Got to coach them up.   And after Mertz I don't care if I ever see another 4 or 5 star recruit.

I think you can coach up OL and DL a lot more than the speed positions. It's harder to project how 16 and 17 year olds are going to handle putting on weight and muscle as they mature into grown men. A lot of 3 star types get into a collegiate strength and conditioning program and really advance.

The problem the Badgers historically have had is that they don't get enough athletes to play DB or WR at the highest level. In that case, guys that run 4.3s or low 4.4s in high school are usually the 5 star guys. You can improve the speed of DBS/WRs that run 4.6s or 4/5s in high school a little bit, but they aren't becoming speed burners if they aren't already. That's where you need the 4 and 5 star guys.

Lee Evans and Jamar Fletcher were 3 star guys.  Leonhard and Abbrederis were walk ons.  But this current coaching staff (top to bottom) is nowhere near as strong developing guys as it was 10-20+ years ago.

I also think recruiting overall has slipped and traditional places they used to mine for talent (Chicagoland, STL, New Jersey, Ohio) aren’t as welcoming to the Badgers.

Perhaps it can get back to that but again it’s horrible special teams and stupid penalties and mistakes that keep holding them back.

Look at who gets the 4 and 5 star guys. It's about 15 schools that get the vast majority of them.

https://247sports.com/Season/2...mpositeTeamRankings/

Alabama has 19 of them next year alone (5 5-stars). Ohio State has 19. Michigan has 7. MSU has 9.

The other problem is that Wisconsin is even getting killed on getting 3 stars now. They have 11 in 2023. Look at what the other Big 10 schools are getting (# of 3-stars or better in 2023): Penn State (20), Minnesota (16), Iowa (18), Northwestern (19), Purdue (19), Nebraska (15), Maryland (20), Illinois (19), Rutgers (16). They have the 13th rated recruiting class in the Big 10 in 2023. You don't expect to compete with OSU and Michigan, but when the majority of schools are getting almost twice as many 3-stars or better than you it's a major problem.

Iowa has always been a factor in recruiting, but Purdue and Minnesota and even Indiana have gotten much better in the last 10 years.  Bielema is still a meathead, but he will be going after the same OL and DL and RB at Illinois.

No one is expecting UW to win recruiting battles with Ohio State and Michigan, but MN and Iowa and Purdue and now Illinois? That’s a problem.
