What does X4 mean?

How TimesFour got its name.
Toward the end of 1999 my wife was contemplating starting her own education consulting business. She wanted to call it "Plus One". The idea of that name was that "Plus One" would go a step beyond what others would offer. To help her get ready, I tried to register www.plusone.com. Darn, already taken. How about plustwo.com? Also taken. I think I went through several plusses and all the way up to timesfour.com before I found an available domain that combined a sign of operation with a number.

The timesfour.com web site lay dormant for a couple of months. My wife accepted a new job and decided not to do the consulting gig. In the meantime I had decided to create a Packer web site. It made sense (to me anyway) to use the domain name that I had already registered and paid for: timesfour.com.

How TimesFour got started.
In the fall of 1999 (October I think), I stumbled across the old forum at the Journal-Sentinel Online (JSO). How cool! A place where Packer fans could get together online and talk about their obsession. Not only was there great football info and conversation, there were a variety of funny people and topics that made the site so much more than a "sports" hangout. I was hooked. At least for a while.

After the initial euphoria wore off, I realized that the JSO wasn't the ideal world I had first thought. Increasingly, the thoughtful and humorous messages were overwhelmed by obscene and abusive exchanges. More important, some of the best participants in the forum were abandoning ship (sparking the infamous and now de rigeur "I'm Leaving" threads).

After only a couple of months on the JSO, I decided to leave too. But within a few days, like many, I realized it wasn't so easy. The forum, and the people there, had become a small part of my life. I wasn't really ready to give that up, and I didn't appreciate the fact that inconsiderate "idots" could take that away from me. So rather than just "curse the darkness", I decided to light a candle and set up a similar site. How hard could it be?

Ha! Suffice to say that without a lot of help it would never have happened. But the biggest reason that TimesFour got off the ground was probably pure accident. On the exact night (2/1/00) that I launched TimesFour, the JSO converted its message board format from the UBB software that everyone was familiar with, to a crappy new format that nobody liked. A basic business lesson was reinforced: plan carefully, work hard, be lucky.
No, we don't have a hockey forum because we're waiting for it's t.v. ratings to pass MLS soccer....

...Which is essentially "zero"

Funny you say that, I've been around since 2000 and have posted about 8000 times more than I should have and I've never known the meaning.

Is that why we don't have that hockey forum yet? Wink

If a hockey game is played outdoors, ala Lambeau or Soldier Field, do those posts go in the outdoor forum? Confused

Seeing that you have been around since 2002, I must say that you didn't pay very good attention, as Scoop stated, more than a few times, how the name evolved

It is amazing that we are coming up on 10 years since the old JSO days.

Dang, I was almost 10 years younger then. Lots of changes. Some members have passed on, real and imaginary.

Others have married, divorced, had kids, had more kids. Lost loved ones. Auld Lang Syne. Alte Freundschaft.
Nein. The German for please send more chocolate is:

Senden Sie bitte mehr Schokolade.

Oh, yeah, before we went over on our trip, I learned the phrase...

"Wo ist die Schokolade?"

My first day over there, I forgot about the difference in time and thought how odd it was that hardly anyone was on x4. There was only that guy who ran the liquor store and me on at the time. Yeah, real die hard. Mr. QO and I arrived at the nephew's apartment in Mons..."Where's your computer?" and then, "Oh, hi!" Wink

Give him/us a break. It was probably in one of the those "OT" threads. Wink
