I'm starting to wonder if one of the motivating factors for AR12 is his allegiance to his good friend, David Dunn.  He hired him in 2008 prior to inking his second contract.  Since then, Dunn has helped to make Rodgers the #8 wage earner in NFL history (then again, nearly any monkey could have had gotten this cash for arguably the best QB in NFL history).

NFL Top Earners through 2020

Annual Breakdown

As has been chronicled numerous times, Rodgers highly reveres his friends and David Dunn is one of them.  Dunn is the architect of the current contract that does not properly insulate his client from the exact situation that exists for the 2021/2022 transition seasons.  Once the Pack selected Love (really confused why Love signed with Dunn), Dunn likely chirped quickly into Aaron's ear to start laying groundwork - as he realized he messed up big time.  At some point last season (likely early) the Rodgers camp likely went to the Packers FO to rework the 21/22 transition and the team rebuffed...then AR12 had a career year...and here we are.

If this does not get resolved in a way that allows Dunn to save face for giving terrible advice to possibly the most talented QB to ever play, it could be the end of him gaining any new mega-clients.  Aaron knows this and he wants to help a friend.

So the new narrative is Rodgers signed a legit contract with the expectations the FO wouldn't try to push him out the door regardless of circumstance after 2021 because that would be fucking insane.  One would think you have some kind of job security after going 13-3 and making it to the NFCC two years in a row.

This is David Dunn's fault.  He's causing the situation by now trying to get a contract that literally protects his clients ability to play football for the Packers, something that's been stated all along and backed up by Hawk's comments.

If the dopes in the FO are so absolutely committed to this transition timeline it is quite possibly the most insane thing I've ever seen in contract negotiations.

Don't overthink this...it's about one thing. 12 wants to finish his career as a Packer, and Gurtie wants that, for now, but he also wants the right to cut him free once he feels Nub is ready to be QB1.

File that one under "having your cake and eating it too."

That is why the FO has leaked "we were prepared to make him the highest paid player in the league," but they leave out the part "for one year."

That way it makes Dunn and 12 look like greedy fucks.

The problem is, there is no transition timeline that we know of...

IF 12 is playing the ambiguity game with the Packers "well, I am not sure when I am going to retire, it depends how I feel," then that is also a problem. If he has said "my plan is to play 3 or 4 more years, then I'm likely going to retire," then IMO, it's up to the Packers to make it happen.

I believe the Packers are the problem here...and I believe it all hinges on Gurtie being a typical personnel guy, and not much of a big picture guy beyond acquiring and developing talent.

Were I WMM, I would tell Gurt "Guarantee Aaron 3 years (through 2023), and tell him after that, the Packers are moving on. Give him a no-trade guarantee. And by the way, if there are blowouts, MLF is going to put Nub in the 4Q to get him reps."

That still allows the Packers to pick up the 5th year option on Nub and let him be QB1 for 2024 IF the guy can play at this level.

This is all a mess of Gurt's making...he thought 2019 AR was as good as he would ever be...2020 was the giant turd in his personnel pie. Aaron is Ferris Bueller to his Ed Rooney. "He makes you look like an ass as is what he does Ed."

2019 is what made Gurt fall in love with Nub...he was the big sexy athlete at QB that gave Gurt a Mahomes chub, and he jumped on him. Had 12 been the MVP in 2019, Nub would be on another team right now.

Yep.

And in the Spring of 2020, that seemed like a good idea. Until AR decided to have an MVP campaign, win his 3rd one, and look like he went into a time machine and retrieved his 2011 self. And then a fucking pandemic occurs which squashes Loves rookie year.

Which then flung a huge fly into the ointment that was their plans.

As others have said, there is plenty of blame to go around this shit show. It's the F.O, it's Rodgers and his camp as well. Only an idiot would believe it's entirely one side or the other.

I just hope this pissing contest ends before TC. Because I feel like the core base of Packer fans will have little patience for the sequel of the circus that came to town in 2008.

I don't understand this.  You're saying Rodgers performance pre-2020 warranted real consideration of replacing Rodgers?  I seriously have zero clue how people think Rodgers was in some state of massive decline.

No, the FO created the situation on multiple fronts.  Shit communication, shut up and play and imagining some idiotic timeline.  Putting an expiration date on a HOF QB who has done everything asked and stated he wants to play and finish his career as a Packer.

That's fucking idiotic beyond belief.

No, that's not what I am saying. Gute invested a 1st round draft pick (and a late one at that) at the most important position in the game while realizing he had a 35 year old + QB who's contract is ending in 2023.

He flat out failed to communicate with Rodgers when he took Love and explained why he did. He failed to let Rodgers know he was still the guy in 2020, in 2021 and beyond as long as Rodgers remains healthy and plays at the level he has. I do not think it would have been that hard for Rodgers to grasp this.

But what other NFL exec's have pointed out, who have no pony in this race, is that for GB to invest a high pick with an aging QB is hardly criminal. In fact, many are saying it was absolutely the right move. NFL history has shown time and again, minus Brady and Wilson, the absolute VAST majority of franchise QB's in the NFL ALL went in the 1st. There's a reason for that.

As NFL fans, we are fixated on Tom Brady and his longevity and are convinced their teams QB can also play at a high level well into their 40's. .

But history doesn't show that. At all. From Favre to Manning to Rivers to Brees and on and on, mid to late 30's is when even HOF QB's often decline.  And when it happens, it happens fast.

Do I want to see that with AR? Of course not. But for Rodgers or anyone else to be butt hurt over a F.O. taking a QB with an aging HOF QB who's contract ends in 3 years is fucking ridiculous. And one step further, for Rodgers to feel threatened by Love is also ridiculous. As long as he's healthy, AR will not be outplayed by Love.

Without question, the F.O fucked up in their communicating with AR when this move went down. He should have gotten reassurance, yes. But the move itself made sense then, it makes sense now.

Rodgers is still a top 5 paid player and he's still in the top 3 all-time in signing bonus, guaranteed money (getting 56 million) .  He'll probably end up the top paid NFL player by the time TC starts. Hopefully we can all move on from this mess and look forward to SB contending 2021 team.

Completely agree but the way they did it obviously sent a message, correctly or incorrectly, that they were ushering Rodgers out the door.  That's what the restructure said as well.  We won't give up the ability to get rid of you after 2021.

So, if that's truly the case, I can't blame Dunn or Rodgers for pushing for more security in a contract.

That's what's so incredibly stupid about this situation.  Likely all of this could've been avoiding with communication and leaving the tough guy bit at the door.

I totally agree with this right here.  Why?  because all of us here have zero insight in to any conversations that have taken place at 1265 or anywhere else.  What we have right now are the Schefters and others in the media throwing crap up against the wall other third hand things.  We have speculation in to what might be the problem but not enough to place blame on either side.

I hate both sides right now for messing with my favorite team and they haven't figured out a way to stop acting like middle school girls.
