He's been "regular" IR'ed. Meaning if someone comes with a magic wand and instantly heals his leg, you still won't see him until 2013.

The Packers still have the option to use it on someone else. Hopefully they never need to.
My guess is either Merling or Wilson. If I had to pick, it'd be Merling because he is not a TT pick. I don't know how others feel, but to me CJ has been a stiff for a couple of years now; gets blown out defending the run and has no pash rush.

Considering how they probably have their numbers *** (really? I typed p e r, thats offensive?) roster spot set, Neal coming back means a DL gets cut.

By the way, I do agree on Jones, but... I haven't watched what he does on STs these days, which is the only place he pretty much gets to play.

Neal looked really good in the preseason, even against 1st teamers. I hope it continues. I have a feeling these yung'uns around have kicked up the competition on the DL.
Don't see them cutting the "starting" DE Wilson.

Brad Jones, I'd be fine with.

And the only reason I'd like to see more of Merling is because, well, I'd like to see more of him before deciding whether or not he's a role player.
Merling's got that big body that you can't teach. It's just a matter of motivation with him and from the little bit I've seen I think he's finally getting it, wants it, realizes it's time to capitalize. Backup beef with potential to play more - doubt he's going anywhere.
Good call, sschumer.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Zombo IR'd for this year, dependant on injuries at his position.
The same may hold true with Sherrod and Quarless. I think we perceive their need to return greater, but they are trying to come back from more serious injuries than Zombo.

Who would want to pick him up?
Merling will be the one who goes. Amongst all of the DL the team carries, he's clearly at the bottom. Wilson isn't very bulky and Jones is limited athletically, but both players are high effort guys that Ted drafted. They are the guys who hold on, not the retreads from another team.

Big guys aren't hard to find, his problem is just that he, lime most of them is not very good (at this point at least). It's possible that he could stay over Jones, but there's no way they dump Wilson to keep him at this point.
I must be watching a different guy from you. Merling looks like he's playing well from what I've seen.

FYI, when TT traded down with the Jets, the Bill Parcells led Dolphins drafted Merling before TT's pick of Jordy Nelson. I'm fairly certain TT had Merling on his radar at that point so even though Merling isn't a "TT pick" he probably isn't very far off. Merling is a much better player than 7th round draft choice Bad Jones. Keep the best 53. This ain't Sherman's Packers anymore where we keep 2 punters & let Hunter Hillenmeyer go to the Bears.
Yes I know Wilson is a starter. It just appears that his ceiling is lower than any of the other d linemen and I would expect to see Worthy and Neal taking most of the snaps there as the season goes on. I forgot about Richardson as well.
There's another reason for keeping Merling. As much as I am personally a Mike Neal backer, the fact is that he's been either injured or ineffective save for three games in 2010. Let Merling go too early and we've got an issue should Glass Mike reappear.
I think we sometimes forget what a 34 lineman is supposed to do. They control gaps and set edges. If we're looking for big numbers for our defensive lineman we're going to be sorely disappointed. Prior to today's games, GB's defense is the 3rd ranked group in the league. Raji, Pickett, Wilson, Merling, Worthy and Daniels are doing a pretty damn good job so far. I wouldn't change that up. If anything, I think you add Neal to the rotation and see what he brings.
Thoughtful, accurate, timely...you may have touched all the bases, Pakrz.
Excellent point about their roles, although Raji over-exceeded expectations a couple of years ago, and it's easy to expect the same--or better--numbers from him.
Jenkins was another player who over-exceeded, IMO. We don't normally expect pass rush from a DE or even a DT in a 3-4 scheme, but he was a good rusher.

In any case, our DL need to improve against the rush, obviously. It looks to me like containment is lost by the DE's too often; I don't know if Neal can help with this, but he surely would be welcomed into the rotation.
