Crosby planted too close to ball on late miss against Colts

Shawn Slocum has seen Mason Crosby kick enough field goals to know when he’s in rhythm and when he’s not.

On film, Slocum saw Crosby planting his foot too close to the ball, which caused him to pull his final 51-yard attempt wide left that would have tied the game and forced overtime with only seconds remaining in regulation.

During Monday’s film session, Slocum, Crosby, long snapper Brett Goode and holder Tim Masthay watched the clip together, reaffirming Slocum’s instinct that the hold and placement of the ball were fine.

Im guessing he over corrected for the first miss. Quotes from Slocum after the click

That ball really did hook badly after it started out looking like it had a chance. Maybe, like in the old Metrodump here in the Twin Cities, they turned on the huge fans to push the ball sideways. Big Grin
as good as his numbers are I just don't have confidence that Crosby is going to hit a long field goal to win a game. I have more confidence that he might hit the goal post or cross bar and bounce back than that he would actually hit it through.
Not only that, bubbleboy, he has been kicking well for the season up to this point. I don't understand how a kicker can just all of a sudden lose his mojo. Confused

What was the poop with his first miss? Did he miss it as badly as the last one or was it closer? And what distance?
I remember that pitiful game vs. the Eagles. The Eagles punt returner muffed 2 punts & it's the only way the Packers won. 13-12 I think?

The next day, the Eagles cut that guy.

I'm sure he's made a couple kicks that may not have been at the end of the game but were very important. I can't think of them right now.
Interesting comments and the more I think about it the more it seems to make sense.

Crosby does not thrive in those critical situations. I can only think of a few games where he's kept them in it or won the game. Too often we see endings like we did last week, and that's very frustrating because the guy is talented but he's got to make some of those kicks.

Crosby is getting good money to concentrate. He should have the process down by now. At the end of the season evaluate his misses as well as the games his misses cost the team and deal with him accordingly. It is a tough world, dont know of too many career fields that reward failure.

Baseball rewards people for failure. The best fail at a rate of 66.6% of the time

IN football. if you make 65% of FG 50+ yards, that's successful

That is exactly why I dont follow baseball. The number of field goal attempts over 50 yards is vastly less than, for example, times at bat in baseball. The average "at bat, game on the line" situation in baseball occurs far less than in football. 2012 Green Bay field goal success percent this year so far is 71.43%--2011 success percent 86.67--at home 100 percent--away 50 percent. 2010 Green Bay overall success percent 78.12 and in 2009 a success percent of 73.68. Green Bay ranks in the bottom 10 teams for 2010/2019 seasons and in the bottom 5 teams so far for 2012.

at family nite Crosby tried a bunch of long kicks and almost every one of them looked like the final one at Indy. I was mildly worried then... I agree with what most are saying: no pressure or need, he'll make it. game on the line, I'm crossing all my fingers, toes, eyes, arms, legs and sacrificing chickens.
That kick against the Giants was like a 30 yarder, hardly a tough kick. As I recall even that kick was a little shaky.

If it comes down to a last second kick and the game is tied he might make it. If they're behind and it's a 45 yarder forget it.
I thought they rushed the FG. Just seemed they ran out there and quick-snapped it before Indy could call a freeze timeout. Appeared to me Crosby backed up and the ball was snapped and it sailed straight and then went crookedly awry.
