Can someone explain where the definition of MVP being "most valuable to the team" came from??
I was always under the impression the MVP was the most valuable to the [b]league[b]. I know "valuable" is a very subjective term, but league is not. The award is for the league's most valuable/outstanding/excellent player, right?
The reason I bring this up is because every year there seems to be debate about how a team would or wouldn't do with/without a certain player. Peyton Manning may be one of the most valuable players in the NFL, but he's not this year. Why? Because he didn't play.
The Most Valuable Player is about the most valuable player to the league (i.e. - who performed the best). It's not some imaginary process of trying to figure out what a team would be without someone.
Am I wrong?
