Barclay impresses McCarthy

by Jason Wilde Aug 10, 2013 -- 8:50pm

The second-year tackle, who has worked at right tackle, center and right guard in camp but is now focusing on right tackle following Bryan Bulaga’s season-ending knee injury, went in second at right tackle behind Marshall Newhouse and may have pushed himself into a dead heat after his performance in the Packers’ 17-0 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field.

“I thought Barclay was clearly one of the top performers of the game for us,” McCarthy said after breaking down film of the game.

“When we went through the grading, we didn’t grade out very well as a football team; we graded out poorly as an offense. (But) I thought Don Barclay’s performance was clearly one of the better spots in (Friday) night’s game.”

Earlier in camp, Bakhtiari thrust himself into the right tackle competition while Barclay was playing multiple positions. He was struggling at center when Bulaga’s injury happened, and with Bakhtiari getting the call at left tackle, the coaches want Barclay to focus on tackle. That way, whoever doesn’t win the battle could serve as the swing tackle behind Bakhtiari and the right-side starter.

Asked what Barclay showed him on Friday night, McCarthy replied:

“Just his flexibility. He plays the right way. He’s assignment sound, did an excellent job finishing, he won the majority of his blocks and his pass sets.” continue

Not a big fan of Newhouse's inconsistencies, but he's not bad at all as a backup swing tackle.  Hopefully we don't have to see him this season.  Barclay gives so much more in the run game I'd be surprised if he doesn't win the job.  There have been other articles noting Barclay came to camp with a lot more strength from his work in the weight room this off season.

Don Barclay is making strong push to start at right tackle

by Bob McGinn on Saturday, August 10th, 2013

The Green Bay Packers would be doing a disservice to themselves as well as Don Barclay if they don't give the forgotten man of training camp every opportunity to win the starting berth at right tackle.

In all, Barclay played 30 snaps, all at right tackle, while Newhouse played 44, including 26 on the right side.

By subjective judgment, Barclay had 1½ minus plays not counting a fourth-and-1 penalty for a false start in which the blame could have been spread among three or four players.

Newhouse had seven minuses, including five at right tackle and two at left tackle.

It wasn't that Newhouse was particularly ineffective. He was adequate, as he has been much of the time as a 31-game starter over the last two seasons.

It also wasn't a case where Barclay performed exceptionally well. He was almost never exceptional a year ago, either, when he started the final six games at right tackle.

Barclay demonstrated anew that he just kind of knows how to play. continue

Lots more past the click.  Bob McGinn breaks down each man's game against the Cardinals.  Worth the time.

Barclay strong at right tackle for Packers in preseason opener

by Mike Vandermause on Saturday, August 10th, 2013

On Thursday, when it was suggested Barclays role would be as a reserve this season, Packers offensive line coach James Campen set the record straight.

“No, I disagree with that,” Campen said. “(Barclays) in competition for a starting spot. In my mindset and the way I’ve always coached, that starting point is not set until we go to San Francisco (for the season opener).

They’re in competition for a starting spot. I’ve seen guys come on late. I’ve seen guys perform well in the preseason. To me, hey, that’s where he’s at.”

...

Barclay said there have been some benefits to playing different positions, particularly center.

“It helps me understand the whole offense a lot better than just saying I’ve got to focus on right tackle and just learn that,” Barclay said.

“It opens up your mind to look and see different blitzes coming from a center standpoint, just viewing the whole field.” continue

Past the click Mike Vandermause has more from Barclay, more from MM, and Josh Sitton's take on Barclay's play.

I re-watched the game, watched the OT's only...Bakhtiari is going to be solid...amazing for a 4th round rookie...hell we've invested higher picks in OL that are not with the team or haven't taken many snaps.

Newhouse looked god-awful at RT...he actually looked better at LT...but he was no great shakes. Barclay was the best OT after Bakhtiari...but that's not saying much. To me, Barclay is the best option, and so they are forced to go with him. They need to fish or cut bait the Datko and Sherrod...there is absolutely zero depth at OT on this team right now.

Lock it in for consistency for the oline.  Barclay and Babaganoush.

Newhouse will have to keep developing as a backup.  All the skills, none of the fire apparently.  Datko is a freaking waste of a roster spot.  They would be better off dropping his ass and getting a scrub or old vet in there to see if they can bolster the interior.

Clifton, Tauscher gone

Bulaga, Sherrod injured

That's a lot of OTs to replace...

Bulaga is understandable.

They knew what an injured $hit heap Sherrod was last year at this time. They get no pass for guys like Datko. Cliffy and Tausch have been gone long enough they've had time to draft and replace them.

I would have thought that if Sherrod were coming back, he would have done it by now.  It has been about a year and a year and 3/4ths and still can't come back.  I thought he was a good pick when they took him.  Tretter also played OT, and maybe could have figured into the mix somehow if he were not injured.  Thankfully, TT drafted two tackles.
