Source: Sanchez deal has $20.5 million in real guarantees
Posted by Mike Florio on March 10, 2012, 8:42 AM EST

AP resisted repeating any of the various reports that emerged last night regarding Mark Sanchez’s new contract because the word “guarantee” was being thrown around casually, like it was when Donovan McNabb got $40 million guaranteed from the Redskins in 2010 — and the truth was that he got only $3.5 million.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Sanchez will receive $20.5 million in fully guaranteed money over the next two seasons as part of his new contract, with no offsets.

It means that Sanchez will be the starting quarterback for at least two more seasons — unless the Jets are willing to pay him the same amount not to be.

The extension pays out $40.5 million total, pushing his total deal to five years and $58.25 million. And, for now, it puts Sanchez at No. 6 or No. 7 on the quarterback pay list.

LMAO. 21 mil for what? Dude is about as pedestrian a QB as they come.

Can only imagine what is thinking.

Good for Sanch?

I like Sanchez. I think he will evolve into a pretty solid QB. And he already has a couple AFC Championship appearances under his belt. If the Jets decided to not go after Manning, this was really the best choice for them, IMO. It's only two years guaranteed and their window (if there still is one) is now.
Sanchez has posted QB ratings of 63.0, 75.3, and 78.2 and has 55 TDs to 51 INTs in 3 years as a starting QB. There is nothing special about him and most would argue the Jets and their defense made it to the AFCC in spite of Sanchez and not because of him.

To throw a contract at him making him a top 6-7 QB in salary is ridiculous. Reason for my Rodgers comment is because when NFL teams do stupid contracts like this it only drives the price up for elite QBs like Rodgers.

I'd sooner throw this money at Flynn and his upside then Sanchez. You know what you have in this clown. Which a whole lot of nothing.
Lipstick and powder...

The fact, however, that Sanchez already was due to earn $17.75 million over the next two seasons has prompted one league source to characterize the move as a “lipstick and powder” deal.

For an extra $2.75 million, Sanchez gave the Jets three straight option years, allowing the team to keep him if he finally realizes his full potential — and to cut him without further investment after the 2013 season, the 2014 season, or the 2015 season.

The contract also could be called a glorified restructuring. Per a source with knowledge of the details, Sanchez’s $11.75 million base salary for 2012 has been converted to an $8 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $3.25 million, and a $500,000 workout bonus.

The move creates $6.4 million in 2012 cap space.

I see Dirty as a guy who....has the talent to become pretty good

Only thing he cares about is his image in NY, doesn't really care about playing football.

I've seen enough. Unless he truly applies himself as a leader & starts studying film like Peyton Manning, he'll be nothing more than he's already shown. An ok QB at times but not enough to win a title in this day & age of NFL.

Hence the "Lipstick & Powder" contract. Jets can get out at anytime & Sanchez wouldn't receive that type of deal from any team (Well....maybe the Redskins)
Shoulda thrown the money at Peyton and offered Sanchez the opportunity to be his personal waterboy. I think the Jets will have to make a change at QB sooner or later and this just prolongs the mess.

He played behind a solid oline and had weapons at receiver and was completely pedestrian.
@JeffDarlington

Final 11-on-11 stats for Tim Tebow past 3 weeks (per @SethWalderNYDN): 61-139 (43.9%), 2 TDs, 3 INTs, 3 rush TD #nyj

Tebow could've completed 10 of 139 for 0 TDs in camp. It doesn't matter. It will never matter. Everyone will forget if Sanchez struggles.
