Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett wanted Monte Kiffin, and now they got their man.

Kiffin has agreed to become the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Ed Werder reports.

As the guru of the Tampa 2 defense, Kiffin will surely bring in a dramatic departure from the schemes of the previous defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan. Kiffin will shift from a 3-4 front to a 4-3 front, and the Cowboys’ secondary will learn to play in a Cover 2 defense.

The question now is whether the Cowboys have the right personnel for that: DeMarcus Ware has become one of the NFL’s best pass rushers as a 3-4 outside linebacker, but now he’ll be shifted into a 4-3 defensive end. And the Cowboys made major investments in the cornerbacks last season, signing Brandon Carr to a free-agent contract and trading up to draft Morris Claiborne, but they made those investments with the idea that Carr and Claiborne were the right fits for Ryan’s defense, not for Kiffin’s.

So for Jones and Garrett, bringing in Kiffin is a gamble. If the gamble doesn’t pay off, expect even bigger changes in Dallas a year from now.

He was really good. A long time ago in Tampa.

Once again Jerruh with a hire that will have people scratching their heads. I really wonder how effective Ware will be in a 4-3 as well.

Trade bait in 2013?

Yeah, this just seems like a dumb move. I suppose tHe D-Backs will be fine, and Ware will probably be just fine as a rush end (though it doesn't take advantage of his versatility as much) but the rest of the front-seven would seem a really poor fit. Maybe put Spencer at the other DE spot and be really light on the outside? They'll need at least two linebackers, most likely, with Sims' durability issues. Or do they put Spears at LDE and leave Spencer at LB?
Ware is heavier than KGB was already. He'll do just fine as a 4-3 DE. 6'4", 260 isn't all that unusual for a DE in this style of defense. Jared Allen is only 10 pounds heavier (and 2 inches taller). It may actually end up working to his advantage since he won't have to worry about covering anyone now.
The Tampa 2 calls for having light, fast pass rushers across the front so I don't think they will have too many problems converting. In the past I think Kiffin has wanted taller, lankier pass rushers who can bat down balls, but Ware and Spencer are 6'4" and 6'3" respectively so it's not like they're really small. They have Ratliff and Spears up front who should do fine in the middle. And then they want smaller, faster LBs. Sean Lee seems like an ideal fit at MLB for them with his coverage ability and they also have Bruce Carter who seems a solid fit at WLB with his ability to run and move sideline to sideline. So to me their front 7 won't have a terrible time converting IMO.

I think CB and Safety is where the real questions are. Carr and Claiborne like bump n run coverage. They're big, physical CBs. Not only are they going to accept playing in zone, but are they going to be able to handle it. It's not a given that every CB who is good in Man is also good in Zone. And I don't know that their Safetys are physical enough to play in the box as often as required.
The Cowboys are similar to the Bears in that they have good (enough) QBs IF they'd put decent offensive lines in front of them but with the pressure/beating they take they make too many mistakes in desperation.

Yeah Lane is a real class act. I don't think Kiffin's mind or passion is gone and certainly his knowledge isn't gone. He was a terrible fit in college. He didn't like recruiting and rubbed some players/parents the wrong way with his style. I don't think players ever bought into his system. I think it will be different for him in the NFL.
I have wondered if the Packers personel is not more suited for a 4-3. They would have great tackle depth with Raji, Daniels, Worth and Pickett and Wilson, Mike Neal and Nick Perry at DE and a pretty good LB corp with Matthews outside and Bishop in the middle. But would the results be any different?

They'd probably be better against the run.
