definitely a LOT of room for improvement from the position. If Bulaga can step that position up a couple steps and Barclay can solidly man RT, I'm all for it. Barclay is a pretty big question mark though. He looked good as a run blocker, but pass blocking was very iffy.
I talk this week with a guy who has family in GB. Someone from that family said they saw Sherrod at a grocery store limping badly. That doesn't bode well for him.

Last year they also drafted Datko - who fell significantly in last year's draft because of his injuries. He might have otherwise gone somewhere in the first three rounds. Last year during TC he made progress and spent last year on the PS. He may also factor into GBs decisions on the OL.
As I recall, Bulaga played at RT to 'accomodate' Cliffy during his last year here. My guess is Campen and MM were looking for stability, and kept Bulaga at RT. Newhouse played decently enough his first year, and I'm sure coaches expected mmore, but stats be damned, my eyes tell me he was horrid this year.
Of course, if/when Sherrod pans out and/or Newhouse manages to become a blocker, they can experiment with the positions. Before injury, I thought Bulaga was good enough to play either T position, but he played poorly enough this last year that I want to see how well he comes back from his hip injury before I would consider him at LT.
Sherrod's injury really scares me, and his return certainly isn't a given. Unless a light suddenly comes on for Newhouse, I think he's plateaued where he's at, and that ain't good enough.
Barclay has got the heart to play LT, but not the skills.
Lastly, I hate to use yet another high pick specifically for a LT, but if there's a guy available that can fill that role for us, I'm all for it. This draft class may offer the best opportunity.

I don't recall any undue hype before the draft with Datko. And early in TC he did get tossed around. But as TC went on he improved. Good enough to start? Maybe not, but by the end of TC he wasn't getting tossed around like he was at first. In his defense he was coming off a year where he missed a bunch of games due to his shoulder injury. Just a guess, but maybe by the time he was rehabed to the point where he could work out like he would need was to close to TC to gain the strength back that he would need. Anyway, this year we will find out if he has any chance - assuming he stays healthy. At this point only the coaches who have been watching him know for sure. We will see. What GB does in the draft will speak volumes about what they think (or not think) of Datko.

I should've said around here. I know Datko was getting mentoined for the Outland trophy before his injury and after he was drafted everyone was hoping it was a steal pick. Then we see him in a couple of preseason games and he just doesn't get beat, he gets destroyed, like Allen Babre destroyed.

Potential and injury issues together, forget it. From his draft profile: Lacks ideal bulk and functional strength — is a narrow-framed, converted tight end and still looks it. That's the kiss of death in Green Bay.

It's been big meathead, 4 year starters like Barclay, Lang, Sitton that are the guys that can hold their own.
I thought Datko was a 3 or 4 year starter at FSU? My understanding of him was that he was a very intelligent, technique oriented player who held his own. Kind of like a poor man's Anthony Costanzo (Indianapolis). The lack of bulk and the injuries were his major issues. The injuries are impossible to predict, but it's possible he could bulk up to the point where he can hold up from a physical standpoint.
While I am not as down on Newhouse as some, he reminds me of Tootie Robbins in that he got in the way of pass rushers but couldn't run block, I would like to see somebody on that left side who can force the opposition to honor the run. I also think the chatter about Bulaga to LT may be an indication that the coaching staff is warming up to Barclay (and his anticipated improvement in year two) and his potential to improve the line w\o having to spend another draft choice on a tackle.

....if I remember correctly his biggest weakness was a lack of upper body strength If so that is alot easier to remedy than a lack of quickness.
