quote:
Green Bay - Defensive coordinator Dom Capers has already spoken to Oakland GM Reggie McKenzie about the Raiders' open head coaching position, a source familiar with the Raiders search said Monday.

Capers is one of a large lot of candidates McKenzie, the former Packers director of football operations, has interviewed for the spot once held by Hue Jackson. McKenzie appears to be casting a wide net to make sure he gets the right guy and interviewing Capers certainly makes sense.

According to the source, Capers and McKenzie had discussions about the job, but it's not clear if a full-fledged interview took place.

Reports have said McKenzie spoke with inside linebackers coach Winston Moss in Green Bay prior to the Packers' playoff loss to the New York Giants. According to CBS' Charley Casserly, the Raiders asked permission to speak to Capers, but that might have occurred last week and it's possible Capers met with McKenzie over the weekend.

I heard today the DC for Denver is also on the interview list.

McKenzie is really taking a shotgun approach to finding hopeful candidates for the job. Not sure if that always works out. I always thought it was best to have a small but well-represented group to select from. Then they dont pan out, you keep fishing one-at-a-time.
Good for the Packer coaching staff. The only thing that bothers me is coaches interviewing for other jobs while they still have business to take care of in Green Bay. I'd prefer their full attention on the upcoming game plan instead of preparing for a job interview for another team. That, coupled with the Philbin episode, had to have an effect on the game planning.
It doesnt scare me (too much) to see and hear about Packer coaches moving on to better themselves. I like the idea of impending and imposed changes. You gotta figure MM and TT have plans in place to replace those guys who leave.

Remember what Jerry Glanville said "NFL stands for Not For Long". So always keeping things new, fresh and fun...and hopefully successful should translate into more wins.

Maybe Capers goes...maybe not. Unless he's got issues with someone on staff or in admin, why would he leave? Cold winters may be one other reason. If he was younger, I would say he would likely go elsewhere to be a HC. Guess we'll see.
from Pro Football Weekly:

"Expect the Raiders to transform to a 3-4 defense when they hire a new head coach. Several of their top defenders — including Richard Seymour, Kamerion Wimbley and Rolando McClain — have played in the scheme during their professional or college careers. However, the team would need to find some more depth at linebacker and potentially defensive end if some of their current linemen can't make the transition from playing defensive tackle to end."

McKenzie may be interviewing Capers about the 3-4 defense and potential candidates to install a new defense in Oakland, more than considering him for the HC job.

And since Richard Seymour won't be around by the time that transition is complete, they should trade him to GB for some draft picks
I believe McKenzie and the Raiders are in over their heads. Clearly with all the applicants he isn't sure what direction to take. Thankfully we have TT and MM. Capers? Failed twice previously as a head coach. Peter Principle if he gets the job. I applaud Miami with their selection of Joe Philbin. What is wrong with Tampa and Oakland. Can they not identify the young bright coaches that are ready to lead?
