Michael Vick, 10-year NFL veteran, had to be taught by Chip Kelly how to carry a football

Michael Vick, the 32-year-old starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, has played 10 seasons in the NFL, played two seasons at Virginia Tech, started three years for his high school team and probably played youth football for many years before that. And throughout those thousands of practices and hundreds of games, Vick says nobody taught him how to properly carry a football.

It is absolutely mind-blowing that Vick didn't know the correct way to carry a football before new Eagles coach Chip Kelly pulled him aside at a recent practice and taught him, but that's what he told PhillyMag.com:

“Chip told me how to run with the football the other day,” Vick said. “He taught me how to run with the football and how to carry the football, and I think it’s something that you just have to work on.”

The PhillyMag.com writer seemed to think Vick was being facetious, or putting him on, but he wrote that Vick answered a follow-up question earnestly:

“The other day, I broke out in the pocket, and the first thing Chip told me was to tuck the football,” Vick said. “So I showed him how I was running with it, and he looked at it and he knocked the ball right out of my hands. And he was like, ‘Hold it like this.’ And what he told me felt comfortable. I had a tighter grip on the football. That should secure that problem as long as I work on it. Like I said, you’re always a work in progress, and even when you think you know it all, sometimes you don’t. The people who feel like they know everything, they don’t.”

Vick has 791 rushing attempts in his NFL regular-season career, another 235 at Virginia Tech, and nobody ever thought to teach him how to properly carry the ball so he wouldn't fumble it. It's even more amazing considering Vick has been prone to fumbles through his career. He has fumbled 87 times in his NFL career, losing 39. He fumbled 32 times in the last three years alone, and turnovers are the major reason his star dimmed after what looked like a career rebirth in Philadelphia a few years ago. Maybe a simple "high and tight!" would have prevented some. continue

Maybe Mike wasn't paying attention last year

Diagnosing Michael Vick’s Fumble Problem

by Tim McManus on October 8, 2012

“Yesterday it was happening on plays where he was trying to advance the football,” said Reid. “Style isn’t ball security, because every running back has a different style. You just have to hang onto the football. There’s not much else I can say other than that. You keep it high and tight and cover it in traffic, that’s what you do.”

Reid also ruled out the beefed-up flak jacket that Vick is wearing as a culprit.

For the head coach, the problem comes down to fundamentals. High and tight. Cover it in traffic

Certainly the head coach is on point from a technical standpoint. But what is not accounted for in that explanation is why it continues to happen with Vick. The problems have obviously been identified, but not fixed.continue
I don't see how a guy that mentally challenged is going to run a high pace offense.

Typical when a new coach comes in for guys to think he is giving them all these new techniques, when in reality they are just slight variations, or a different way of saying what coaches have been telling them for years.
Coach: Hey Mike, got that DVD of the gameplan?

Mike Vick: Yeah sure coach, it's in the backseat of my car. I'll check it out tonight after practice.

When he came into the league he had blinding speed & that carried him through for a few years. He's nothing now. He'll be out of the league in 1-2 years.

I probably shouldn't do this cuz the last thing we need is another thread derailed off into brentville...
Vick is a prime example of having all the skills in the world but either not applying himself because he thinks he's already so good or not having a coach around who could rein him in. Same thing could very well have happened to ol' rocket arm bert if he had not had Holmgren. Once Holmgren was gone the circus began and bert became a loose cannon. about the only thing that sorta reined in vick was prison. if I have a guess, he'll struggle mightily this season with chipper's O.
High-paced offense in the NFL...yeah...

Dan Snyder thought if he brought Spurrier into the league he could replicate that style. We saw how well that worked.

If Cheaty Chippy tries to run the exact same O at Philly, he will fail. If he makes it more NFL friendly, he's got a shot.

Chip also gets a mulligan by using Vick his first season. It offers an easy out if the offense comes up short " vick can't run this offense and has too many turnovers" while also buying some time for his plan to come together. Vick can win a few games based on his experience and take the inevitable hits - while keeping the other QBs clean for next season

Just like the Packers front office wasn't planning to win one with their old QB, Chip Kelly is using Vick as a placeholder while he revamps the rest of the squad

Vick in 2013 is like the expendable guys Captain Kirk always sent down to the new planet to check it out. Vick will be the guinea pig and scapegoat all wrapped into one nice easily-ejected package
