The Packers personnel staff isn't trading Jones, imo. Jones is one heck of an insurance policy. Jennings has how many concussions again? Driver is also older and more brittle. Take away those two and suddenly Jones becomes a key cog in the offense...and he can handle the job.

2012 NFL football favors a passing attack and the Packers go deeper there than any other team in football. they like to go after the opposing defense's weakest cb. Jones can do that a heck of a lot better than Gurley or Boykin. For as nice as Boykin has looked none of it has come against top tier NFL talent. He can't do the things Jones can with regards to speed and power.

The WR talent is the Packers greatest advantage and there's little sense in making the deepest position on the roster weaker. They've invested years in developing James Jones and have him at a very reasonable price. There's no financial pressure to get rid of him.

The Packers personnel staff has also shown a propensity for finding high end WR's in the draft. I think they value that position so highly that the next WR that's low on the depth chart is going to be a 2nd/3rd pick with top end potential that will develop into a top end talent in three years. They're not keeping a guy around that at best will be your 4th WR. That spot is going to be for the next Jordy/Greg/Jones/Cobb. Boykin isn't high end, he's a worst case scenario emergency call up.

There was a guy like Boykin last year and there'll be a guy like him next year. He's a practice squad guy and if you don't get him back you find another one next year.
First of all, I think a lot of people forget about what Driver brings to this team off the field. If they were going to cut him, they would have done it already. They would not make a huge splash like that right before the season. I think some players would have some ill feeling toward management. That is not good a week before the season. Also, where were these receivers the last three games?

Why trade JJ for a draft pick now? What will that bring the Packers this year? The Packers plan for the future enough with the draft. Right now, they are planning for the present. That means winning a Super Bowl this year.
Driver will remain as long as he chooses to put on the pads, meanwhile some young, talented wide reciever(s) gets cut and goes to some other team and stars, its hard to star on the Packers as they have so many other stars.if they keep Driver he better get lots of playing time for what it is costing them in the long run,the future talent is everything for success.

While I agree that DD is a special player in GB history and brings an enormous amount of intangibles to the table, there's no doubt TT would cut him if he didn't earn his spot.

I also believe TT would trade JJ for a pick if the right opportunity came along. The man stockpiles draft picks and always has his eye towards the future.

When roster moves are completed, it wouldn't surprise me if either JJ or DD isn't in Green Bay.... or not.
Driver isn't the guy he once was but he's still a better option at this point than Gurley and Borel because he's a known guy and usually doesn't make mistakes.

As for the whole James Jones debate, he is a good insurance policy but if dealing him meant we could get a decent OL backup or another cover CB guy I'd do it. I said it on another thread but for Miami to give up on Vontae Davis so quickly that would have been a great fit for both teams. Miami doesn't have any decent WRs and Phibin knows Jones. Davis is a legit starting CB and would have really shored up the team.
