QUARTERBACKS (2)

Keep:  Rodgers, Young

Practice Squad (PS):  Coleman

Cut:  Harrell
Comments:  Have to admit Harrell looked a bit better last night with some surprising zip on his throws.  But thought Young looked better as well.  Staying with Young.  He may not know the offense (yet) as well as Harrell. but he has the significant edge in talent, NFL starting experience and running ability.  Coleman may still develop into something with another year on the Practice Squad.

RUNNING BACKS (5)

Keep:  HBs Lacy (D2), Harris, Franklin (D4), Starks, FB Kuhn (30)

Cut:  HBs Green, Peace, FB Amosa

Comments:  Still think Kuhn may be cut and Green kept instead, but at this point I'll predict Kuhn stays and Green gets cut -- or ideally traded for something.  Starks get nod over Green due to superior running ability, but his injury history makes it a close call.  Not sure Peace or Amosa have shown enough to warrant a PS slot.

WIDE RECEIVERS (5)

Keep:  Cobb, Nelson, Jones, Boykin, Ross

PS:  Johnson (D7A)

Cut:  Dorsey (D7B), Walker, Gillett, White, Hines

Injured Reserve:  Cunningham

Comments:  No change from last time.  Would only keep 6 if compelling -- and so far it's not.  Betting on Ross being the primary kick returner.  Right now, Johnson kept on PS purely on potential.  And yes, while Walker's caught a few passes, I still prefer to bet on a draft choice with much better size and speed.

TIGHT ENDS (5)

Keep:  Finley, Quarless, Mulligan, Bostick, Taylor

Cut:  Williams, Stoneburner

Comments:  If keeping Kuhn, maybe they only go with 4 TEs.  Still betting on Quarless overcoming his quad injury.  Let's hope Mulligan's arm injury from last night nothing serious.  Absolutely think Bostick replaces the incredibly underwhelming Williams.  Taylor stays primarily for Special Teams.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8)

Keep:  Bakhitari (D4A), Sitton, Dietrich-Smith, Lang, Barclay, Newhouse, Van Roten, Taylor

PUP:  Sherrod, Tretter (4B)

PS:  Datko

Cut:  Gerhart, Lewis, Hughes

IR:  Bulaga

Comments:  No changes.  Seems neck-and-neck between Barclay and Newhouse at RT -- Barclay the better run blocker, Newhouse the better pass protector.  Still hoping Sherrod will finally contribute this year, holding out some hope for Tretter as well, and that Datko develops with more time.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

Keep:  Jones (D1), Raji, Pickett (33), Daniels, Wilson, Neal, Jolly (30)

PUP:  Worthy

PS:  Boyd (D5B)

Cut:  Pena, Miller

Comments:  Also no changes.  Still keeping 7 because Neal hybrid DL/OLB.  Jolly looked great last night.  Like Boyd, but think he can be kept via PS.  Had some hopes for Pena, but haven't seen much.

LINEBACKERS (9)

Keep:  OLBs Matthews, Perry, Moses, Mulumba, ILBs Hawk, Jones, Manning, Lattimore, Francois

PS:  OLB Palmer (D6), ILB Barrington (7C)

Cut:  OLB Savage, ILB Reed

Comments:  Keeping Mulumba over Palmer on 53, but making place for latter on PS.  Barrington's potential lands him there as well.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (9)

Keep:  CBs Williams (30), Shields, Heyward, House, Hyde (D5A), Ss Burnett, McMillian, Jennings, Bush

PUP:  S Richardson

PS:  CBs Nixon, Smith

Cut:  CB Means, Ss Fulton, Powell, Banjo

Comments:  No changes.  Boy, Hyde looks like a great pickup considering he's a 5th rounder.  Bush still makes it as 9th DB, emergency S and best ST player.  Smith didn't look good last night, but has the size and speed worth developing.  Banjo made some noise last week, but didn't notice him last night.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Keep:  Crosby, Masthay, Goode

Cut:  Tavecchio

Comments:  Still thinking our placekicker may not be on the roster, will grab a veteran on final cut-downs.  Maybe even the Dolphins' Dan Carpenter, who's out there now.

Starks injury history is less of an issue, IMO, as long as Lacy, Harris and Franklin can run the ball in his absence.

If Kuhn gets cut, I could see the Packers using Neal as a lead blocker in short yardage / goalline situations.

Jolly is a keeper.  He would be highly sought by the rest of the NFL if cut.

Bush will make the team absolutely for his ST contributions.  He may suck on D, but he's an ace on ST.

I think Crosby makes it as the org doesn't want to give up on him quite yet.  But he'll have a short leash, no room for error.

Starks has had a good camp, but he appeared tentative last night and put the ball on the ground. Could go either way between he and Green.

They want Ross to return kicks, but he refuses to seize the opportunity and his roster spot could be in jeopardy. Really liked what I saw from Hyde's one punt return and MM may go in that direction.

Agree with you on DJ Williams; I've seen enough and Bostick is a better option.

Moses doesn't seem to have built on a pretty solid rookie year and he looks to be firmly on the bubble to me.

MM and TT are clearly intrigued by VY but don't see a move away from Harrell unless he makes some pretty big strides in the next few weeks.

Young is going to stick around. On top of having a much higher ceiling than the other two guys, he has the ability to help this team get ready for the Wilsons, RGIIIs and Kaepernicks in practice. He may not have the intelligence of those guys, but in a controlled practice environment, he has the tools to run effective previews of what to expect from them. Even if the Packers knew to expect the read-option/pistol gameplan from the 49ers last year, they had no one on the roster to run an effective mock-up of it in practice.

I posted in another thread that Starks and Greene are 50/50. Either one can stay, and I don't think it makes a difference in the long run. At this point, I'd go with Green, but let's see what the next couple of weeks bring.

I'm looking for a way to try and keep Walker or Gillette for depth, but it's tough to predict who I would replace, either on the 53 or PS. Right now, I'd keep either over Smith for the PS.

Brandon Smith may be worth developing, but if he turns in another performance against the Seachickens like yesterday's against the Rams, I think he's gone.

Crosby makes me nervous too.

I wasn't too impressed with Smith. Seemed to be making too many mistakes.

I wouldn't mind if the Packers cut him.

It's been a small sample but I haven't heard much of Perry this summer nor seen much of him in the two preseason games.  Last night on STL's first run he couldn't disengage from their FB and was blocked out of the play.  He tried to bull rush to the Q on the next couple plays and was completely neutralized.  Still think he will be effective but also waiting for him to show something/anything.

Perry getting handled on the opening play by a FB was completely unacceptable. I'm sure he caught an earful from Greene over that. That can't ever happen.

I'm going to reserve thoughts on his play until after week 2. GB got into all kinds of trouble with Kaep in the playoffs because they had zero pocket containment. CM3 made some comments last week that he and GB have to play SF (and read option teams) different. Can't just blast up field because it opens up running lanes. Haven't really seen CM3 blaze up field around the edge either after two preseason games. Not saying that's what's happening but it may be a reflection of the line working a plan to take away the QB pulling it down for easy yards. Kaep and RG3 to open the season so maybe the plan is to take away one of the options they can easily use to beat you. Make them throw it.

1st half of the Seattle game will be interesting to see how GB attacks Wilson on passing downs.

It's just my opinion but I think there is a long pattern of holding some things back in pre-season. Particularly with our defense.

Whether it is related to evaluation, in some ways which we do not understand, whether it is a move toward safety with certain players or if it's just trying to hide intent I do not know.

But obviously Perry is working on technique in camp and it's been pretty good as others here have stated. For whatever reason it seems Perry is relegated to bull rush so far this pre-season in game action.

Game 1 of regular season we release the hounds, we sure as hell won't do it against Seattle.

Get ready for a bit of a beat down, and some more hand wringing, but thats ok.

Let that little effin twerp in Seattle shoot his wad too early. We won't even remember this game come October.

It means nada. Don't show them a damn thing.

McGinn : Franklin Running Nowhere

Franklin wont be at risk of getting cut, would he?

As it stands right now Lacy is the only back who has shown anything. Assuming Harris makes the team as the second back.  Green, Starks and Franklin seem to be in a muddled mess. Starks may have nailed his own coffin with the fumble Friday night and Im not sure what the plan is with Green. If Franklin can show something it would make it much easier for the coaches with this weeks cuts

from MMQB:

Disappointments

β€’ Johnathan Franklin, RB, Packers: Franklin was the second running back drafted by Green Bay this year, and it appears as if he’ll be at least No. 3 on the team’s depth chart come the regular season. In his first two preseason games, Franklin has managed only 23 yards on nine carries β€” an abysmal 2.5 yards-per-carry clip.

The Packers aren't going to cut Franklin.

The problem is the o-line is not doing a very good job of run blocking.  Lacy made those runs on his own, with brute power and strength that none of the other backs except Starks might have.

Neither Green or Starks have tremendous upside over Franklin, with Starks just too injury prone to justify keeping, and Green really not showing much last year when he was handed the starting job.

I would put McGinn's projection right there with his claim the Pickett and Raji were overweight and out of shape.  Funny, that storyline went nowhere when training camp started.

was just saying the same thing to a coworker, but we took it a step farther.

change up the whole thing on 'em and play the 2s and 3s to start the game and let the 1s have the 3rd quarter.
