Disagree. He didn't "blow" the assignment, he freelanced due to film study. Good thing for him he was right.

I suppose that is possible. Being a pessimist in all things Jarrett Bush regarding his skills as a defensive back, I always assumed he blew coverage, and that play in the Superbowl was no exception. I seem to remember him bumping into another Packer defender (can't remember who off the top of my head) when he made that pick. From this lay person's eyes, I got the strong impression Bush wasn't where he was supposed to be, but stumbled into something great. No way of knowing for sure, though.
"...β€œJarrett on that play played it perfectly,” Whitt said. β€œEverybody keeps saying the tight end was running free, but it wasn’t because of what he did. He did the right thing on that play.”

No, it wasn't luck but the countless hours of film study that prepared Bush to make the play of his life. He recognized the Steelers' play and created a turnover. If Woodson had made the interception, people would describe it as a "heads up play" instead of dumb luck.

Bush has kept a roster spot because he's a very good special teams guy. That is it.

If you want to hang your hat on his play in the Superbowl go right ahead. If that game is one more quarter they lose that game because we had backups playing corner and Big Ben was picking them apart in the second half.

If you thought route 28 and route 24 were bad cover guys wait until this guy lines up as a starter. Tramon will look like Deion with everyone throwing Bush's way.

In his 6 years/now 7 with the packers he has played in as many or more games then ARod...Cwood...Hawk...Jennings and Pickett

Accountability and availability

That doesn't make him a good CB. I get he's a great ST player, and coaches love his practice habits, yada yada. Fact of the matter is, when he's playing in a defensive backfield, more often than not, things break down for him in coverage.

I hope he proves me wrong this season. I'm not expecting it, though.

I don't see anyone doing that ("hat hanging"). Bush's limitations as a CB have been well-documented. You stated he "lacks instincts", and I simply presented an example that directly contradicted that assertion. On the biggest NFL stage possible, no less.

As far as that Super Bowl goes, the Packers absolutely missed Woodson in the 2nd half (Shields getting dinged didn't help either). Nobody is arguing otherwise.

Football games aren't five quarters long, so that statement about "one more quarter" is just silly.

BTW, the first TD drive the Steelers scored in the 2nd half to pull within four points, they didn't even throw the ball once (they ran it down our throats). Rather difficult to blame Bush's coverage skills for that.

They also had an entire half to make up their deficit, and they didn't. Bush and Lee were by no means great, but they at least held their own enough to win, and in the end that's all that matters.

And really, isn't that about as much as you can ask for from your 4th/5th CBs?

If Bush plays the first defensive snap of the game, he's considered the "starter" even if he's not on the field even 50% of the time because of sub-packages.

If you ask me (cliche warning), it's making a "mountain out of a mole hill".

But by all means, be my guest.

Great Bush quote...

"We beat ourselves. They really didn't beat us," cornerback Jarrett Bush said after the game, via the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "We just have to hunker down and make sure we're gap sound and get on the same page. Obviously, small things being miscommunicated on the field become big things, so they exploited us and that's what happened."

Your team got their a$$es-whipped. You were part of that, not the only part, but a part. Be man enough to admit it and give the 49ers credit for embarrassing you in your house.
Bush obviously shouldn't be out there except maybe in a situation where they need 6 or more DBs. But what was really disappointing is that there were a number of Packer defenders that were equally as bad as Bush if not worse yesterday. Morgan Burnett was bad. DJ Smith who I really like was bad. The D-Line was bad. Nick Perry was bad when forced to be in coverage (which is more a coaching mistake than anything else).

You add Jarrett Bush to all that kind of bad and it was toxic soup of bad on the defensive side. As others have pointed out, put a young guy out there in his place and let him take his lumps and develop. There is no hope for Bush as a corner, he just doesn't have the skills even though he may be one of those "try-hard" guys that the coaching staff really likes.
Bush is a 7th year CB that looks like a rookie. There was one play in the fourth quarter on a deep pass to the right sideline that looked like it could have been called for PI, only it was clearly uncatchable. While not PI, Bush once again failed to get his head around and look for the ball. Yet Capers continues to out him out there. You may as well play base defense with 3 lineman vs. 2 lineman and Bush.

Is it time to start questioning Capers? This defense was played poorly for 18 games now. Yeah, Collins is out, but with CMIII, Woodson, Williams, Raji and a number of other talented guys, this defense shouldn't be this terrible. I just don't get it.
This Bush quote seems to be getting somewhat pervasive with a faction of players on this team. While it's nearly impossible from an outside perspective to get a feel for the attitude in the locker room, I can't help but wonder if all the success and hype has gone to their heads. Since their SB run, they basically have been the darlings of the media, and everyone and their brother seems to have jumped on the bandwagon.

It's a positive thing to expect to win games, not such a positive when you feel teams should just roll over for you, and you don't have to stay on top of your own thing. The blueprint seems to be out on how to beat this team, as evidenced by their last two home games- punch them in the mouth, play smart and physical football, and you get them on the ropes.

After one game I believe the glaring weaknesses on this team ARE correctable, but guys need to shut their mouth, practice and work hard, and work on their own game...giving no credit to the last 2 teams that walked into your house and had their way will get this team squat when it matters most.

Chicago comin in this Thursday....this is the time to check your ego at the door...because should they lose, and lose convincingly, there may be an early season crisis for MM to deal with.
While it can be a positive that these issues seem correctable, it's also frustrating that they haven't been corrected. Yes, Collins is gone and likely can't be replaced. But they've been without him for over a year now, so you'd think they'd have figured out how to cover without him. Not all defenses fold like ours without a top 5 safety, so why does ours?

Blown coverages, missed tackles and poor gap assignment have become the norm on this defense for the last 18 games. I would say get new players, but this defense already had significant turnover this offseason and the same mistakes are there. These coaches better figure something out b/c at this rate, it's going to be a tough season to watch.

Not directed at anyone in particular, but it seems many assume the replacement was on the team last year when Collins went down... when in reality the replacement might have been drafted in April and has seen little action yet?
I remember Mark Schlereth talking on the radio awhile back about practice players and game players (it was in reference to Tebow, but it rung true). He was talking a teammate in Idaho he had that could punt like a NFL all-pro in practice (even against pressure), but once he got into a game, he was terrible. Every week in practice, the punter would be dropping kicks inside the 5 like he was automatic. But in a game, he'd shank every other kick. He lasted a few games but then coaches had to bench him, never to be heard from again.

This is Bush. He's an all-pro in practice but in a game he just can't play. He gets in position but as soon as the ball is in the air, Bush s**ts the bed. I'm done with the Bush experiment in the secondary; I really hope MM and Capers are too. Let him dominate special teams and leave it at that.
Bush may be a special team demon, but how about Kuhn putting Hester down after a 5 yard return when it looked like Hester might have something to work with. Francois also made a great play on Hester.

Crosby and Masthay have had a lot to do with the improvement of ST's. Crosby's KO's are consistently sailing through the end zone. Masthay had a 58 yard punt that Hester had to FAIR CATCH on his own 18 yard line.

When House returns it's going to be virtually impossible for Bush to see any defensive snaps.
