Still two games left, but the improvement in the D this year from 2011 is impressive.

Top 10 in points allowed / points per game. (9th)
Top 15 in total defense.
Top 4 in QB completion % against (55% this year)
Top 15 in rushing yards / yds per game (14th)
Top 10 in sacks (5th)

A huge improvement in just about every key category. All without Bishop and Perry, Smith, Woodson, and Matthews missing for extended periods. rookies on the DL, rookies in the secondary, and a couple UDFA's filling in when needed. Facing the best RB in football twice (AP) and the leading WR in football twice (Calvin Johnson). If anyone can find some stats on tackling I think that would be interesting to see.

Dom and his coaches were told last year wouldn't cut it and to get things straightened out.

Last year the Pats were mentioned as one of the "worst defenses in history". This year the Pats are ranked 28th in total defense.

Without Woodson in 2009 or 2010, those defenses would have had no chance. Yes it's in part because Woodson has declined some but it's been very cool to see youngsters like hayward, mcmillin, jennings perform well this season when he's not been on the field. Especially Casey. That kid's legit.

Capers could use better ILB's and CMIII still has no pass rushing help. Maybe that's Perry and the return of Bishop in 2013. But there are plenty of bright lights (and young ones at that) on this defense.

Capers has done a very good job no doubt but it also helps having quality talent on D. TT should have this D stacked even more next season.
Ding, ding ding. Why do we play more man-man, because we have a better pass rush. There was no way they could play man last year because the backs would have to cover for 10-15 seconds due to the lack of pass rush. The Packer covers are IMO exceptional at man and sub-par at zone, so allowing them to play man should show tons of improvement.

I think they'll handle Johnson just fine. Other than his 94 yard TD run what did he do last night? 20 carries for 28 yards. The Jets ILB Bart Scott completely missed the read and there was a huge hole for Johnson to run through, once he got to the 2nd level there was only a safety to beat. Hawk gets a lot of heat for tackling down field, but he rarely gets caught out of his assignment.
Kudos to Capers! (sounds like a breakfast cereal) The improved pass rush is a key, but so are the improved DBs. The DBs don't have to hold a guy so long while the line never gets there, and the line doesn't have to get to the QB in 1.5 seconds or he'll complete the pass. Last year with no rush they had time to pick apart the DBs, but there were also many times the QB was able to step back and immediately fire to a wide open guy. Sometimes it's a chicken-and-egg thing. Big Grin
I think the huge difference is what has been noted.

We can now play man-to-man.

We now have a pass rush beyond Clay.

Think about this, for all the fussers, we are 5th in the league in sacks, and Clay missed 4(5) games. Thats 1/4 of the season.

It all goes back to the draft(s) and what pieces are available. The pool of chance has born some fruit. It is pleasing. I have faith it can do even better as the air gets colder.
