Erik Walden Takes Turn In Spotlight

“He showed up big,” linebacker Desmond Bishop said. “He had a phenomenal game. When guys step up like that and play big like that, it makes it easy for all of us. I appreciate him going out there and making plays.”

...two plays after helping defensive end Howard Green finish up a sack of Cutler, Walden came on a delayed blitz up the middle and buried Cutler for an 11-yard loss to force another punt.

“I was reading the center, and as soon as he looked away, there was a gap that came open and I just took it and made the play,” said Walden, who has put in a lot of extra time with position coach Kevin Greene since arriving in Green Bay.

“I’ve got a great coach. I have to give a lot of credit to ‘KG.’ He pulled me to the side, he kept it real. He told me, ‘If you can’t do this, you can’t play for me.’ So I took that to heart and I’m trying to get better every day to help my team.”

To keep this staff all it takes is $$$. Lets face it the Packers are going to be a SB threat for the forseeable future. Why leave for some dreck in a less desirable city except for money or a HC gig. QB coaches are more likely to move up than O-cordinators in my mind. Should be similar on D.

Greene stays as long as Dom stays. Greene loves the man. He still calls him "Coach Dom".

Spygate: In what could be a preview of next week, Capers used linebacker Erik Walden as a spy for Cutler.

When he went with a three-man rush, he had Walden play a middle linebacker position that allowed him to follow Cutler and make sure he didn't get very far scrambling. He put a pretty good lick on the Bears quarterback along the Packers sideline after he tried to run out of bounds.

"We ran that defense some with Erik, basically," Capers said. "Cutler's a good runner with the football and so we had a little plan where Erik had Cutler."
Walden is a testament to how can it pay dividends to make depth a priority as Thompson has. This team was constructed to withstand injuries and instability, and the coaches have a great sense for how to plug ordinary guys in and give them a simple job (in Walden's case, spend the afternoon spying on Cutler) while the playmakers do their thing.

Who does he replace? Camden? Slocum? Razzer

I was pleased to see a lot of Walden flying around on Sun.

I am quite sure ROTTT understands this and will continue to compensate them well.

Hope so, these defensive coaches have done an outstanding job. And you look at the growth of guys like Bishop and Raji and Williams...it's a priority that Ted keep this group together.
Greene is coaching a position he once played and doing a great job of it. Assuming being a DC is a long-term goal for him, I think it will be a couple more years before he's ready.

As for spying Vick, agreed with Satori that Bishop is not the man. Whoever it is needs to have some speed and quickness. I like what the Vikings did sending a DB on almost every play.

With the staff Capers has assembled, it's a tough choice....Greene, Whitt, Perry , Trgo, etc.....all excellent coaches.

Even Clements, Robinson, and McAdoo on the offensive side are guys that have impressed with how they've brought players along.

As I mentioned in the 11-1 thread, the defensive staff deserve raises.
Walden Is Hall Of Fame's Featured Player Of The Week

Green Bay Packers linebacker Erik Walden finished with a team-high 11 tackles and his first two career sacks en route to the team’s 10-3 win over the Chicago Bears, earning selection as the Packers Hall of Fame Featured Player of the Week. The exhibit contains memorabilia from the game, including a game ball autographed by Walden.

I thought Masthay should have been the guy this week.

When he graduated from our high school, I never envisioned any of what he has become. He walked on at Auburn and made himself into the player he became. And now into the coach he has become. He comes back every few years and spends time with the students. I hope he stays in GB forever. He has done a heck of a job.

Love Greene and want to keep him around a long time, but TT is even more important because he finds guys like Walden to give to Greene. With all the injuries, TT has signed a couple guys who were considered other teams' scraps (Walden, Green, for example; Shields as an undrafted FA) who have been major contributors for us. TT may not hit on all cylinders all the time (what has Nance done lately?) but overall, he's been excellent this year.
Lets throw Zombo, Bishop (getting his assignments straighten out), coaching up CJ Wilson and Wynn to make them respectable, Charlie Peprah (spell?) dumped by 2 other teams since last leaving GB - there have been a number of things happening here. I'm impressed.
