Though Benson remained unsigned through the first few weeks of training camp, the Packers weren't the only team to make him a contract offer.

After the large group of reporters surrounding Benson had left, he told FOXSportsWisconsin.com that both the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders had attempted to sign him prior to the Packers calling.

"Both teams that needed backs," Benson added.

But those situations just weren't right for him.

"They talk about a Super Bowl around here, not about winning their first playoff game," Benson said earlier in the interview.

Benson spurns Lions

I didn't realize he had 2 offers on the board already. Wonder what the Lions and Raiders offered. Interesting that he probably turned down more money since GB offered nothing other then vet min.

It's also interesting to me that for those who thought Ryan Grant was either as good as Benson is OR is better then him, here Grant (at least for now) continues to sit.

The Raiders GM obviously knows Grant very well and knows the kind of player he is.

The Lions as a division rival also know him well and would know that by signing him he'd be a player aiming to show his previous team they made a mistake in not re-signing him.

Yet neither have made the call to Grant. And he continues to sit w/ no job.

So Nelson and Lang take less to stay in Green Bay.......nice work TT. He's built the right culture and drafts the right guys to be able to do this. The money likely saved on Nelson and Lang's deals are probably enough to extend another young player.

Add in the no risk deal for Hargrove and players will take notice of how the Packers culture (AKA Packer People Big Grin ) is a positive one to work in.
For may years, the ****ing patriots were the team of choice for veterans that wanted one last shot at a Title before their career was over. Belichick commented that he liked signing those guys because he knew he would get their very best effort. I can see GB being viewed similarly over the next couple of seasons

And no matter how hard fans try to pigeon-hole Thompson, he's shown the ability to adapt his player acquisition plans to the current team needs

Ted never signs FAs
Ted never trades UP
Ted doesn't value Guards

“I think you have to be willing to (evolve), yeah,” Thompson said Tuesday morning. “I think we’re all continuing to evolve and trying to get better at our craft. What you do roster-wise with a team depends on where that team is. So we try to apply that to the now and not what I would have done in 2006 or 2007.”

quote:

“A team is ever evolving, and I just think that we just felt like those were good moves at this particular time. We were very, very young at a couple positions,” Thompson said. “With Reggie Wells, we’re very young in the backup roles (on the line), and we felt like adding a guy with experience, we could take a look at him and see how he fits in and if it’s a good fit. I don’t know if there’s really any cosmic change in the way we like to do business.”

The Lions invited Grant for a visit a couple months ago. Grant didn't go, apparently he wanted more money than they offered.

That's a kick-ass quote.

Exactly my thoughts. Awesome.
Why not?

He didn't want to go Detoilet (AKA Marijuana Central, as of late), or Oakland (AKA "Oakland"), and instead wanted to come to little old boring Green Bay, because at 29, all he wants now is to get to the Super Bowl.

Oh, and he sets high goals for himself too.

How does that not make you feel better?

Confused

I concur, but I don't think we really know if Jolly actually followed through on his end, formally requesting reinstatement. Goodell's comments at the shareholders' meeting suggested he wasn't even sure if they had reviewed it...

I took that as a veiled hint for Johnny to get his rear in gear (or maybe Goodell is just a dickhead)

We also know how that worked out the year before.

Why offer any incentives? He is playing for the league minimum for a player with his number of years in the league.

If we cut him before the first game we pay him nothing. I also believe he signed a split contract. If he gets hurt during the first 8 games we release him, and he doesn't get paid for the last 8 games.
He's a good player IMO... I think he had a chance to be a Corey Dillon like addition for this team. It's obvious he has a specific reason for being a Packer as opposed to the others. It's good enough motivation for any player as far as I'm concerned. If he plays the way he is capable of, it could be similar to what Desmond Howard meant to the '96 team, albeit for drastically different reasons. And he gets to try to exact revenge on the Bears 2 times... can't beat that!
Definitely agreed on the hands. 20 carries at 4 yards a pop is more than this team needs out of its RB. I'd still like to see this team pick up 3rd-and-1 a little easier, but having a ground game may be more valuable this year as every team tries its version of the "blueprint."

Give the ball to Benson with Kuhn and Crabtree leading, or throw it 70 yards.
Haha.

Kuhn on short yardage has become somewhat predictable, IMO.

And with Benson running so well, I don't know why they didn't led Kuhn plow a hole for him on that 3rd and 1.

Anybody else miss the ol' wishbone formation with Kuhn and Hall/Johnson?
