Lions defensive end Cliff Avril is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and he says he’s hoping a long-term deal can get done to stay in Detroit.

But the Lions have an awful lot of money tied up in their defensive line right now, and it raises the question of how much money they can afford to give one more defensive lineman.

“There’s a lot of money in my position group,” Avril told MLive.com. “I don’t know. It might just be a financial thing. I don’t know. It’s my first time going through free agency, so I don’t really know how this thing works upstairs.”

With Avril’s fellow starting defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch scheduled to make $5 million next season, and starting defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Corey Williams getting $9.25 million and $4.9 million respectively, a huge contract for Avril would give the Lions an extremely expensive defensive line.

In 2011: 11 sacks 6 FF's 36 Tackles 1 INT

Age 25.

No idea if he is athletic enough or has the ability to play in a 3-4. Jenkins was able to both. Kampman really was not.

Assuming Collins is done, GB would need to find a quality DE, ROLB, and a Safety going into 2012 to turn this defense around. You likely could throw in CB as well.

As good as TT is in drafts, IMO that's a tall order to try and do all of that purely in a draft.

We all understand TT's philosophy with FA and he does not get into bidding wars. Still you have to wonder if this is a year he finds his next Woodson or Pickett via FA.

Nope. Schwartz wouldn't allow any DE of his not be lathered with some form of dumb:

Lions | Defenders were bored dominating Tim Tebow
Mon, 31 Oct 2011 07:37:35 -0700

A Detroit Lions defensive player said following the team's Week 8 win over the Denver Broncos that the defense became bored dominating QB Tim Tebow in the second half. "Can you believe '15'?" the anonymous defender asked. "Come on – that's embarrassing. I mean, it's a joke. We knew all week that if we brought any kind of defensive pressure, he couldn't do anything. In the second half it got boring out there. We were like, 'Come on – that's your quarterback? Seriously?'" DL Cliff Avril added, "As long as he felt our pressure, he was gonna make crazy decisions."
Freep mentioned the Lions plan on tagging Avril.

He's a good 4-3 DE , and goes around 260, not so sure he would fit at DE in Packer defense.

If memory serves, it was Avril and Suh that Falcon players claimed were celebrating while Ryan was on the ground injured. Not cool.

Avril was also the guy that was on-field "Teboing" after sacking the chosen one.
Avril is an intruiging guy. 7 of his 11 sacks came outdoors on grass. He's not just a speed guy built for a fast indoor carpet.

He does have some stupid in him. Might be a reflection of the petulant child - warrior coach. Not sure if he's a fit for a 3-4 defense either.

Regardless, any DE the Packers find will need another OLB to help CM3.
Lions are screwed. I heard that Suh, Stafford, Vandenbosch and Johnson count ~$60m towards their 2012 cap. With Tulloch (LB), Avril and Wright (CB) all free agents, they're going to struggle to keep their team intact while improving it. Guess that's the penalty for drafting in the top 3 from 2008-2010.

I'd leave Avril alone. He seems like a natural 4-3 DE, not a 3-4 OLB or DE. Some guys just fit better in one system. Jenkins was a rare player that fit in both.

Saw that too P Dog but franchising a DE would cost the Lions still a lot of money 10.6 mil in 2012. Some talking heads aren't sure they can afford it. That would mean their DL as it stands would be incredibly expensive.

Also looming is Megatron who's due to make 14 million in 2012. No way can they afford that so they need to re-work his deal. How much lower Johnson will go remains to be seen.
Not sure how accurate these numbers are, but pulled them from http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/detroit-lions/yearly/

Kyle Vanden Bosch 5,000,000
Corey Williams 4,900,000
Nate Burleson 4,000,000
Dominic Raiola 3,400,000
Stephen Peterman 2,725,000
